This site always provide some nice history of some of the Recent Classic Fires in Yonkers. What I believe that everyone is looking for is a "Dedicated" site (similar to www.njscanner.com) that has 60 Control, Mount Vernon and Yonkers on it, so that everyone can hear the dispatch as it happens.

Any updates/truths to the rumors that EMTBravo will be 'shortly' supplying a Audio Feed from 60 Control, Mount Vernon Dispatch and Yonkers Dispatch???
-
In Yonkers, I believe that they have the following "Spares" that they use in case on of their Front Line Rigs goes out of Service (Engine 301 and 302 along with Ladder 76 and Tower Ladder 77). These Rigs are housed at various stations throughout the city. Yonkers also has a fleet of "Reserve" Rigs, that are completely outfitted and ready to roll, should the occassion arise (like in the case of a General Alarm Fire in the City), to which off duty personnel called in to assist can go up and man, at a moments notice. These "Reserve" Rigs are Engine 305, 315 and 317 and Ladders 78 and 79 and they are all housed up at the Ridge Hill Bunker.

Great - Look forward to seeing them - Also, keep those Old Yonkers FD Photos coming (especially any more 1960's Rig Photos)

Absolutely Correct - It was the Old Perirello's Pizzeria in the Dalewood Shopping Center, to which the owner was convicted and sent to prison for. Yonkers Tower Ladder 14, was a "Rare Sight" in Yonkers. This rig, which arrived in Yonkers a year earlier, was originally marked as "Tower Ladder 1", to which they originally were planning on running out of YFD Hdqrs. However, due to problems with the floor at Hdqrs (Rig was too heavy at the time for the floor they had in Hdqrs) and the fact that this rig spent more time "out of service" than "in service" it was never deemed by YFD, back then, as one of the Showcase Rigs in their fleet. Fact was, this rig remained out of service for almost a year, before re-appearing at Station 14, as Ladder 14 (Station 14, at that time, had a floor that could hold the weight of the rig). To my understanding, from personally speaking to the Chief of YFD at the time (there was no commissioner back then), =tThis Tower Ladder had more problems remaininng in service due to problems with the rig. It spent more time either just sitting idle at Station 3 or at the Repair Shop than in service. However, later on as Ladder 14, or Ladder 70, and then eventually repainted, it had some useful years in the city. But, as with any New Type Of Apparatus (one of the first Mack Baker TL's in the County), it had its "Bugs" that needed to be worked out by the manufacturer.

Tom - I also would like to Echo the sentiments of everyone, who really enjoyed seeing these classic YFD Photos. As I remember growing up, my Uncle (who worked out of Station 11) would drive my dad and I, on a Saturday Morning, down to "Downtown Yonkers" to pick up a few items from some of his colleagues at the various statoins on the West Side (grew up on the east side). I remember going into the Old Station 3 on Riverdale Avenue and seeing the Old ALF 700 Engine 3 brought back a "TON" of memories. If you have any other photos of some of the Vintage Rigs of the 1950's and 1960's from Yonkers, in such candid format, that would be a true TREAT for everyone. We look forward to the next set and THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU !!!

In my opinion, for Westchester County, it has to be the MASSIVE General/Mutiple Alarm Fire in Yonkers on Bronx River Road a few years back, to which not only was New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, Greenville, Eastchester, etc.etc., but a Full Battalion from New York City was brought up to help knock down the fire. I can't remember any other that was SO HUGE !!!

