  1. Not at first, there isn't much of a smell!!! It happens at least once or twice a year on the NYCTA subway system. usually an older person will pass away, and ride the train for several hours until someone, usually a cleaner or conductor, does notice.
  2. The remains of Floyd were bad enough with all the flooding, trees down, etc. Hope everything stays far away.
  3. Sure, this board does have a younger membership, and sometimes it shows, usually in threads about what blue lights do you have in your POV, and 'dream depts/apparatus'. Was I like that when I first joined the fire service...of course, sometimes I will check the members info, to be surprised that the person is actually older than me. But with age/experience I calmed down a little, just a little. As someone who took Essentials, a 39 hour course way back in 1989, I find it refreshing to listen to the 20 year old who just took FF1, and is looking foward to the next class. The older member can often often learn from the younger member, and vice versa..it is a two way street. The younger members may look at a problem and see a different solution than an older member who has always done it the way it was taught years ago. New/younger membership can often bring new ideas/solutions, so don't be so quick to judge them just because they are new.
  4. No change in laws for FD/EMS as I read what has been posted on this site. However, in the real world, you may get more people who will yield to you responding to a call, in the mistaken belief you are in an unmarked police car.
  5. Good luck with the new apparatus. Hope they work as well as the apparatus they replace.
  6. Maybe, give it a shot and if it is a distraction from the original intent of EMTBravo, then it can be deleted. Maybe make it a sub-section of the lounge, like when 'Street Eats' first started.
  7. it was designed to be ADA compliant and reduce maintenance costs. Yes the doors are wider, and allow for more people to enter/exit quickly. Also the emergency release handles are now right next to the door, and clearly marked behind a break away plastic door(both inside and outside)
  8. Or worse yet, riding on the turntable, with your feet dangling into the jumpseat area(midmount ladder).
  9. I know of one dept that removed the plate and kept riding the tailboard until the early ninties. When I first joined it was still allowed, but is now banned. There really is no reason to ride back there, it is just too unsafe. Just as bad, if not worse was riding on top of the apparatus. Not in the hose, but on benches, such as the old R47. You had to watch for low branches, bumps in the road(I almost got bounced off one time), plus the apparatus making hard turns/stops. Ride in the cab with your seatbelt on.
  10. Not sure if this helps, but I found one photo over at Firepics.net it is the second photo on the page. Also some nice shots of other Mack-C in Westchester..Chapppaqua, Larchmont, and Croton's rescue come to mind.
  11. Dadbo46, Any further information on these new hybrids such as the type of hybrid, diesel-electric, diesel-cng,etc? Just wondering if there is anything special for first responders county-wide. Only 4 buses, but from the sound of it, they could be anywhere in the county.
  12. Guilty as charged yes i am a railfan. I have about 80 or so photos that I have posted on http://naphotos.nerail.org/ , mostly under Metro North, or by contibutor, Kurt Von Dietsch. Get your shots of the FL-9/F10 when you get the chance, as they are no longer in scheduled passenger service. They do, however pop up from time to time as replacements. Some other train websites are: http://www.thejoekorner.com/indexfrm.html and http://piercehaviland.com/rail/index.htm The pierce haviland site does not get upgraded to often.
  13. After the Soviet Union collapsed, a lot of military equipment was sold through out the world. China may have been hurting for cash, and sold off some outdated equipment.
  14. Best bet is contact 212-RECRUIT. theu will give all the info you need. Written test is usually 100 multiple choice questions. Usually the first 15 to 20 questions are a memory test from a picture supplied during the test. Rest of test is reading comprehension, general knowledge. The physical test is an obstacle course, with a trigger pull test. NYPD uses 12 pound trigger pull, very heavy. Must pull trigger 16 times with gun through small cut out, about 5"x5", without touching sides. If you are considering it I suggest lots of running, for endurance. Also try the city website: Nyc.gov/nypd . There is a link on the left side for test information. Hope this helps.
  15. Overlook Drive In has a similar system. Once you leave the drive in and get out on the road, you lose the signal. I went there, a few times last year, and the one in Lake George once. It is a good time, and young kids will like it since they can run around before the movie starts.
  16. Definitley going to extend response times for members. I think if you get any alarms at rush hour, it will also slow the apparatus. That is due to the heavy amount of traffic, and they will have no where to go, for an a piece of apparatus to get by. Not so much Manville Rd, But Bedford Rd from Memorial Plaza to the 7-11. On another note,How will this added pavement affect the already low bridges at Bedford Rd and Manville Rd? 2371, will Pleasantville/Thornwood apparatus still fit underneath these bridges once the roadway is raised, given the higher travel height of the new R47/E91? Good luck, hopefully the week will have nice weather and a low number of alarms.
