At this point with public opposition to the new house, letting it fall down may be the best thing. I would love to see the public's reaction when they have to replace the firehouse, but also repair/replace most of the apparatus housed there as well.

Task forces cover several precincts with additonal manpower. Manhattan South Task Force covers all pcts in the lower half of Manhattan. Brooklyn and Queens are also split North and South. Staten Island and the Bronx have one task force each. Transit also has 1 task force for each boro , except Staten Island. In the precincts, Task Force provides addtional manpower for patrol, radom checkpoints, etc. They are often deployed where there is crime patterns or large crowds, i.e Time Square on a Friday/Saturday night. They also are the first to respond to mobilizations.. serious crimes that have just occurred robbery/assault/burglary/missing persons. In transit, the task forces provide coverage on the trains late at night (uniformed train patrol). During the daytime more plainclothes coverage for pickpockets/ quality of life crimes. Transit task forces are also deployed based on crime patterns, but do not respond until the last level (Level 4 ) mobilizations, do to the fact they are spread out over the entire boro, and would have to respond by train.

Andy, Thanks for posting this here. I took the wife and kids, and they had a great time. My kids were impressed by all the different apparatus, especially older stuff they used to see on the streets, such as ex-Pleasantville E-91, ex-Thornwood E-88. I for one would have been willing to pay a small admission fee, it was worth it. Too bad more teams did not show up for the muster games (I joined in with Mahopac, and was in the second group for the bucket brigade...dumped the first bucket on myself). Ex-Thornwood 1976 Mack CF provides the water source for the muster games..

NjMedic.. that is the Vector. Older bars had halogen lightbulbs. New ones look the same, but with LED's inside the pods. Here is a link to Federal Signal's page : http://www.fedsig.com/industry_solutions/l...ghts_Sirens.pdf

I always preferred the 5" on the officer's side...It is away from the pump operator, god forbid it ever lets loose. Also one less thing to trip over.

Bellevue is closest to GCT (located E33st/1 Ave) Train crew most likely called ahead to the dispatcher who notified EMS, and directed train to GCT in order to meet . No guarantee that bus would be at 125 st. Also holding the train at 125St/Harlem would disrupt the rest of the trains up and down the lines.

It happens.. It almost happened to me in Pleasantville a few years ago in the old Rescue 47. I had the green light at the intersection, and was turning to the right. PD Thought he was faster/or thought he had the right of way and went throught the red light, responding to the same incident. I stomped on the brakes so hard the Capt ended up on the dashboard. Never assume another emergency vehicle sees/ hears you, and will stop. I always respond with the drivers window open a hair to hear other emergency vehicles sirens. PS I let the captain handle that one up the chain of command.

Here is their newest helicopter, stationed at WMC in Valhalla. Took the photo last month at my wife's EMT class.

Yes, ALWAYS CHOCK THE WHEELS!!! But also be aware that the chocks may not hold the apparatus in place, especially the older smaller chocks that are still out there.

Yes, the spot is on the roof. Actually make that two spots on the roof marked like this. There are close to the middle of the car(length-wise), and are off set so that one is on the 'left side', and the other on the 'right side' of the car. The areas marked are about 10 to 15 feet apart.

All law enforcement agencies in the area get a free pass on Metro North, and LIRR. This was done after the Colin Ferguson shooting on LIRR on Dec. 7, 1993. Prior to this LIRR resisted giving free pass I have been told. NYPD also gets free access to Subways, FDNY gets free subways only when on duty with turnout gear (i.e reassigned to another station).

I was recently out in Indiana, and along the sides of I-80 I noticed these signs. It appears to use radar and/or laser to detect animals such as deer along the side of the road, and alert drivers with the flashing amber light. There were addtional poles every couple of hundred yards with just the detetction equipment seen in the bottom of the photo. The speed limit along this section of road is 70 mph, and any collision with a large animal will cause extensive damage. Would a similar system be worth it on roads in our area such as I-684/84 etc?

Some may go to precincts also as replacements for the Ford Explorers. Most of the Explorers are several years old, and many are considered pieces of junk. Lots of electrical problems. Also, most Highway units get additional rear warning devices, and the back of the roof of this Tahoe pictured looks pretty bare, but could be awaiting the shops to do the install.
-
The terrain was mostly flat, with some gentle rolling hills. In most areas, the roadway was slightly higher (about five feet) than the surrounding areas. Each pole of the system had a solar panel on top.
