  7. The Battalion Aide is invaluable. The Aide acts as liason with the company officers at the scene and with agencies that approach the Command Post. I am lucky to have one who is a great firefighter with whom I worked on the company level and I trust his judgement. He knows the city thoroughly and he has great mechanical skills. I can't move too far from the Command Post since I have to be accessible and have to keep an eye on the overall picture. I can dispatch him to an area of the fire scene and get a sizeup of the situation. He keeps communications with dispatch freeing me to concentrate on fireground communications. I don't want to miss a report from the people in the building for safety reasons. It's sad to see aides referred to as "drivers" since that's an oversimplification.
  8. I believe that it's because Whelen defaults the positions to Wail, Yelp and Hyperyelp but the user can program the switches in any order he/she wants. http://www.whelen.com/install/140/14045.pdf

  10. Interesting situation: house resting on iron girders supported by box cribbing awaiting new foundation. Think of the implications for fires involving this structure or neighboring ones...

  17. The aerial view can be beneficial at certain incidents. You're comments regarding the microwave downlink are also on point. The ablility of the IC and other officers to view the situation at the CP via downlink is a tremendous benefit. If there is solid communication between the CP and the aircraft the officers can ask the pilot to help in getting the perspective needed. I hope the Chiefs of Westchester know how fortunate they are to have such a resource as the WCPD Aviation Unit available...
