Follow the link below to see photos of the FDNY "Three Forty Three" and "Fire Fighter 2" as they progress through the build stage FDNY Fireboat The two new vessels, along with a pair of smaller SAFE boats will be delivered later this year at a cost that will exceed $40 million. They will be 140' long and draw 9', propelled by 4 2,000hp diesel engines. The engines will also power the 50,000 gallon per minute pumps. The pumps will be able to shoot water 700' from the midships monitor nozzles and can also be used to supply land units through 5" hose up to 5 miles away. The first vessel will replace the vessel used by Marine Co. 9 out of Staten Island, the "Fire Fighter" built circa 1938.

Who knows. Things change everyday. I will say, however, that Marine 1 is about 20 years younger than Marine 9 and in much better shape.

How does the LPR handle multiple plates in the frame? (i.e. on the highway with two lanes of traffic beside the cruiser? Does it read both plates at once?

This is a silly drama about guys in turn-out gear, NOT a show about NYC firemen. There are a lot of things that should be a little bit more accurate before they start worrying about getting the type of apparatus correct. Besides, the vast majority of people watching don't know the difference and don't care.

If only that were true. Sadly the city does not give you enough notice that you are being hired. I wasn't even able to give a standard 2 week notice. These guys recieved letters 8 or 9 days before the academy was to begin. 3 days after that were told the offer was recinded. Kinda hard to go crawling back to your boss after that.

As mentioned above.... It was indeed installed to carry a hotstick for the moving of downed powerlines. However, there was never sufficient training in their use and no one was particularly fond of using one. The job decided to take them out of service a few years ago. We use the tube to hold misc. items, like a steal hook for fire escape stretches. Side note. Only the top section of black hose below the tube is hard suction. Each engine has one 10ft section. The lower one is flexible and is one of the more common ways that the ECC hooks to the hydrant.

The 3 Engines currently closed at night: 4, 161 and 271. Ladder 53. Other than that NO ONE has a clue. There are rumors, but no official announcements. Fact is, the city council has already begun the fight against the closings. Hopefully they'll be successful in their attempt to lesson the budget cut. Companies will most certainly still be shuttered, but I'd like to think that they'll settle for fewer than they are asking for. Too bad our commish is a total stoolie for the mayor. I know he has to work with the guy and no doubt has to make some budget cuts, but he hasn't shown one bit of back-bone in defense of the FDNY.

The problem is all of these silly Villages and Towns. They should have far less authority. The ANSWER is the county. Why are we talking about abolishing it?

Sad that no justice will be had for the families of the deceased members and sad that we as firemen will continue to be put in jeopardy by thoughtless tenants and landlords who will do whatever they please. The court has seemingly set a precedent that tenants and building owners can't be held responsible for conditions they created in the event of a Fr's death.

I cannot imagine how terrible it was to have lost someone in your academy class. Terrible thing to have happen during the best time in someone's life, the time that they are achieving their goal. That said, I hope you know someone who can clarify where the money from T-Shirt sales is going, because as you can imagine, no one is going to want to help fund a frivolous lawsuit. I would make that clear before the sign-up in every firehouse kitchen ends up in the round file. Hopefully the money can be alocated towards a memorial plaque or college fund. Okay, now.........GET BACK IN THE SINK!

Probie Sears was completing the FST course. Functional Skills Training. This is, for lack of a better description, the CPAT test on steroids. I think we can all agree that CPAT is no true test of fire ground rigors. FST is not a new test and was not implemented simultaneous to the start of the FDNY's most "diverse" academy class to date. The law suit would have you believe that it was and thus had weeding out minorities as it's intention. Perhaps the 286 graduates of that class, more than 1/3 minority, could explain how they all made it through. The course is actually easier today than it was as recently as 2 years ago. It is an exercise that takes approximately 15 minutes, depending on the candidate, and is completed predominantly while breathing air from an SCBA and in full PPE. The candidate begins the course walking to the 5th floor on air, in gear and carrying a roll-up (1 length of hose) and a standpipe kit. You walk down and exchange the roll-up and stand-pipe kit with a length of hose that has a 15' tail that drags, as though stretching a line in a walk-up apt. When you arrive with this back to the 5th floor you then pull 2 lengths of hose up the stairway well hole, again simulating a tenement stretch for an engine company. After walking down again the candidate those through a course that has a blacked out search tunnel, a dummy drag tunnel, a hose advance tunnel and a simulated parapet that requires the candidate to climb a 5' wall and mount the tip of an aerial ladder and descend about 10'. There is also a forcible entry simulator and a few others. Someone in decent shape can complete this course in under 15 minutes and MANY of them can complete this course without exhausting a 45 minute cylinder which is impressive considering the work load. I went through this course once every week for each of the months I was in the FDNY academy. This was a terrific and true test of one's ability. At the completion of the course you really felt you could do anything. Anyone who would suggest this course is somehow racist or harder than is necesary, well, I say you obviously have never had to carry a length of 2 and a half with a 30 lb. stand-pipe kit to the 15 floor of a housing project and THEN have to go to work fighting a fire. It is a true disgrace that this woman would sully the name of her deceased husband, the dedicated instructors who run the finest academy in the world and the FDNY, all predicated upon a frivolous claim of racism. This case should never see a trial as it is baseless, predicated upon misinformation and is itself in fact racist.