Contrary to F009FOH, A new YFD HQ was already proposed and announced to the public as part of the First Baseball Stadium Sstructure Proposal. This first go around called for the Ballpark to be built on Chicken Island and where the current YFD Headquaters stands, again the last time the developer made their proposal. It is also my understanding, that the developer had agreed to pay for a New YFD Headquarters, should the existing one be displaced to make room for the New Ballpark. Given the Ridge Hill Project, if it proceeds as planned, would also displace the YFD Ridge Hill Training Bunker, and with such, YFD's Training Facility would also have to be relocated. Thus, the rumored plans for a New YFD Headquarters and Training Facility could indeed be a reality, and at no cost to the taxpayers of Yonkers. These facts have been known already to the public. The "Simple" question is, does anyone know if the developer, within their presentation yesterday, make any comment or notation concerning a New YFD Headquarters/Training Facility?
-
Based on what I read in today's NY Journal News, the Ballpark at Chicken Island is getting closer to becoming a realitiy, as it is marked for Phase 1 within the Development Plan intoduced yesterday. I am still curious on where the Yonkers Fire Department plans on building its New Fire Headquarters and New YFD Extensive Training Facility, that has been talked about, in conjunction with the Development Plans for Southwest Yonkers. Does anyone with "Inside Knowledge" have any updates? (PS - Dr. Zuki - I will be right back at you with the GFR Stuff)

Great Old Photos, circa 1970. Nice to see the Old Engine 3 (58' ALF that was Capped, if I am correct?). I think that the New Station 3 on Vark Street had not yet opened, so therefore, Engine 3 was still running out of the Old Riverdale Ave station. It appears that one of the Photos might be on someone at the Wheel of what appears to be the wither 68 ALF Mid Mount Old Truck 1 (that ended up as Truck 2) or the 67 Mack C Closed Cab). Would be terrific is you could find any other photos taken by your dad from back then, especially more of the rigs from that period of time.

For now, this is the only one I know of, is NJSCANNER.COM. But hopefully and maybe in the future, Seth and EMTBravo might be able to have a Link off of the EMTBravo.net web site, that would link us to the YFD Audion Page (and a separate link for others such as Moutt Vernon, New Rochelle, White Plains, Countywide, etc). THAT WOULD BE TERRIFIC. BUT, for now, here is a linnk that has Nothern New Jersey Audio, that also monitors Yonkers FD: www.njscanner.com Its not that bad, if you don't mind having to listen to all of the New Jersey Calls, and the fact that it only allows you to listen for 30 minute intervals at a time. Thus the hope and wish that Seth is able to do something on this site. Hopefully, this will temporarily help you out. Let me know what you think?

In addition to the Questions raised above that I am hopeful someone might be able to answer. Any word on the anticipated delivery time on the 3 New HME/Smeal Rear Mount Ladder Trucks for YFD?
-
Great to see the New E-303, E-304, AND E-314 on the Assembly Line at ALF, that are due in March 2006. Any word on when Yonkers plans on taking delivery of their New ALF Eagle Rescue Pumper Squad 311? (Originally supposed to arrive in Yonkers in January 2006). Also, interesting to hear about the fact that Yonkers is going to commission "Ladder 77" for the Ridge Hill Project (originally word was that it was going to be Ladder 76). If it is going to be "77" (which is great), what number designation are they planning for the Spare Tower Ladder (currently 77)? [Maybe Reserve TL 76?]. Also, any word on whether or not the Newly Commissioned Ladder Company 77 will be housed with Engine Company 310 at a New Station 10 near Ridge Hill? (If so, I would hope that YFD would make Station 10 the YFD Muesum and scrap the plans of using the Old Station 8 the Museum). If anyone can share any insight on these few quesetions, that would be terrific.

What ever became of the Old Mount Vernon Fire Department Snorkel 1? If I remember Correctly, it was the only active "Snorkel Unit" active in Westchester County. What did FDMV do with it? And, why did they abandon the idea of having a Snorkel in Mount Vernon? (I am not sure, but does a Snorkel have other applications that both a Straight Stick and a Tower Lader don't?). Any and all information on the Old FDMV Snorkel 1 (Photos would be TERRIFIC as well), please let us know.
-
If I had to guess, I would say that the Old FDMV Snorkel 1's first real "Big Job" in Mount Vernon, would have been the Fire on 4th Avenue and 1st Street, that took out the Old Fanny Farmer Candy Store, Old Bee Hive Restaurant, and the Old Pool Hall? Am I right?

