My Uncle was with YFD (Old Truck Company 3 - Later Ladder 11) at Station 11. He told me stories about the "Big House" down at Headquarters, when you had Truck 1 (now TL71), Rescue 1 (Now HDRescue 1), Engine Company 1 and Engine Company 3 all running out of "The Big House" Then with 3 going over to Vark Street in the Early 70's, and E-1 being disbanded, and then R1 being disbanded in 76, there was only L71. Then E305 was added for a short time, and then that was disbanded. NOW YOU GUYS HAVE ALOT OF COMPANY. YOUR NEW ALF TL71, THE NEW ALF H.D. R1, THE NEW MASK SERVICES UNIT, AND IS BAT. 1 RUNNING OUT OF HDQRS OR IS IT STILL DOWN AT STATION 3? ARE YOU STORING ANY OF THE SPARE RIGS AT THE "BIG HOUSE"???? HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR ALF TL? OR DID YOU LIKE YOUR MACK BAKER AERIALSCOPE BETTER?

I have found Survivair's SCBA's are far superior than Scots !!!

Great Page - But Don't Forget To Add both the Building Collaspe Unit (Housed at Station 11) and the Foam Unit (Housed at Station 13) to the listing of Photos, in order to complete the entire YFD Fleet. Does anyone know if there are plans to add these 2 to the listing?

Can't wait until End of September to see the New Updated Yonkers FD Apparatus Photo Site (Past and Present)
-
I have seen some really neat photos on the Internet of both Past and Present Yonkers Fire Department Rigs that would definately complete the Apparatus Photo page on this site for the Yonkers FD. Can someone present photos for addition?

If it is not at Station 13 anymore, does anyone know where the Foam Unit is being housed and who is manning it (i thought that the members of Station 13 (engine 313) were trained in the use of Foam to handle such situations) - [similiar to what the members of Engine 311 are for the Building Collaspe Unit? Any and all information on both the Collaspe and Foam Units is greatly appreciated

Given the recent unfortunate accident that E-311 had, are there plans to push up the receipt of the New E-311? If so, what would be the difference between the Engine Company Specifications and a Squad Specificiations, since the rumor is that E-311 will be a "Squad Unit" for the East Side, rather than simply an Engine Company. Any comments. (Also any update on the New E-303 and E-314)?

It is very interesting to read that you have heard that when the New Replacement Rigs for Engines 303, 311, & 314 come in, the Rig for E311 will be a SQUAD RIG. Are the new plans within the YFD, is to use E311 for East Side Responses, in lieu of Rescue 1, coming all the way from the West Side (Hdqs)? What kind of rig would the New Engine/Squad 311 be? What are the Specs? (is it going to be an American LaFrance Rig?). What about the New Engine 303 and 314? Any news on the New Engine or Ladder Company being added to YFD (Engine Company 301 or Ladder 76) going up to either Ridge Hill or possibly at Station 11 on Bronxville Road. Any news on that as well. I appreciate your insight and knowledge and look forward to your response.

Since we see alot of the "Current" fleet of trucks (FDNY, etc) being made by Code 3, how about some of the Old Classic Rigs from Yonkers FD, such as the 1958 Mack B Series Rescue One, or maybe the 1968 Mack YFD Pumper (The Old Engine 4), or maybe the 1971 Old YFD Engine Company 2 (ALF) or even maybe some of the Old YFD Ward LaFrance or American LaFrance Engines (such as the 1958 YFD Ward's such as Engine 13 or the 1959 YFD American LF Engine 1?) Any comments on this????

