mlcougar2001 liked a post in a topic by fdalumnus in Village Of Port Chester Disbands Career FD
The Pawling situation was slightly different. The Pawling PD was comprised of part-timers, many who worked full time PD jobs elsewhere. There were ,of course, a few bad apples that constantly made life "difficult" for some of the residents. Personalities won out over principles. (Sounds familiar doesn't it?) The County Sheriffs Dept picked up many of the part-timers after taking over. Better service? I doubt it.
Now back to Port Chester. As any firefighter who works or worked in a combination dept knows, the vollies who hate the "paidman" the most are the ones totally incapable of passing the requirements to becoming a professional firefighter. They are, to say the least, green with envy. Then, there is the next bunch who are successful in life and harbor no resentment. They tend to take a back seat (unfortunately) to the issues because they have a life and can "take it or leave it," when it comes to the FD. The remainder, usually the highest percentage of members, active or not, some living in Florida, North Carolina, etc. just don't give a rats ass. As was stated in prior posts, the union needs to get some volllie support. Ang's post seems to say there is some, and hopefully it grows.
The next thing the PCFD needs to do is impeach all three chiefs. Lets face it, they're losers. Didn't the head chief get thrown out of his prior volunteer dept ? They need guys like Joe" Pug", Bob Thalhiemer, Vinny Lyons ,sr., and Bill Neathercott to come back and lead the dept. They were gentlemen, who didn't play games with anyone, especially with the public's safety. Enough of me ranting. 32 years in the fire service and the only thing that got better were the rigs.

I am throwing my 2 cents in again might be 3 cents with inflation PC is claiming 150 interior and 150 exterior firefighters. its all speculation but lets just look at the 150 interior. questions I would have to ask. do all have nfpa physicals? all mask fit tested?? bail out qualified? with personal ropes? ages of the interior firefighters?? training of the firefighters??--osha-bbp haz mat?? do they all live within the confines of PC? do the Officers and Chiefs have additional training above the firefighter lever?? if what the mayor claims to be true then these records should be made available to the public to assure them that they are safe. does any one of you know the answers??
I am sure there are well trained well qualified firefighters in Port Chester. it just how many.

I think your comments are very ignorant and you being an IC yourself should keep to the facts on an incident and if you have any questions or concerns voice them in a professional manor. Monday morning quarterbacks are great. You should be ashamed of yourself, if you think you can come and do our job take the test and get on the list.

Bottom of Da Hill give it a rest already! You are just making yourself look even more and more clueless. No one agrees with you here (how can you not see that?), no one with any education will agree with you here, and no one wants to read any more of your posts trying to hijack and ruin this thread with your personally biased, absurd claims of favoritism. I'm starting to suspect you're just upset your department wasn't called. Again, wrong incident, wrong thread, and wrong time to be making such stupid claims.

Consistency... the only consistency I see around Westchester is an increasing demand for service, reduced funding for said service and a lack of support for those providing said services. This doesn't just apply to dispatch, this goes for everyone in the field as well.
We should all be wearing toilet paper suits with the amount of sh!t thrown at us...

New Rochelle & White Plains are part of the Westchester Special Operations Task Force (WSOTF) and both regularly train together along with Eastchester, Fairview, Greenville, Hartsdale, Scarsdale, Mt Vernon, Yonkers and recently Pelham Manor and Larchmont have been added. Our plan is to always send a minimum of 2 squads giving us at least 10ffs/2off.
At todays Incident NR, WP & WCTRT were all dispatched at approximately the same time. NRFD command officers arrived seconds ahead of WPFD R-88. Afew minutes later NRFD R4 & R54 (collapse Unit) arrived another approx. 7 minutes WPFD Collapse unit arrived.
White Plains & NRFD personnel worked as a team using NRFD & WPFD equipment. Their struts from R-88 were staged 1st and used while our trench panels arrived and were in the ground before theirs arrived.
The local IC decides, based on input from the teams.
WCTRT arrived at some point after that (a few of their members were on-scene earlier, but without equipment). They were staged as a back-up and also assisted ConEd in setting up the 2nd VAC truck..

