  1. I would assume the reasons garbagemen are allowed to ride the back of garbage trucks and firefighters arent allowed to ride the backs of trucks because of speed. I see the garbage truck go by and its probably not goin 10 miles an hr if that, because figure they have to stop very frequently so the guys can get the garbage. Whereas fire trucks are going 30, 40 miles an hour to get to an emergency...hitting bumps and making turns along the way. Its probably all down to liability, legality, and probably many other factors.
  2. How would you go about fighting a fire in those conditions? Im assuming you staying back a distance and just drown the thing which it seems they did...but how would you fight a vehicle fire in this case zamboni on ice considering your going to be spraying water on an area you may need to go operate in...how do you operate safely in that area? Other than that...cool fire...thanks for sharing.
  3. I always wear my seatbelt in my P.O.V., I even wear it when Im just moving it. In the truck going to a call or not, I always wear my seatbelt, the only time I take it off aside from when back at the house, is when Im packing up, then i take it off, but only when I know we're almost on the scene, Ill take my belt off to pack up because our trucks have regular seatbelts like in cars...so to pack up with that is deffinately a challenge. In the ambulance, if Im up front Im belted, if Im in the back I dont always wear it...just driving around back from the hospital or something yea I wear it, but if transporting a patient I dont always just so i can help the EMT out and get him whatever equipment he may need.
  4. That was actually some pretty interesting information that I didnt know, I never knew it was the Metropolitan Fire Department and Police Department...but in the end of that article if you will, it states it perfectly, its the Fire Department of the City of New York which is why its F.D.N.Y. and not N.Y.F.D.
  5. wow...those guys were lucky they had there shelter...i wonder, when they radioed for air support, were all air units pre-occupied doing other water drops...i would think 12 or 1 firefighter for that matter in danger where they have to deploy the shelter would get immediate air support...does someone have any ideas on that?
  6. This sounds both really cool to be able to train for high rise fires, but also very effective. As for the Class A pod in the smoke house, my FFI class used it, and I think we were actually the first class to use it...it made News 12...and it was a very educational and usefull experience.
  7. Ive recently been hearing Fairview Fire dispatched twice, both times on 46.26. The first has been by a dispatcher at 60-Control, and the second by the person on the desk at Fairview Headquarters. This has happened several times now, and I was just wondering if Fairview is getting the initial dispatch from 60-Control and then dispatching themselves, or what exactly this is.
  8. If you go up there, deffinately check out both forts, I used to every time I went up there. In Lake George Village like vacguy said check out the House Of Frankenstein Wax Museum, theres a couple arcade places around there, deffinately a lot of places to buy t-shirts and random gifts, theres a small strip mall that has a great candy store, and even more stores to buy random items, as of last time I went the fireworks were on Thursdays around 9pm, I would deffinately suggest going for a ride on the Mini HaHa(not sure if spelled correctly, one of the steam boats) or even the dinner cruise ship they have, and theres even a firemans carnival hosted by the Lake George Fire Dept. that does have some gambelling as well as games for kids. I havent been up there in a few years so I dont know if anythings been changed or whats new up there.
  9. I was at Best Buy on Monday, and noticed an ambulance pulling up...at first I only saw TransCare Advanced Life Support and thought thats all it was...but then underneath that it says White Plains EMS. I though White Plains had MetroCare, does anyone have any info about this?
  10. Rest in peace Daniel. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family...may they find comfort in a tragic time.
  11. hard to really tell...but it almost looks like "Emergency Service" underneath where it says police...but yea it is pretty blurry so...
  12. ok...that makes sense...im not used to seeing TransCare with White Plains EMS, im used to MetroCare
  13. RIP Brother...its sad that he died from such injuries though. My prayers go out to his family and the Fire Department and town of Waterbury
  14. I'm just an exploerer giving his opinion...take it for what it's worth. I see something like that being useful in chemical plants, and in any sort of tunnel where there could be an increased risk for fire personel to go in, but is something that big really going to be used that often? I admit i would love to see that thing in action though.