The economy sucks and everyday they're looking for someone new to blame. One day they say that $80,000 is robbing the system and the next day the publish and article that says making $123,000 in NYC puts you in the middle class at best..... It's all there to stir the pot. Don't pay too much attention to it.

In his budget address, Mayor Bloomberg announced several measures to meet the 7% cut he required of the FDNY. These cuts include the elimination of the Queens Fire Marshall base, reductions in civilian staffing and the possible closing of 16 companies in two installments over the next fiscal year. He will look to the union for some concessions to avoid the closing of companies. One of the concessions he seeks is the reduction of manning on 64 engine companies from 5FF and an Off. to 4FF and an Off. No layoffs are planned, however there will be no hiring in 2009, at the very least.

There needs to be some mention of a non-emergency agency that CERTAINLY deserves credit for the swift removal of passengers from the A320. That's the NY Waterways Ferries. They were lined up and nosed in to that plane pullling people off in droves. They happened to be in the area and already running, so they were able to respond quickly. I think the point here is, even if civilian agencies (like NY Waterway) don't self deploy as they did yesterday, there are people and business's with the ability to help in an emergency such as this. Tug boats have firefighting monitors and pumps, there are ferries and other commercial vessels with services to offer. Without the help of several agencies, this would have been a much longer operation. NYC has a tremedous amount of water and these bodies of water are only served by 3 year round FDNY Marine Co's. and the NYPD covers the water from the Yonkers/Bronx boarder on the Hudson, through the East River and NY Harbor all the way to the tip of the Rockaway's with only 7 or 8 full time Harbor Launches (I believe I have that number correct, but help me out please). The water is thin on resources, look at what's out there to help you.

They should..... ......there are shortcomings on a lot of fronts here. There really is no excuse for the lack of inspections, but how can the local Co. be in service if they'd have to be decontaminated prior to responding to an alarm during a BI period?

A Chief never has to "go to war" with a fireman. This is not a democracy, it's a para-military organization. You do what you are ORDERED to do. As long as the chief is not breaking the law or a labor contract, YOU DO WHAT YOU'RE ARE TOLD AND YOU DON'T GET TO ASK QUESTIONS.

It's a beautiful helmet, but it belongs on a mantel. This is his profession and he has to abide by the uniform code. Firemen where black helmets, Chiefs, white. That is a far more blatant violation of the rules than a sticker. I don't even think we should be talking about codes in regard to the flag. It doesn't even need to get to that. That is just pushing the rules too far and the Fire Chief is 100% correct in ordering it not to be used.

I have a Japanese car, made in Japan. Why? Because it's a great car at a fair price who's manufacturer has a track record of terrific reliability. American cars have not kept up AT ALL and some are flat out crap. A few models are starting to come around now, but it's a little too late. They made their big bucks selling gas guzzling SUV's only to suffer when gas went through the roof. They ran that company poorly and now they want to get a free-o handout so they can stay in business? The flip-side is, they have a lot of employees who's fault is is NOT. I suppose it's hard to imagine leaving all of them out in the cold, not to mention the drain that would put on the Fed. Gov't. Tough problem.......

Apparatus is not a huge cost. I really doesn't have to be. It's half a million dollars bonded and paid for over many many years.

Nah, TMFD's L19 is a SUPER short wheelbase, single axle 100ft. ladder. That thing is just like VMFD L21, only 30 years later. I heard that VMFD was looking at a Tower Ladder to replace the old one. What's the word?
