  1. They are seagraves and the front end looks JUST like the recent engines. It is the same Aereialscope that's been used on the last few orders.
  2. Stupid....stupid stupid. In my short few years in the FDNY I've been on many false ERS boxes and I've been on 2 or 3 that ended up being a 10-75 or better. It's a bad ratio, but we didn't get any second sources for those runs. Big deal, we go on a few no contact ERS boxes, but they're a redundant resource for a mere 2.5 million a year. Pennies in the grand scheme. Tell mayor Mike to come on out to one of the "finer" neighborhoods in his fair city and tell everyone it's okay 'cause they all have cell phones.... ...yeah right....
  3. Exactly! This actually happened a couple of weeks ago(took some time to make it here). Pretty serious though, however, no one was too badly hurt and that's what counts. Who knows? Perhaps R-2 was taking the turn and was cut off and the RCC jerked the wheel and hit that steel pylon. All said and done this is just one more example of how dangerous emergency response is and how careful you have to be. AND no matter how careful you may be, accidents happen anyway. That's the breaks. Good thing no one was hurt.
  4. Saw that, very interesting. If you think about the materials quality and layout of such a building....it would make a fantastic home. Now, this would be an even better story if he had bought the place after FP 2 was MOVED to a new quarters or something....not closed.
  5. I'd like to think that in this day and age, that's not possible. Also...you would need a great deal more civil unrest for those conditions to return. We pay such a considerable portion of our taxes to social services, ect. ect. that the quality of life is at a level far above what it was 40 years ago.
  6. This initial budget is brutal.....I hope it's not so terrible when it comes to fruition. I'd bet that the 16 companies that were funded by the city council last year will continue to be funded this year. He MIGHT get the 4 that he added to the budget this year. Brooklyn has about 60 engine companies (and needs them all), so they're the easiest place to cut. Stupid, but that's how they do things. The Bronx stands to loose at least one and I'd bed that 4 engine could be in the line of fire as well. Remember, 20 companies means 20 city council districts and community boards. 20 council members opposed to the budget hurts his chance of getting it passed. This is the first strike and we'll see what actually comes out at the end. As for the 5th man.....that a negotiable item and I hope I don't eat my words, but I'd like to think that it's OFF the table and we won't be giving that up.
  7. Ya need a sharp knife to split hairs.
  8. ugh.....another fast food rip off of all the authentic cuisine that Port Chester has to offer. seriously, some of the best south american food in the county can be found in P.C. LOOK!!! Stop patronizing corporate crap...dig a little deeper and you'll get the real mccoy.
  9. I too had heard that the FPNY was going to return in some form. It's a shame that it's been disbanded. I remember seeing the patroleos around their Station 1. Small investment for a lot of savings.
  10. Funny story.... The shops has had to cut down the height of each box and remount the lid, as it was too high and didn't fit in many firehouses. More importantly, note the black wire and little white disk mounted at the front edge of the box in the picture. That's the GPS locator. Big brother (or uncle sal) is watching....
  11. Rumor's on the street about a new Chief of Dept. are; Edward Kilduff - A.C. Brooklyn Borough Commander Richard Tobin - A.C. Chief of Fire Prevention Thomas Galvin - A.C. Chief of Training Robert Sweeney - Chief of Operations The latter two are rumored to have been tapped, but are not interested in taking the position. As for Chief Cassano and Fire/EMS integration. This is a bad thing, both for Fire and EMS. These are two separate jobs with separate needs and they shouldn't be combined, not at all. The only advantage it serves is to the city's bottom line and it's at expense of service.
  12. All in all, this was probobly the best decision.....lets hope he doesn't forget where he came from.
  13. To play devil's advocate for just ONE sec. (Quickly, because I find myself liking the merits of aluminum) Part of the reason that there have been more steel ladder failures is simple. They've been around a lot longer and there are many many more of them in service.
  14. Yeah.....if your aerial fails because it was heated to 1220 deg. F, I would call that user error. Not that it would matter, because I'm sure the poor operator would be cooked long before the bucket hits the ground. That said, my opinion on Sutphen has nothing to do with the aerial material. I just think they're poorly designed and laid out. Not so great in terms of function. They look pretty though....
  15. I stand corrected! Good deal, very interesting.....I'm going to have to look closer next time I'm detailed out to an Elevator Company!
  16. The whole boom is steel, to the best of my knowledge. As for that E-One, thanks for the info on the tip load. So taking these things into consideration (added size of aluminu, vs. added weight for steel) what would you buy and WHY?
  17. We use Aerielscopes and steel sticks. That being said, I'm somewhat familiar with aluminum tower ladders. I have to admit that the creaking sounds and greater amount of flex can be a little disconcerting. Other than that, what's the draw back? Great safety record and they weigh less. I do have a question though.... An Aerielscope has a 1,000 lb. bucket capacity. Does anyone make an aluminum TL with a comparable bucket capacity?
  18. Haha, ZING. Very good, very good.....
  19. That would involve the truck "doing" something
  20. This is the first thing that should be addressed with a new product from any manufacturer. Who REALLY cares what it looks like. I mean, we all want to role around in something decent looking, but that should sit at the end of the list. Function and reliability should TOP the list and after that and several other issues, we can discuss how it looks. That said, it looks to have a more manageable profile in terms of overall vehicle height and the bucket seems MUCH better with the angled access doors.
  21. Word from the shops is, "there will be clearance issues in some firehouses".
  22. This county is SCREAMING for consolidation. There are 50 some odd fire departments. How many different 911 answering points? Even if you simply consolidated all of the small city and village fire departments into a town wide department. You've got a major savings there. Career staff would be better utilized, so would volunteer staff. There would need to be FAR fewer apparatus as well! There should be about a dozen departments in this county. Yonkers, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, White Plains and one for every town....IMHO
  23. Yes, a truck like that is needed for the battalions. The chief and his driver ride in front and they usually stow their bunker gear in the back. The storage area has to hold a mask for both of them as well as lights and small equiptment (saw blades, spare SCBA, meters, ect) that they drop off to each company in the battalion. Items that come from MSU or the Tool Room are delivered to each battalion and they distribute them to each company. As for EMS, I don't know.
  24. Interesting.... The pull out shelving looks nice. At least there will be space more easily organized by the chief's aid. Why a pick-up? I know the Excursion is no longer available, by what about the Suburban? Anyone know the details of the why the choice was made?