  17. This car, or one like it has been in New York, for the Columbus Day Parade in 2004, and I think 2005 as well. Check this link: Columbus Day 2004 click here The pgotos are about 3/4s of the way down the page. Ususally the The Columbia Society invites old police cars as you will see in the photos. The red RMP stenciled 53 Pct is from 'Car 54, where are you?'
  18. Maybe talk to mutual depts. Have them respond as needed, but for alarms that Mt Vernon could have covered by itself(if everything is working/fully staffed) then have those fepts. submit bills to the city of Mt Venon for fuel , and manpower. Granted if M/A is needed, i.e multiple alarms, then no bill. Get the parent union involved see if they have better luck with the media.
  19. Would any of the conditions in FDMV qualify for NYS PESH (OSHA) to step in and investigate? Things such as the tower ladder with no escape ladder? I agree with exmrvfc that the union needs to plan for the long term. The media might be the best way at this point to shame the politicians in acting. Look at the Library roof a few years ago.. .tons of media attention(Journal News And News12) until repairs were started. FDMV needs to do the same for its problems. No matter what, something needs to be done, and the union should not rest until problems are solved. Make the noise, what is Mayor Davis and City Hall going to do, abolish FDMV. I think not.
  20. Unfortunatley , I think the union has voiced it complaints to deaf ears at City Hall. If I remember correctly, didn't the Yonkers Union, ( I think when Pagano was its head) bring this problem up, that Yonkers spent more time in Mt Vernon. It was brought up several times in the Journal News ( Distorted Dispatch at the time) in an attempt to get Mt Vernon to improve itself. After a while the pressure died off as Mt Vernon made some improvement I dont think quitting would improve the situation at all, it would just put more pressure on the surrounding depts. It seems that money is a big part of the issue. Sure Mt Vernon just purchased 3 new pieces of apparatus, but if there are no spares availible, you leave no room for preventive maintenanace, accidents, mechanical failure. What happened to the apparatus that was replaced? Was it sold/traded in, or was any kept in reserve. From what has been brought up, one piece of apparatus ( the Tower Ladder) was/ or is out of service for almost 8 months, because of an arguement over who was going to pay to fix it, Mt Vernon or the manufacturer. That is ridiculess, just fix it and settle the bills later, in court if necessary. Sure everyone has 'limited assets, but why should Yonkers and New Rochelle citizens have to pay for essential services in Mt Vernon. Yes, mutual aid is called and given by almost every dept in the nation, with few exceptions. From what has been described on this board, it appears ( and maybe I am wrong on this) that Mt Vernon (city hall not FDMV) has the belief that its neighbors will cover Mt Vernon shortcomings. As for solutions, maybe Mt Vernon's union could start and aggressive campaign in the press including tv coverage. Get the other depts involved such as Yonkers, and New Rochelle to let the taxpayers know what they are not getting in return for thier tax dollars. Do you think that Mt Vernon's residents know they are covered by 2 engines and 1 ambulance, and would they be happy about that situation. I doubt they know about it, but they certainly would care about it if they knew. Let them and the Media pressure the mayor's office about equipment and staffing issues. The Union should be able to document the amount of equipment out of service( and length of time until fixed), mutual aid called, and any unfilled positions in the dept(and how long those spots have been unfilled) Bring up NFPA standards as a guide for what the city should provide, and any OSHA standards that apply. Why should firefighters at FDMV be put in jeopardy because City Hall refuses to acknowledge a problem, or take soom course of action. Hopefully the Mayor will respond to save his job, or be voted out by the public in the next election.
  21. Let me start by saying my EMT expired back in 1997, and at that time we were just starting to get ALS fly cars. Before that it was stabilize, scoop and run. For the scenario, I think I would wait. During that 5 minute eta, I would reassess/ retake vitals, switch over to onboard O2, etc. If need be I would instruct to driver to start responding to the hospital slowly, allowing the medic to catch up.
  22. Yes, NYS has 'graduated drivers license for those under 18, here is the link to the DMy website: NYS DMV
  23. 10- codes are big in NYC, both PD and FD. Given the amount of radio traffic that goes out, it saves time. That and it is very rare that mutual is requested/needed. Both agencies are big enough toshift personnel/equipment as needed. Also helps dispatchers enter the info into the dispatching system.
  24. It gets more press lately, buut I think it has more to do with todays cars being better insulated against noise. With the windows up, radio on, and the heater/AC on, I can barely hear a siren until it is right on top of me. Add in cell phones, in car entertainment systems, and navigation systems, todays drivers have more distractions with will prevent them from hearing anything. Then when they do hear/see the emergency vehicle, they panick...stop suddenly and sometimes swerve to the side. It think this might be cause of any increase in accidents.
