Just heard a run from YFD, where Engine 305 was dispatch out (appartently out of Station 7) along with 307, 312, 313, Ladder 73 and 75. I thought 305 was a Reserve Apparatus for Yonkers. Does anyone know why YFD 305 is on Front Line Duty?

Why Was Rescue 5 Disbanded back in the 1990's? With as large of a cover area that Eastchester is (Eastchester, Tuckahoe and Bronxville) a Rescue Company makes sense?
-
Great Video - Saw the Old Rescue 5 (Brockway). I thought that R5 was "put out to pasture" and EFD choose not to replace it? Also, in the opening credits, reference was made to Engine 28 and Ladder 15. I thought that E28 was decommissoned a few years back (used to run out of the Tuckahoe Station) and Ladder 15 was a spare (i believe that it is stored at the Bronxville Station). Am I correct or are they both back in front line service?

Here is a recent photo of the New ALF Eagle Heavy Duty Tandem Axel Rescue Unit that also can be found on the YFD.org Web Site

Very Good Points raised pertaining to both YPD, Empress and YFD. My understanding from reading the proposal from the Developer was that the Developer was willing to assist in funding an additional fire company (maybe a New Ladder Company) as well as supporting the construction of a New Fire Station to help cover this New Ridge Hill Development. I do agree, that the new structures that will be eventually built up at this New Ridge Hill Development, will be Modern/ Fire Resistant Buildings, with all of today's modern safety features. However, you also have additional population that will be located up there and with the YFD First Responder Program, you should see an increase in the amount of calls (10-45's) that will occur. Same for EMPRESS, which "may" result in the possibility of adding a BLS Unit to Yonkers? There has been talk of a New YFD Station being built at the foot of Ridge Hill, along Tuckahoe Road. Only time and the progress of the Ridge Hill Development will tell.

Great News about the impending 4/2 In Service Date for the New 307, 310, and 312 ALF Eagles. Question, have decisions been made yet for the renumbering of the 4 Old Smeals (304, 307, 310, & 312) and the Old 314 Sutphen as either Spares or Reserve Units (ie: 301, 302, 305, 316, 317?) and what will be the designation of the Old Mack CF 306 (now 317) once it has completed it refurbing?

A Couple of Additional Questions For Chief Fitzpatrick (or anyone else within YFD). Is this New Collapse Rig will be similiar in nature to a Heavy Duty Rig, will ALF be looked at as one of the main manufacturers to bid on it, or are there other Fire Apparatus Manufacturers who specialize in the manufacture of specialized rigs such as a Collaspe Rig? Also, will be New Foam Rig being a Specially Designed Rig, specifically for the use of Foam? Finally, with the photo (below) of the 3 New Rear Mounted Smeal Ladder Trucks (very impressive) has the New Ladder 74 with the Lettering of YONKERS just below the overhang of the ladder and above the front windshield. Will Ladders 70 and 73 also have the same lettering?

Is this picture taken at ALF in the Carolinas or at Campbell Supply in New Jersey?

Are those 2 Photos of the New ALF Eagle Tandem Axel Rescue R1 taken at American LaFrance or from Campbell Supply?

With the upcoming arrival of 3 New ALF Eagle Pumpers to replace the current 3 Smeal Rigs for 307, 310, and 312, would that mean that 2 of the old Smeals would be converted into a New Collapse Rig and a New Foam Rig (To replace the Current 1988 Mack Collaspe Rig and the Current Supthen Foam Rig) OR are do the plans call for the purchase of 2 New Pieces of Apparatus, specifically designed to be as a Collapse Rig and a Foam Rig?

Here is a photo of the very first Continential Compac. In the late 1970's, a company called Continental began making a new brand of fire apparatus in Massachusetts. The first unit ever built was called a Compac and it began it's life as a demonstrator unit in 1979. Like every Compac built, this unit was equipped with a 1250 GMP pump and 500 gallon tank. In 1981, the company's first built fire engine was purchased by the Town of Essex, Massachuesttes and placed into service as Engine 1. It remained with that department for 22 years until it was replaced this year with a new Pierce pumper. In a somewhat unusual circumstance, Mr. Dick Barlett had the distinguished duty of not only delivering this historic piece of fire apparatus, but he also picked it up as the trade in 22 years later.

I have not heard or read anything new on the Downtown Development in Yonkers as it relates to the Yonkers Fire Department. The last read about the Downtown Development was the Artist Rendition of the New YFD Headquarters and Training Facility. The last I had read about the Ridge Hill Site and YFD, was that YFD was planning on moving the Ridge Hill Bunker to another site (possibly the Newly Planned Fire Headquarters, which I understand is being planned as a Fire Headquarters and Training Facility), and that the plans as outlined in the Project Plan for Ridge Hill, was to add 1 additional Fire Company, allegedly a Ladder Company (Ladder 77). Now where that new Ladder Company will be quartered is another question. Rumors (and strictly rumors, so everyone take stock in it being only a rumor) have been mentioned about the possibility of creating a New Station 10 at the Old Waterworks Building on Tuckahoe Road, housing Engine 310 and this New Ladder 77, with the Old Station 10 being used a the site for the Yonkers Fire Department Muesum (instead of the old carrage house Station 8). Again, this is what I have read or heard. Does anyone else have any additional information on this?