Maybe Truck4 can answer this one or someone else in the know. The big rumor mill floating around Yonkers, is that there is a possibility that the City of Yonkers will budget for a 2nd Rescue Company to help cover the city. I have heard this rumor from a number of sources and was interested in knowing what the people from within the YFD have to say about it. It seems to make sense since it is the opinion of the majority within YFD that the Current Rescue One makes way too many runs per year and the 2000 ALF Eagle Heavy Duty Rescue Unit is taking a beating. Having YFD Rescue One housed at Fire Headquarters on School Street to cover the West Side of Yonkers, and then adding a New Rescue Unit (YFD Rescue 2?) maybe at Station 11 on Bronxville Road to cover the East Side of Yonkers makes alot of sense. This way, if a single alarm is called out for 3 engine companies, 2 ladders, battalion 2 and the rescue, for a East Side Run, the Rescue doesn't have to travel from School Street, to lets say North Central Avenue, around where, lets say the Old Caldor's used to be. That's a lot of mileage for R1 to have to take on. If a New R2 Unit were to be dispatched from Station 11, it would make more sense. WHAT DOES EVERYONE ELSE THINK?
-
I like your idea about have a Squad 1 in place to help cover the East Side. How would, in your opinion, would that work? Would YFD purchase a New Squad Unit, have it manned by the members of Engine Company 311, and have it housed (along with Engine 311 and the Collaspe Unit) at Station 11. So, for any assignments on the East Side that might require the Rescue Unit, it could be manned by the Members of Engine 311 (Kind of like the way the Foam Unit is handled out of Station 13 and the Collaspe Unit is out of Station 11)? Then, if needed or on a 2nd Alarm Assignment, R1 could be dispatched from Station 1? I think Station 11 makes the most sense for a "New Squad 1" to be housed, since Station 11 is centrally located on the East Side, rather than lets say Station 14, which is way up on the North End of the East Side. I would be interested in your thoughts.

The Name Kiernan is synomous with the Yonkers Fire Department. His leadership, dedication and warmth will surely be missed, not only within the rank and files of the YFD, but throughout Westchester County and New York State. Hundreds of Yonkers firefighters are expected to turn out today to mourn the sudden and unexpected loss one of their own, Yonkers Deputy Chief Christopher Kiernan. He will be remembered at a funeral Mass this morning at Yonkers' St. John the Baptist Church. Kiernan, a 24-year veteran of the Yonkers Fire Department, died at his Yonkers home Friday, a day short of his 46th birthday. "Chris was the Yonkers Fire Department," said Yonkers Fire Commissioner Anthony Pagano, who worked with Kiernan for 23 years. "He was an example of dedication, an example of commitment, an example of concern for Yonkers citizens and the men that he led. This is probably one of the most devastating things I have gone through with the Yonkers Fire Department." Outside of his life as a firefighter, Kiernan loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, as well as golfing and skiing with his wife, Moira, whom he married in 1996. A New Fire Engine, a 2004 American LaFrance Eagle Pumber, called "Nodine Hill" scheduled to arrive at Kiernan's Engine Company 306 on Oak Street, later on this week will be re-named and dedicated in his honor, Pagano said. If this New State of the Art ALF Truck arrives in time, it will be at Kiernan's funeral, Pagano said. Kiernan started with the Yonkers Fire Department in 1979. He was promoted from firefighter to lieutenant in 1987, then to captain in 1991. He was promoted to assistant chief in 1995 and then deputy chief in 1999. As one of three deputy chiefs in the department, Kiernan oversaw equipment and fire suppression, Pagano said. He is survived by his wife; his mother, Lucille; brother Keith of Yonkers; and sisters Kate Goodwin and Colleen Laevsky, both of Yonkers, and Kerrie Carretta of Congers; and numerous nieces and nephews. The 10 a.m. funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist, 670 Yonkers Ave., will be followed by a burial at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson. A wake was held at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave., yesterday and Sunday. Donations in Kiernan's memory can be made to the Yonkers Fire Department Holy Name Society, Fire Station No 10, 573 Saw Mill River Road, Yonkers, NY 10710.

