These trucks take a beating everyday. Some comapnies will run 5 to 6000 alarms a year, in an apparatus designed for a 10 year lifespan. This is why the FDNY apparatus spec is so unforgiving, and no exceptions are allowed by the builders. Apparatus is not allowed to refurbished per the contract with the UFA. As long as the main components work ie engine, pumps, ladders, transmissions, etc that is the main thing with the city shops. Body work is done on an as needed basis, but if the paint fades or is scratched so be it. Upon disposal of any city equipment all markings at to be removed, which usually means spray paint, although here it looks like a roller was used.

Found this unknown Seagrave behind the fence at Brookfield today. Possible early to mid 90's. Anyone have any idea were it may have come from?

We went with the RPI personal Escape system. http://rpiinc.net/. It is attached to the Gemtor harness, has a lumbar pouch, and deploys from the left side. Training was about the same, I think we had to do 7 or 8 slides, which towards the end people were feeling it. The lumbar pouch is nice, it keeps most of the system out of the way. The rope is packaged in a shrink wrap, so it is easy to inspect. The hook is on the left side, and it does reduce access to the left bunker pant pocket. The hook is packaged so that you find the left leg strap of the Gemtor, and follow it up to the pouch when it is time to deploy .Some of our smaller members do not like it, they say it makes their waist to big to fit under bunker coats. One thing we did learn is the system does not work too well with bunker coats with zippers, as the bottom of the coat is too tight, and can hinder getting to the hook and pouch to deploy. The system does add some weight to the pants, but the only time I really notice it is when I am getting dressed for a call as you pull up the bunker pants. Occasionally the suspender will catch under the left side of the pouch.

Keep in mind that most of the employees of the Transit System are not aware of this, and will call the police on you. I once got harassed by a TA cleaner until I identified myself. Some police officers on patrol may no be familiar with this Operations Order as well, and may stop you and ask a few questions.

The memorial disrespects us, as a police officer who responded on 9/11 I was not checked to see if I was carrying a firearm. Today I am not allowed into the museum/memorial while carrying my service weapon while off duty. It is staffed by a bunch of security guards wearing light blue shirts who have no authority. They should have just made a field with a tree for each victim.

In the last link provided, it also mentions another incident in Florida where a Sutphen dropped 5 to 10 feet. That was due to a maintenance issue. I wonder if this one was something that could have been prevented thru maintenance/inspection on the part of the department involved.

I hope those two guys are riding together, and not solo in two cars. That is absolutely unsafe.

Nuts. I hope winter is not that bad again

Sounds like it would be a good candidate for a glider kit, take the engine, pump and transmission and place into a new body. Might make a small department somewhere very happy.

Don't get me wrong, there are some excellent mechanics in Fleet Services, but like the rest of the NYPD they are overworked. How they keep some of the garbage we call RMPs running is beyond me, but lately you can tell something isn't right. Cars going in for preventive maintenance coming back with little things like headlights out. Its great having a car with no headlights because both bulbs are burned out. Other things like being unable to find fluids such as brake fluid when a car runs low can be a chore, sometimes its easier to just go to the local gas station and do it yourself

Current pay scale for the NYPD. As usual we are 2 years out of contract with nothing on the horizon. http://www.nyc.gov:80/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.c0935b9a57bb4ef3daf2f1c701c789a0/index.jsp?pageID=mayor_press_release&catID=1194&doc_name=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nyc.gov%2Fhtml%2Fom%2Fhtml%2F2008b%2Fpr326-08.html&cc=unused1978&rc=1194&ndi=1

NYPD recruits are paid during the academy, and receive health benefits. After graduating, the receive a small pay increase. It is now 5 and 1/2 years to top pay.

Routine inspections my rear end. Paul Browne lies more than Baghdad Bob did. If the shops found them, it was probably already broken.

Bloomberg solved leaving the NYPD for FD, with the 25,000 contract, you loose your seniority. I could see billing if a recent graduate left for another PD, but leaving for a Fire Department I am not so sure. If I was with Pelham, Id tell the mayor go scratch. The NYPD training is nothing special, and would love to know where they came up with that amount, $50,000.

I wish there was more room too, but with the number of trucks stored there it is impossible. Here is a panoramic view of inside the warehouse from a staircase.
