  1. Not the new larger spring-loaded folding chocks, but I have seen apparatus drive over some the smaller one piece chocks.
  2. RIP brother, and may the others have a quick and complete recovery
  3. Here is the link to their website: http://www.engine260.com/

  6. yeah, If I remember correctly, it is 95'. I heard a rumor that this is Mt Kisco's old tower ladder. Can anyone confirm this?
  7. Here is a slightly better photo of the current New Canaan Ladder 3: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b50/grum...0064_edited.jpg
  8. Here is a picture of the 1941 Mack I took in Mt Kisco this year. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b50/grum...de/P7140047.jpg
  9. Thats real nice, having a nice shiny piece of apparatus, but does it work? I know in my old dept, one company was so into winning the Inspection trophy, that half the equipment on their apparatus looked great, but physically did not work. Yeah the crosslays looked great, but if you needed to pull it, it was impossible. Same for other equipment such as gated wye/valves/ etc all painted real nice, but half the coupling no longer spun due to paint sticking thing up, missing bearings etc. So by your thought , this company that won the trophy for 5 years straight should have been the best at firefighting..but alot of the times we would go alarms shaking our heads at some of the nonsense that occurred. Things like only 100' of 2 1/2 hose connected to a gate wye. The company inquestion would stretch this line, then attach an appartment pack to it. Their justification was that they could then stretch 2 lines if needed. They would never touch the 300' crosslay. This nonsense was even pulled at an oil burner malfunction, that was in an enclosed shed on the side of a building where the apparatus in question was less than 100' away. Once they even 'conveinently' did not have a driver for an alarm that occurred several days before our Inspection, but two(2) of their drivers managed to respond to the scene in their personal vehicles. My company on the other hand set up our apparatus to work. It may have looked like sh!T, and been dirty, but when push came to shove, it got the job done effectively. Tools were accesible, and hosee lines were easy to stretch. FDNY/LAFD did not get their reputations as progressive fire departments by winning trophies marching in parades. If you want to march in parades that is fine, but this is the fire service, and that is what comes first. The Fire Service...training and safety are most important, not parades and trophies. I would rather have pride in having a well trained department that can safely and effectively deal with any problem thrown at us, than be part of a department that places more value on shiny trucks, and marching in a straight line down the road. I don't mind parades, it is a good way to relax, and make some friends, but I'm sure that if God forbid something bad happens, i.e. a Line Of Duty Death, the first thing the insurance companies and OSHA/PESH are not going to look at are your parade trophies. Grow Up or Get Out!
  10. That sounds possible. One news release stated the Intrepid would go to Bayoone for 6 months+ of drydock to fix her hull, and from there go to Staten Island for internal renovation/exhibit maintenance. I think they were working on the approvals for the dredging since she has been there since what, 1982? I think the 18 month timeline is optimistic, and will be longer.
  11. There are some more photos, both before and after of this unit on Firepics.net. Drive safely, and wear your seatbelts. Remember, according to the article, the Engine was only traveling at about 25 mph. Here is the link: http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/index.php?showtopic=720
  12. Another possibility is that an off-duty MOS got involved in something that required a notification to Operations. It may have been the Duty Captain responding to investigate.
  13. Best wishes for speedy recovery. Just a reminder to always be aware what is going on around you...because someone else is probably not paying attention. How can you miss a truck the size of Rescue 1?
  14. Ah that old argument. Perhaps we should also give up bunker pants, SCBA, thermal imaging cameras, enclosed cabs with both AC and heat, and allow alcohol back on the rigs, as this was all done 'Back in the Day'. Just because no one from your dept has died or been injured from riding all over the apparatus, doesn't mean it can't happen, only that your dept has been lucky. I'm sure that trophy will have great meaning to your dept after it has to hose done a street to remove blood and brain matter should a member fall off the apparatus and crack their head open. Until you can grow up, stay in the firehouse polishing your trophy, and stay off the big shiny fire truck, you're going to hurt yourself.
  15. In case anyone missed the press releases, The Intrepid will Close on Oct 1, 2006 for much needed repairs, and renovations expected to last for 2 years. Here is the link to the Intrepid : http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/intrepidmuse.../item.php?id=43 Firefighter Appreciation Weekend is next week July 15 and 16, featuring demonstrations by the FDNY. Police Appreciation Weekend is August 19 and 20, featuring displays by various units of the NYPD. The last time I went to the Intrepid was about 4 years ago, and it was a great experience. I enjoyed the fact that there were former crewmembers that served aboard her working as guides. I had the opportunity to speak with one gentleman who served aboard from 1943 to 1945. If you get the chance to go, talk to the guides to get an idea of what they went thru to defend this country, and say 'Thank You' for all they have done. I read an article in the NY Post ( that or the Daily News, not sure which) that mentioned that after the two year renovation is complete, that some of the guides will no longer be around, as some are in their 80's.
  16. If 911 is called, NYPD will dispatch a unit. When that unit arrives and finds a stuck occupied elevator, it is supposed to request ESU via their dispatcher. Not sure who calls FD or NYC Housing Authority Emergency Services.
  17. I work with two of John-Paul Rodrigues' cousins, and both say the family is still having a hard time with the loss, even now. We often see sanitation workers in the city (private carting companies) doing the same thing, and my co workers are amazed that this nonsense continues. It is too easy to slip and fall or be bounced off the apparatus, let alone get rear ended by another driver who is distracted, or doesn't see the truck stop quickly. I rode the 'back step' a few times, and I was never comfortable doing it. Like Res6cue stated "It wasn't just some meaningless NFPA, OSHA or insurance company decision, it was based on case histories" These decisions were based on blood spilled by our brothers/fathers...Dont make the same mistakes..learn from what happened.
  18. Nice looking truck, I was surprised to see it in Lake George. Unfortunately I missed the parade, it was it Queensbury, but I found out too late. Here are two quick photos I was able to get before it was taken away from the Convention site:
  19. Doesn't Pound Ridge Fire Dept. own 2 houses that are subdivided into apartments, rented to memebers?
  20. At the NYS level, there are NO exemptions, even police officers, and yes judges may be called for jury duty. You can defer, I think, for up to six months. That does not mean you will be picked to serve on a jury. As for the Federal level, yes, I believe that volunteers are still exempt(not totally sure though, Its been a while since I got one of those)
  21. Yes, Eng 201 and 203 from Broad Channel VFD, were both 1980 ALFs. I believe they were recently sold (for about $5000 a piece). Here is the link to their website: http://www.broadchannelvfd.org/ Look under pictures, use the scroll down box top, center to go to current apparatus.
  22. Congrats Seth! Will water be allowed at the reception?
  23. 10. from what I've heard all went to Highway.
  24. Congrats to you and your fiance