  15. I'm only an explorer, but I'm going to attempt to give my opiniion and not have anyone yell at me or anything. I personally associate the maltese cross with the fire service, that is the one thing I always wanted was to be a firefighter, so I'm proud to wear the maltese cross on whether it be a shirt or jacket. I don't quite see how it is disrespectful that they put D.P.W. on it, big deal...that's what it is...a D.P.W. truck. I too question why the lightbar still has red lenses in it, and wonder if it still has all the sirens and everything. But unless someone from Tarrytown D.P.W. takes it and tries passing himself off as a chief, is it really that big a deal? While I dont see anything really wrong with the fact that they kept most lettering and just removed all fire department markings, I do think that they should remove the red lenses from the lightbar. It is a D.P.W. truck and at least I associate amber lights with any municipal service like D.P.W. or Highway, and red lights with police, fire and E.M.S. So I agree they should remove anything from the truck that might make it an emergency vehicle i.e. red lights and any sirens, but as for the lettering, it's just lettering. That's my opinion...but keep in mind I'm just an explorer in the fire service giving his opinion.
  16. go to policecarmodels.com. i recently bought an unmarked police car from them, i kept it unmarked, but they have decals, light kits so you can make the model lights flash, you can order custom decals, and theyve got a bunch of different cars. deffinately check out policecarmodels.com, they are one of the best sites you can find, and they are nice so they will answer any questions you have. they can also get you in touch with companies that make the car models., so contact them and ask them.
  17. I've been up since 7 this morning cleaning my basement. Had about 6 inches of water when I first woke up, and its still coming. Had the village out with a pump to help, now its just building up and we're using a shopvac to get it out...doesnt work to well because it just keeps building up. For all the guys working out there, stay safe, and try to stay warm.
  18. im with the Elmsford Fire Dept. (efd) which is in New York(ny), nd i joined in 2003. thus efdny2003
  19. I joined because I felt I had to. Ever since I was little, I always wanted to be either a cop or a firefighter. Then I found out that at 14 I could become a junior firefighter. So I did, and I felt somewhat accomplished because I was starting a lifelong goal. No one in my family is in any emergency services, although my brother is going for NYPD. But other then him, no one is in the emergency services. But I still wanted to be in, and am planning to make a lifelong career. Im actually starting college next year to get a degree in fire science and emergency medical technology, and after that a degree in fire administration and criminal justice. All to give me a better chance at a variety of job opportunities in the fire service.
  20. I got mine from Galls, and if i remember correctly, they have them in bulk. www.galls.com
  21. Hey whats up. My name is Scott, I am a junior with the Elmsford fire dept. I am the acting captain, have been for a year now, will be holding it for another year. I've been a junior for three years this June, and hopefully next year will be becoming a full volly.
  22. God bless all those in the Armed Forces who serve under the flag of the United States of America now and in the past. May God bless those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice serving on foreign and domestic soil to protect the freedoms of all people. May God bless Michael Arciola, KIA Feb. 14th, 2005 Al Ramadi, Iraq. RIP #13.
  23. Nice shots, especially of the Blue Angels.
  24. I would just like to say as a jr. with the fire department, not every jr. acts like they know everything. I'm not doubting that there are those who do try to act like that, and probably pardon the way this sounds end up getting shut up as an older more experienced firefighter corrects them. But keep in mind, we are only jr.'s or explorers, it's our job to learn just as much as it is a regular firefighter's job to learn. But instead of trying to belittle us, because just earlier today I was at a fire call for a washdown from a motor vehicle accident, but again instead of belittleing us and saying we act arrogant or anything along those lines, simply correct us in a dignified mannor. If we posted something thats wrong, correct it, because I sure know that if I've posted something that's inaccurate, or even at the fire house if I've done soemthing wrong, I'ld like to be corrected so that I know not to do that again. There are the handful of us who try to make as many calls, drills, and other department events as possible. I used to be one of the jr.'s riding down the street for a call, even when there was a blizzard. So while there is the group of jr.'s who try to act like they know everything, don't forget about the probably larger group of jr.'s and explorers who try to learn what they can, which comes in part from the full firefighters correcting us and helping us.
  25. the scanner that i have with two antennas i got from a friend. i actually have one that is a car antenna attatched directly into the scanner, the unit was opened up and attatched. then i put a telescopic antenna in the back. my other scanner that i dont use has a port on the back and on the top so check, you may have a couple ports for an antenna on your scanner. as to why it increases reception i can only imagine its because it can pick up more radio waves then just one.