Thanks for the Update. My late cousin (Fred Hoffman) was with YFD for many years. I have fond memories of the Old '58 Box Mack Rescue (Transported me to Lawrence Hospital, after a traffic accident, back in the early '60's, since all Hospital Ambulances were unavailable). Question on Rescue 1. I know (as was the Old '58 Box Mack Rescue Truck) that it is quartered with TL71 at Fire Headquarters. Since R1 goes out on all "Full Assignments" as well as Traffic Accidents and Emergencies "City Wide" why doesn't YFD quarter R1 somewhere "Centrally" in Yonkers, rather than at Headquarter? Maybe a more centralized location would help ease the pounding that R1 Takes. Given that pounding, is YFD Glad that they went with the ALF Heavy Rescue Unit, say rather than a Salisbury or other Rescue Unit? Also, thanks for the Info on the Sutphens. I remember the Continentials (I also heard they were a Hunk of Junk). I remember that the Old ALF Engine 2 (later 305) was refurbed by Continential for YFD as was one of the old Aerial Ladders. They "Never" held up well (Someone in Purchasing within the City Of Yonkers needed to have their head examined when they went with those Continential Compacs. Do you remember the ALF Tillers of the Mid 80's?

According to someone in the YFD, the just recently replaced Engine 303 (Old Mack CF replaced by 2004 ALF Eagle) was one of the last Mack CF's produced. Anyone like to comment?
-
That is great news about how much YFD likes the ALF Rigs. What was it about the Sutphens that caused problems (ie: Old E303 and Old E311)? How are the plans coming for the YFD Muesum at Old Station 8? YFD definately should "clean up" the old E306 and place it in the New Muesum (Should not use it as a reserve). How is the ALF Rescue 1 holding up? I remember (fondly) the Old 1958 Mack Box Rescue that served Yonkers very very well for so many years. Does YFD plan on changing out FOAM 1 anytime soon? As far as front line rigs, I would think that with the exception of E303, E311 and E314, you are pretty much set? I would be greatly interested in knowing what you think. Thanks!

When YFD spec'd out for the New E-306, did they add anything different for this ALF Eagle then they did for E-308, 309, & 313, given E306 (along with E-303) are the 2 busiest Engine Companies in the City Of Yonkers and have to hold up under the most brutal of conditions? Also, what is YFD planning on doing with the Old E-306 (Mack CF) and are they planning on replacing E-303 soon as well?
-
Was it L73 (New Smeal Rear Mount) or was it that "pesky" Ladder 76 Again (Old Seagrave), that is used as the Aerial Ladder Spare?
-
I look forward to seeing the photo of the Old Engine 308 housed in Larchmont. Does it still have the Old 308 markings on the rig?
-
Actually, Yonkers FD Rig E902 was the Old Engine Company 308. If it is old Yonkers FD Engine 309, it is E903) Pictures of both of these "Spare Rigs" that Yonkers has lent (E902 - meaning it was the 2nd Rig purchased by the Yonkers Fire Department in 1990; and E903 meaning that it was the 3rd Rig purchased by YFD in 1990) can be found on: http://www.fdnytrucks.com/files/html/other...ate/Yonkers.htm Can you reconfirm if it was the Old Engine 309 or the Old Engine 308, based on these 2 Photos? Both of these rigs are Old 1990 Mack CF's
-
That is great news that the City of Yonkers (YFD) was able to lend you one of their spare Engines. I know that the Old Engine 309 is a reliable rig as it was just replaced by a New ALF Eagle. The Old 309 (Mack CF) was a first line rig that has been kept up well. I know that Yonkers has at least 4 to 5 Spare Rigs currently, using 2 as front line spares, with the other 2 or 3 as reserves. Sometimes Yonkers takes a bad rap as not being Volunteer Friendly (given that it is a paid department). But, when the chips are down, YFD does come through. How did you like the Old Engine 309??? (How did it perform?)

What were the last years of Service, where were they housed, and for a bonus, what was the year and make of the rig, in Yonkers for: Original Engine Company 1? Original Engine Company 2? Original Engine Company 5? Original Truck Company 3 (Later Truck Company 76)? Original Rescue Company 1 (Before it was restored to service in 2000)? Look forward to everyone's answers!
-
Yes, it was housed at Fire Headquarters, it was a Mack, but when was is disbanded? Also, any ideas on the other rigs?

Where is Rescue # 5 located and what happened to it?
-
Does anyone remember what rig "preceeded" the 1977 Salisbury Rescue Truck as EFD Rescue # 5? (A "Food Hint" : Mrs. Smith's Apple ___) [Need Make Model, Year & Nickname). Also, why didn't EFD every replace Rescue 5 after the 1977 Salisbury?
