Rest in Peace Lenny. He was always great to be around. During our time in Pleasantville together, Lenny never fell for the politics, it was always about providing the best service to the public. Lenny was a great friend that will truly be missed. One incident that comes to mind I mentioned recently in the thread about Thruway response and possible tolls. We were returning from a parade in Bedford with the old R47. I was driving, when I got a long buzz to stop the truck. I stopped immediately and before I could get out of the cab Lenny had already hopped off and told me everything was OK. Unbeknownst to me Lennny grabbed a crosswalk sign and thrown it on top of the truck. We continued on our way. When I got back to Pleasantville's HQ, I let off the manpower to block traffic and spot me as I backed in. I swung the rig out into the street when one our chiefs drove up very quickly. It soon became apparent he was not in a good mood. He was pissed off that he had received a phone call from the Bedford PD, wanting the sign returned. I think the chief was more upset that his personal time with his wife had been interuppted!. When I asked the chief why they thought it had been us, the chief said "a police officer saw the big Rescue 47 we had recently stenciled on the back.", which is another story. Anyway after several denials about any idea of said sign taking, the chief left and I see Lenny and another member hiding behind the rescue laughing. They brought down the crosswalk sign and promptly returned it to its proper location. Lenny loved to have good time and would bring that incident up from time to time about the look on my face when I was confronted by the chief.

I am just hearing of his recovery (I was sleeping) from my brother. Not sure if Lenny's parents know yet, they were flying out to Colorado today. There is a post on his Facebook from a friend asking that everyone please do no post on it at this time. This one really hurts.

Police cars tend to do a lot of idling coupled with hard starts, lots of stop and go traffic (in the city) that drive down miles per gallon numbers. The hybrids we have been using tend to get about 10 miles per gallon according to the in car computers. Remember, highway mileage is always greater than city driving.

Knowing the NYPD, someone probably ran a car with no oil in it, and some boss thought these stickers were a great idea.

Times Square Complex (42st/7Ave to 42 st/8 Ave), Union Square, 59st/Columbus Circle to name a few. I was in the test program for the two wheel Segway, and a lot of what you see on the three wheel scooter came out of our critiques

Usually we find a tire repair shop that will throw the spare on for us. We do have a roadside repair unit, but everything has to be scheduled in our computer system, and it can take days until they get there. Once had to argue with a sergeant there because I asked over the phone for headlights ( all I needed was the bulbs, I would have put them in myself). he told me to have our RMP coordinator schedule it. I told him, i have been asking for 3 days and keep getting told its scheduled and was getting tired of driving cars on the midnights with no headlights.

I had the misfortune of have to drive the Altima at work recently. Here are two photos I took with my cell phone First up is the trunk. As you can see, the spare tire fills most of the space. The black box in the lower front right of the picture is an AED. This car does not have a police radio mounted in it, if it did there is not much room to mount it. The rear vertical of the trunk (back of rear passenger seat contains the battery. Next photo I took from the backseat looking forward. The computer mount covers important controls in the car (there is no computer to mount to it, so it is useless). Our RMP coordinator asked about having it removed, the shops told him, "if you can figure out how to do it without damaging the car, go ahead". Very tight with two people in there. Above the computer mount is the light/siren control to the left, and the control box for the blue LED message board mounted on the rear of the light bar. Hate to see where those are going top land if the airbags ever deploy.

I recently looked at a catalog sent to my firehouse by Fenton Fire (used apparatus sales). On page 3 was this listing: http://fentonfire.com/ladders_and_quints/listing.php?lid=4409 I am pretty sure this is the old Tower Ladder 5 that had so many problems and so many discussions over it s replacement on this board. Here is one of X635's photos to compare it to: http://x635photos.com/displayimage-37-1.html . New light package and some type of rebuild of the boom. Hope whoever buys it can get it to work safely.

If its the same as FDNY/NYPD then Dutchess is no good. Suffolk Westchester Orange Rockland Nassau Putnam and the 5 boroughs

Patterson will not be in either. Brewster conflicts with our carnival, and Bedford was too far away.

Great job Lansing!! Its good to see something nice written about the emergency services once in a while. The guy at Engine 64, if its the one I am thinking of, I met during a ride along in the early Nineties. He was incredible in his own way

So about $3.25 a square foot. I thought I read this house was about 7660 square feet (round up to say 7700x $3.25= $25,025. With a 30 year mortgage that turns out to just $69.51 before interest. Figure about $75 to 80 dollars a month to provide sprinklers in the house. Maybe they should have put them inside instead of watering the grass

I wanted to drive to MetroTech and choke the PD dispatcher last night. Rude, nasty, and full of the wrong info. Take this job. " Pelham Parkway on the IRT #5 for a man with a gun breaking car windows under the station." I answered for the job, and asked the dispatcher to call the complainant back, as "Pelham Parkway is an underground station, there is no parking underneath." Finally after 3 or 4 times of asking the dispatcher gives me the cross the cross streets of Lydig and Bolton. That intersection is close to Morris Park on the 5, and 49 Crime had been there for over 10 minutes already. Later, on another job, the dispatcher confused Morris Park on the 5 train, with Morrison-Soundview (on the 6 train) throwing in a booth number from the 2 train just to add to the confusion. Both times, the dispatchers copped attitude when they we questioned for more info to try and straighten things out. They should go back to limited duty cops as dispatchers, not these "trained" fools.

According to this article, Detroit Diesel is in an exclusive agreement with Pierce. http://www.fireapparatusmagazine.com/articles/print/volume-14/issue-3/features/2010-emissions-standards-limit-apparatus-engine-choices.html . I've operated many apparatus with Detroits, and never had any major problems with them.

Its just as bad on the PD side. We get calls with important info missing. Robberies in progress, with no mention of weapons involved. Jobs with vague locations (I work in transit, so we often jobs like "robbery in progress on the northbound 6 train" with no station given. Aided cases (EMS calls) with no description of whats wrong, etc.

JBE, in a nutshell you just described the NYPD to a T. From commisioner right down to some sergeants.
