So have they began extinguishing this fire now that it seems like they've established ways to get to it? Has the fire been contained or is it still burning?
-
Sounds like they're having trouble locating where the fire is...or finding ways to get to it to attack it...is this a large fire or just a tough one to get to?
-
Im just curious, ConEd responds to all? structure fires, and anything with wires burning or compromised, so since Westchester County has the new trunk system for fire and ems, are ConEd trucks equiped with the trunk radios? Or do they issue portables to the trucks responding to the call what ever or where ever it may be so that ConEd has the ability of directly contacting fire personel on scene. Or does ConEd not have them and everything is done by phone?

I dont know the final level of the alarm, but they did call several local departments. Tarrytown obviously, Ossining, Irvington, Dobbs Ferry, Ardsley, Pocantico Hills, Briarcliff, Pleasantville, which right there is several departments from Battallions 11, 12, and 14. So my thought process to that is several local departments were being called in mutual aid, but they probably figured they were starting to drain neighboring areas and what if something happened else where that mutual aid was needed for...they would have had to go farther for the second incident because then everyone would be at Sleepy Hollow. I was not there, but I commend the IC on a job well done managing so many departments from so many battallions. Again I think they started going further up to prevent from draining local departments and battallions immediately around Sleepy Hollow on the off chance another fire started or some large incident requiring mutual aid. Sounds like a tough fire, but a job well done by all operating at the scene.

What are the Westchester Departments being called in to do? Are they being called to the scene or to backfill other departments? Does anyone know what Battalion 12's assignment will be, are they going to back fill or are they going to the scene?
-
This fire seems to be getting worse before getting better, is there an idea/estimate as to the amount of apparatus and manpower being called to the scene and to backfill? I read they called for a 12 hr shift today, are they going to look to make that a longer shift, or call in additional manpower to relieve those that will be there for 12 hrs. What are the plans since its apparently 2,000+ acres, if it does reach structures? Not only will they be dealing with the forest of a large magnitude, but they'll also be dealing with structure fires as well. Have they set up plans for if this does happen, and what additional mutual aid will be called if any if this does spread to structures?
-
How many counties have sent mutual aid to this fire? Have any Westchester Departments been called in? Whats being done for backfill for all departments being called in to the scene?

Watching it, not only does that one firefighter go in alone and without his mask on, he just takes a quick look at the house and goes in. You dont know whats burning or how long its been burning, how stable the structure is...then you have what looks like at least one possibly two police officers going to where its burning on the side of the house, grab some type of object, go to the fire then leave.

I think this is a good point. Amber lights in general are fairly effective in cautioning people that there is some type of activity ahead. However I think most people associate amber flashing lights with construction vehicles or tow trucks, and red, white, or blue flashing lights with emergency vehicles. I think that may be a big cause in people not necessarily paying attention to the amber light stick flashing left or right, because they may think its just road work, or a tow truck not an emergency vehicle be it an engine, police car, or ambulance.
-
I've noticed with our engines and ladders, it seems to just offer a bit more warning that there's some type of emergency activity ahead, however with our ambulance, it does seem to direct traffice a little better. I've put it on at scenes where I have to be in a lane of traffic, (the closest one to the side of the road of course) and people move over to the next lane further down then if I didnt have it on.

Great looking engine, I hope it serves Verplank well for many years...but just one question...the basket on the top of the cab like that, is it easier to get to there or harder? Because it looks like you would have to climb onto the hosebed and walk to the front of the cab to get. Or is it just me.

They may have been showing all different devices they can put on a turnout coat for closing, and put it on one coat so as to save money and do it on one and not 2 or three coats. Also, does the gear for aircraft firefighting have two ways of closing like normal structural firefighting, or do they have 3? As far as the built-in harness, my department had a semi-FAST drill, where we actually used them, and they were great. It was a lot easier to drag a firefighter even wearing his pack with that harness.

Wonder if the NYPD one might be used for ESU? For either transporting men, equipment, or a communications truck...maybe the same for the transit one?

I actually just finished my EMT-B and am just waiting for the results of my NYS Written Exam, and heres what I did to help me pass...when I had morning classes I brought coffee to wake up. But what actually helped me was paying attention to the instructors, writing clear precise notes both based on what the textbook said, and what the instructors said. Read the book, and do the questions at the end of each chapter, and if you have access to it, get the workbook. Also when it comes time to practicals, pay attention to what the instructor says and shows, and practice it until your sure your comfortable doing it...when you get the practical sheets, review them so you know what is expected of you at the NYS practicals. Other then that, try to have some fun, and enjoy the experience...in my class, i actuallymet some people that I might work with, and some new friends. Good luck in class.

It depends how your trying to lay it out, because you can even use Microsoft Excel, I've used that a couple times for things like that. Then depending how you were grading the test you even had the ability to determine how many people got what question wrong and tally it. Or like Goose said you can use Microsoft word, insert a graph/chart, and save it as a PDF after inserting all your data.

Snowman, do you know where those pictures were taken that theres a couple Elmsford police cars in there?

I hear certain departments get toned out for a full department response, and was wondering what is the criteria for an automatic alarm getting a full department response. Is it only for large commercial of multiple occupied, or is it based on what the department and town decide?
-
DFFD, what is the criteria for a full department response for residential and commericial...does it have to be a certain size building, or does any commercial/residential alarm get full department response?

That sounds about right...when i took my FF1, my instructors frequently stated that if we were to move out of the state, we would either have to take that states FF1, or if we got the National FF1 certification that transfers to any state i believe. looks like you got help with the CT FF1, so good luck with that and hope all goes well.

How many fire departments require either an EMT or a Paramedic certification before joining or being able to be in full active service?

Nice simple decorating, nothing outlandish...and staying festive, yet also keeping it identifiable as a fire house.