I don't like getting into political debates but, my volunteer FD's do not track hours worked and do not require me to do a certain amount of hours a week. Hanging out at the firehouse is not considering working. The only time you are considered an employee of the village is from when the alarm tone sounds until the apparatus is returned to station. So if my Department does about 1100(busy for a volunteer department) calls per year each call taking approximately less the 1 hour (for argument sake lets say 1 hour) that's 21 hours per week on average for a busy department. So even if you add in an 8 hour's for training, meetings, cleaning fire apparatus Etc. per week which is unheard of the argument is invalid.
Republican or Democrat I agree with "Obamacare" and I think if when the exchanges open on Oct. 1st and 56% of the 30 million uninsured people can get insurance for less then 100 then it will be a success. if not then I would be wrong

Barry I know you are covered under liability insurance lets say you fall down the stairs and/or cut your hand etc. and that would be covered under the 8 hours a week I stated during drilling, cleaning and maintaining equipment. But as far as logging hours greater then 30 hours a week to make the municipality liable to insure the volunteer I think is a farce.
I will go as far to say on an individual basis you might get someone to try and get a municipality to give them insurance because they can't or are not willing to get it themselves, and they want to try and make there case. In my opinion, if this person try's this with any village manager that has half a brain they are just going to tell them "good luck with that".

mlcougar2001 liked a post in a topic by Remember585 in How Does Your FD Handle Rehab?
In light of a recent incident discussion, I wanted to ask everyone how their department handles the rehabilitation of firefighters at incidents. Remember, it doesn't have to be a working house fire in the middle of July - we all need rest, replenishing of fluids and relief no matter what kind of incident and regardless of the time of year.
I'll take the lead and start. On any confirmed fire (10-75) in our jurisdiction, we get a minimum of two ambulances, a Medic and a rehab unit from Cortlandt VAC (or another if they aren't available). Once we reach a 2nd Alarm, additional resources are dispatched including EMS, relief personnel and even a canteen from Salvation Army, if needed.
For any prolonged operation, we request EMS (if not already there) to look after our personnel.
We carry bottled water on all apparatus, and keep a misting fan on our Rescue. We recently gave another misting fan to EMS, and we give them cases of water to keep on the rigs for our personnel.
We're working together with EMS on setting up more firm procedures for what needs to be done.

mlcougar2001 liked a post in a topic by efdcapt115 in Yonkers FD Station 11 Closing?
I'm picking this thread up, I don't know what was removed according to Chris, but I'd like to pipe in here. If there is "chatter" of a firehouse closing (I haven't heard about anything like that in Yonkers myself, except here in this thread) then let's please not be offering up thoughts like this one. To reduce the idea of a fire station closing to the simple idea of one being architecturally superior in your opinion, is quite insensitive to the idea that there might be firefighters, human beings and good ones at that imo, whose jobs could be jeapordized as a result.
I've followed your postings in the Stamford thread, you seem to have lined up with this FPCoggs fella, so you might be expressing your talking points that you believe in regarding the Stamford situation, but try not to let it bleed over into Westchester County.
Everybody is facing challenging financial situations right now. Municipalities are doing things, they are making cuts, they have laid people off; the fire service and the police departments are always first on the target list when the times get tough. It received little attention here when a post showed the tax collection revenue breakdown for Westchester County. The school budgets are incredible. Well over 50 percent of every tax dollar collected in Westchester goes to schools. 2 percent goes to fire districts. Cities break down from their own budgets. The percentages are different, but the attacks are always the same.
The gains that professional firefighters and cops have made over the decades are impressive. We and the generations before us, fought and went to courts and built our jobs into respectable careers. Naturally, when the economy goes down, and it always eventually goes down, just like it always eventually goes up, the "civil servant" comes into the headlights when things go down, and governments run their budgets down. The politicians, and their supporting casts of political appointees protect themselves by pointing a finger at cops and firemen who they just sat across a table from and negotiated a contract a few years ago. Everything was rosy for the economy, the plans were large, etc. And then the pile on begins. People are outraged by their tax bills on their homes in Westchester. Fair enough, but come up with smart solutions. Emergency services should be DEAD LAST on the target list for politicians. But, people forget. Their memories are short. They forget about 9/11, they forget about the homegrown terrorists who are spreading all over the country planning to do harm on our citizens again.
But, complacency on the part of the general public eventually leads them to point the finger at the firehouse. The disgruntled guy down the street who got screwed out of his job by the greedy corporation he worked for, who sent his job overseas to Bangladesh, he's usually the first guy complaining about the cops and firemen. Then there's the envious, the ones who couldn't make it, couldn't score well enough, whatever. You can count on a percentage of those guys to be loudmouth whiners about civil servants, complaining about taxes, etc. Then there's the "monnied" amongst us. Suprising how the richest, the elite, wind up holding most of the political seats. Nah, I'm not saying they "buy" their positions of power.
It's funny though how so many times, a firefighter local ends up sitting down across the bargaining table from the well heeled crowd. The "elected." Laughing out loud.
Okay, so that's my soap-box entry, good luck YFD, keep safe out there.