Is there any updated information available pertaining to where YFD is planning on Relocating the Ridge Hill Bunker Site, since the Development of Ridge Hill, apparently, is moving forward. There had been several rumors running around (such as if they proceed in Building the New YFD Headquarters/Training building, or the Downing Street DPW Garage Area or Down behing the Yonkers Department of Recreation Building.) Does anyone have any news/updates on this??
-
Also, with the possibility of Reserve Ladder 76 going into Permanent Service, in conjunction with the Ridge Hill Project (A New Station 10?), will YFD then activate Ladder 69 to replace Ladder 76 as a Spare Ladder (along with Spare/Reserve Ladders 78 and 79 and Reserve/Spare Tower Ladder 77)?
-
Will it be both Fire, Police and Rescue/Ambulance Incident Reports or just Crime Incidents? If all, then that would be terrific news to all here on EMTBravo.net
-
My understanding was that the New New Ladder Trucks (70, 74 and 76)were going to be identical to the Spec that was laid out for Ladders 72 and 73 (Smeal 100ft Rear Mount, HME chassis, 500 HP Detroit Diesel, Allison Transmission) See Photo at: http://www.yfd.org/app72lad.htm

I agree with x635's assessment. TL71 historically, has the most runs of any of the Ladder Companies within the City (along side TL 75). Since it is a 1998 ALF Eagle, 7 to 8 Years is not bad at all. And the probability that YFD will make the Current TL71 into the Spare TL77 also makes sense. The Current TL77 Mack Baker Aerialscope has seen better days and you always want the men who ride the trucks to have at least the best available. As for the HME/Smeals that make up 307, 310 and 312, each has severed the city well. I believe that YFD really likes the ALF Eagle Pumpers and will probably go with the ALF's (If the Bid comes in as they expect). Finally, I would "Bet The Bank" that the Additional Mid Mount Smeal Ladder will be for the "Eventual" Front Line Ladder Company 76, that will be placed into service at the eventual New Station up at or near Ridge Hill (Maybe at the Old Water Works Site on Tuckahoe Road) as the New Station 10 (to be housed along side of Engine 310). I may be wrong, but this is what I suspect.

Mount Vernon Foam Unit (Refurbed Airport Truck) and Yonkers Foam Unit (Sutphen - Old Engine 311). I can't remember the last run that either of these 2 units have gone out on. (although the Collapse Unit out of Station 11 in Yonkers has had a few runs recently, most notiably the job in New Rochelle last year)
-
Can anyone tell us whether or not the Newly Revised Plans for the Ridge Hill site in Yonkers, still has for a New Yonkers Fire Department Station to be constructed? (Maybe a New Station 10, that had be rumored, to which not only would Station 10 with Engine 310 be located to Ridge Hill, but that a New Frontline Ladder Company would be activated [Ladder 76] and housed at this New Station 10?), I just read about the 2006 Yonkers Capital Budget Plan approved the other day, allocated $4.1 Million Dollars to the Yonkers Fire Department (Presumably for the Purchase of a New Rescue One [Even Bigger] and to replace Ladders 70 and 74], but I wasn't sure if the Purchase of a New Ladder 76 was also included in this?
-
Also, any word on where the YFD Ridge Hill Bunker is relocating to, now that it appears that the Ridge Hill Project (with that potential New Fire Station 10) is closer to reality?
-
I heard that Yonkers was not really thrilled with the 3 Sutphens they purchased in the 90's (Current Engine 314, Reserve 305, and the FOAM UNIT). That is mainly why Yonkers is now a ALF and Smeal City for its Fire Rigs. (they both meet the specs that the City Of Yonkers requires and both the ALF's and the Smeals hold up really well, in the rough Yonkers hills and terrain.) http://www.yfd.org/app314eng.htm http://www.yfd.org/images/appResEng305.jpg

What YFD Rigs run with a Captain and what run with just a Lt. ? Or is it based on Shift (Overnights with LT., Daytime with Capt.) ?
