  1. Rest in peace Brother. I was working last night when this occurred, and ended up near by at 0300. Terrible scene, we were wondering why the local Precinct called for a Level 1 mobilization until I read the paper this morning.
  2. Didnt know ESU had them. Too busy marking hydrant locations with the RMP. Probably like flash bangs, they need to get permission from Chief of Department or higher. By then its over
  3. Do any departments around here even use spike strips to begin with?
  4. Aside from the powercall siren in the beginning, a pretty good video. Looks the 2 crosslays were used for the #2 exposure, and the rear of the building, possibly (blue line). Very good to see that it looked like no one was operating inside the structure with the master stream flowing( no hose into the front door).
  5. Haven't heard of too many Sutphen remounts. good luck with it.
  6. Some of the battery cables on cars like BMW, Mercedes , etc cost into the hundreds of dollars. Disconnect them using a wrench/socket when ever possible. That way if you need to reconnect the power to lower a window into the door, move a seat, open a trunk (came across a Mercury with a trunk that only had a power release) you can do it. If the car is crushed to the point that cutting the battery is the only option, then you have no choice. If the car is not going to be towed away, leave the battery connected.
  7. You can ask, but the owner of the phone has no legal obligation to give them to you. I was involved with an arrest at work, where we had reason to believe a cellphone of one perp held evidence (photos). Since the person was already under arrest we vouchered the phone for investigatory purposes, and convinced an Assistant District Attorney to apply for a search warrant. The ADA agreed, and a search warrant was obtained. That is the only way you can get evidence like that. Any good defense attorney will fight any evidence (photos/video from a cell phone, etc.) obtained in any questionable manor to be excluded from a trial if an arrest is made. Defense attorneys do this all the time, even with evidence where there is no question it was involved and how it was recovered. You can not just take something from someone, there has to be a reason. For example at work, if we stop someone with a PBA card, we have been told that we, as a representative of the PBA may not confiscate these cards any more. It opens us up to complaints of larceny, even though the cards are marked by the PBA that they may be taken at any time.
  8. Work in emergency services long enough and you will hear this repeatedly. The public always thinks they know better. Here is a clip from Southland:

  13. Rest in Peace.
  14. Its in the NY Post today. Absolutely disgusting. Hopefully the federal judge will now open his eyes to the motives of the Vulcan Society, but I doubt it.
  15. Great find! Glad to see things haven't changed that much, transit wants to move the trains at any cost, and fireman back then didn't pull up their boots LOL
  16. I would have to agree with OoO. I joined the FD at 16, and the VAC at 17. I think that what is expected, and what may be encountered needs to be discussed with prospective junior members, and their parent/guardian. Let both know that EMS members have the possibility of seeing blood, dead human bodies, broken bones, performing CPR and other things not normally seen. Also let them know there is no shame/embarrassment if they think they can not handle the sight of such things. After approval for membership the EMT in charge has the final say. If you see the junior member is having a hard time with something on a call, put them in the front of the bus, in the fly car, or get PD to take them back to the station if possible. My current department is having this discussion now, as we have two CFR's under the age of 18 who want to ride the ambulance, but current policy says no. The EMS LT is against it, "as they may see something they shouldn't", and it gets more personal than the FD side of operations. I can see her point, but I have worked at many extrication jobs as junior FD member having to bring cribbing, tools, etc up to the car and seeing patients in the vehicles. It can be plenty personal setting up cribbing while hearing a patient pinned in a car asking about the passenger next to them, who is now deceased. I have also seen plenty of "adult" members freeze on calls at things they have seen while junior members still function. Even on my job as a police officer, some cops can't handle seeing blood, and other nasty injuries the human body can sustain when involved in a car accident, hit by a train, stabbing, etc. To others, like myself, can handle a man under (person run over by a train) and then go out to breakfast and get an egg and cheese on a roll with salt pepper and ketchup. There is a reason why militaries recruit younger members, they think they are invincible, and will do things without thinking it will effect them.
  17. The new radios will have precinct frequencies in them, so that we can switch over if need be. Current Vertex radios used in the precincts have the capability to monitor, but not transmit on Transit frequencies (precinct are UHF, Transit is VHF) My first two commands Transit Manhattan Task Force, and TD 1 issued radios to the officers. My current command, TD 12 does not have enough radios to individually issue them, so we must sign one out every tour. Since it is not your personal radio, no one takes care of them, and they are in poor condition. Antennas are often broken, threads stripped and knobs missing. Islander, after you left, sometime around 2006 the Transit CAD was replaced with the Sprint system used topside. That cut down on a lot of the delay in getting heavy jobs to both Transit and Precincts radios. Only problem now is we in Transit often get notified for jobs like robberies, assaults in progress, burglaries, etc that are no where close to any subway station. No more "Central can I get the CN" I always love when the dispatchers think there is a problem with the radio network. Often you hear central "Can any unit in the field advise how you read central" The replies can be hilarious, "like a book central", "left to right", "hooked on phonics central"
  18. Every NYC police officer has two numbers, their shield number and a tax number. The public sees your shield number, which can change by promotion, or a lost shield. Your tax number is always yours. It is used to identify officers in the dept. Computer systems, payroll, dept forms, etc. Your tax number is also used on the roll calls, which are entered into the computer so the dispatcher has the ability to see who is answering jobs, collaring, etc. With the new portables the dispatcher will be able to immediately see who is transmiting. As far as I know, right now there will be no change to the way the different agencies interact. FDNY portables do not work with Transit authority or PD Transit Bureau repeaters so they often use multiple members to re-broadcast a message from subway platform to the street. FDNY also has a system in some stations that allows units to plug into and communicate to the street via a hardwired phone system. Sadly yes, with the new radios, it will be hard for members to make unauthorized radio transmissions such portable check by the numbers(inspections is in the area), chewbacca noises, and other funny comments.
  19. We have been hearing the new Transit portable radios will be deployed within the next week or two. We are also being told that each radio will be personally assigned to an officer, with that officer's tax number coming up during a transmission as an identifier.

  21. Unfortunately I did not get any of the company patches, of the bronze plaque on Ladder 4 for their 9/11 members
  22. The Coast Guard arrived ahead of schedule so we missed the landing, however we did get to watch their departure. FDNY had standpipe packs and a Hurst tool on deck if needed. In the earlier photos if you look closely you can see them loading everything on to carts which they brought up to deck. Here they held a preflight briefing with everyone. Just after takeoff
