M1 have been retired (and scrapped) for a couple years now. The M3 are still around and have a few more years left in them.

In most stations there is not enough room under the platform to take refuge. Usually the third rail shoe will strike you. Also in some stations, the trough is not deep enough, or wide enough to completely get out of the way. Barriers would be more thing to break, or line up the sheep, I mean passengers to be pushed in.

Its about time. Congratulations to Commissioner Stiebeling.

IF the FDNY battalions are anything like the the NYPD RMPs, then it depends where it the city they are assigned. When I worked in Manhattan, we regularly had older RMPs with lower mileage due to the density of population in a smaller area. Our cars would go 5 to 6 years before replacement, depending on conditions. Where I am at now it the Bronx we rack up the miles pretty quick. Our newest van put 41,000 in its first year with us, and now as it is approaching its second year is around 79,000 miles. I have been there for 2 and half years, we have gotten 1 new van and 2 new cars in that time period. From what I have heard, that is normal. Overall the conditions of the cars at those mileages are the same, tired, prone to breakdowns, doors and windows leak, need greater maintenance, etc, the only difference is age. Yonkers has 2 to cover the city. They probably run nonstop. As was mentioned, what condition are the spares in, if there are any? NYPD spare RMPs are a crap shoot.

The union has one concern, take care of its own members. I do not see it as an attack on Empress per se, but lets face it, if another ambulance company were to offer the same service at less cost to the City of Yonkers, Empress would be gone. The city bean counters have no loyalty, just cold hard cash calculations. I see as more against the city. Lets face it, if the City could save money on EMS, do you really think it will go to YFD? I would almost guarantee that it would be spent elsewhere.