From what I was told by a retired YFD Lt. (Family Relative) the Continential Compac Rigs were not well received by the men in YFD at the time. Their life cycle was very minimal (Not only did they deliver, I believe 6 Engines for 307, 308, 310, 312-,313 and 314 - one of which was a refurbed 1971 ALF Engine formally Engine 2, but they also refurbed a 1956 ALF Tiller that was purchased from some department out in Long Island, that was being used at the time as Ladder 74. A photo of the Pre-Refurbed Ladder 74 can be found on Michael Messar's Web Site). Again, these rigs did not last long as YFD purchased more Mack CF's to replace them and they eventually went into the Spare Pool. If my memory is correct, when Yonkers purchased that Old Mack Engine from, I believe Hastings, they used that rig over the Continential Compacs as a spare truck (More reliable I guess)

Does Mount Vernon FD still have a FOAM UNIT housed at the Fulton Avenue house? (Last word was that they had that Old Airport Rig there, but am not too sure - Long time ago FDMV had an Old Mack C Rig used as their Foam Unit housed out of the Fulton Avenue House). ALSO, when did FDMV remove the Ladder Company from the Fulton Avenue House and WHY?

Obviously, safety comes first and foremost. NFPA has very detailed guildelines as it relates to both the right and proper lighting systems on Fire Fighting Apparatus as well as Warning Sirens. Blowing and Exhasting Air Horns, Having Multiple Mechanical and Electronic Sirens, and a multitude of Lighting Systems, LED, Strobe, Mars 888, Roto Rays, etc. is not necessarily the answer. The "BEST" Lighting and Warning Systems on a rig, is what is best for that Municipality. In some Fire Districts, Federal Q's with Mars 888's might be the best for them. For others, it may not be the case. I am sure that Roto Rays work well and are a terrific Emergency Lighting Device for some Fire Departments who use them. If not, I am sure that the Roto Ray Company would no longer be in business. Same for Federal and Mars. I happen to like the Roto Ray System. But that is simply my preference and I cannot speak for departments that use them and like them nor can I speak for departments that don't like them. Again, it is what is best for their own department and its rigs. Yes, I would like to see the New YFD Rescue One Rig have a Roto Ray on it. But it might not work for Yonkers. The Hills along with the Bumps in the Roads in Yonkers, might not bear well for a Roto Ray, which could be damaged from such rattling and jaring from the rugged turain in Yonkers. I just don't know and I am not qualified to answer that. Only those within YFD who are responsible for specing out their rigs know best. The secret is designing a Apparatus Package that is best for the Department using it, across all boards. Compartments, Lighting, Warning Signals and Sirens, Equipment, Seating, Functionality, etc. Its "That Simple"

Also, any updates to share on the New Rescue 1 Tandem Axel ALF Eagle Rig?

What are everyone's opinions pertaining to when a Department is drawing up their Specifications on New Apparatus being ordered and the Lighting and Siren Packages that they want to have added to their new rigs. Allot of discussions have come up recently pertaining to Federal Q Sirens, Mechanical Sirens, Roto Rays (See Attached Photo of Washington DC Rig), Dual Mars 888 Warning Lights, Powercall Sirens, etc. etc. A number of our Local Departments have New Rigs currently on order. Do you think that having allot is "Too Much" and not effective or having a Rig "Fully Stocked" with all of the latest, such as Dual Mars 888 Warning Lights, A Roto Ray on the Front, Federal Q or Powercall Sirens, makes the Rig more effective when responding to an Emergency Call (Day or Night) an truly effective? Your Thoughts?
-
An Apparent Satisfied Roto Ray User. Does anyone else have any comments (Pro or Con) pertaining to either the Roto Ray System or the Mars 888 Light System
-
In addition to the Washington DCFD Photo Above (With Use of Roto Ray), here is a photo of a Rig that has "Mutiple Sirens", to be used as part of the topic discussion of either "Just Right" or "Too Much"
-
Interesting that I just happened to go by the Providence Fire Department Headquarters Building Today and it looks "Very Much" like the design that has been reflected on the Rendering for the New Yonkers Fire Department Headquarters. Take a look for yourselfs and let me know if you see the resemblence.

The last word that I read on EMTBravo pertaining to the New ALF Heavy Duty Tandem Axel Rescue Rig was either a Late February - Early March Delivery, but that was late last year. Although I don't believe that it has been confirmed, I hope that the rumors about having a Roto Ray and Dual Mars 888 Warning Lights installed on the New YFD Rescue 1 actually become reality. It would make this New Rig look OUTSTANDING !!!!

Bring Back FDMV Snorkel 1 - Now there was a really reliable truck that served Mount Vernon for many many years!

Any updates on the New ALF Eagle HD Tandem Rescue Rig and the 3 Smeal Ladders?
