Thanks for passing along the info without divulging too much. When you say "fair" do you mean that it is still an accurate and decisive way to weed out a candidate who put in no effort? The last thing I, or any of my co-workers, want to see is the job we worked for given away for nothing. Candidates, please keep us in the loop. Thanks.

So, has anyone been to take the exam yet? Let us know.
-
I'm with you....I was there with 10 guys from my house. I thought the turn-out would have been better!

As I understand it, the testing will begin tomorrow. Here is the PSI web portal: http://fdny.psiexams.com It seems to have some information regarding content, ect. Give it a look over if you're taking the exam over the next few weeks. Remember, this test is everything. Sleep early the night before, stay hydrated and don't drink too much coffee that morning. You want to be alert but calm and relaxed. Be patient and take your time. So what if it takes 4 hours. It's 4 hours for a lifetime career and it's more than worth it's weight! Good luck! I hope everyone who sees fit to work hard and push themselves to do well will make it to The Rock and out the other side! Rebirth as you might say

I've seen the EMS M.D. out a few times for very serious injuries as well. Jumper down on pavement who's still alive....ect.

The Providence and Worchester (Which used to make regular runs through NY on the New Haven Line) used a Slug quite often. It adds tractive effort, as was said before. A rare sight, nice find.

Would you do everyone a favor and post whatever you have here on this site? Perhaps a scan if possible.

Listen, this is just blustering and good stuff for the papers to print. This is the first OUTLANDISH shot fired in a long war. This will be in court for years to come. There is no way that the city is going to pay out like that, nor are they going to allow this kind of precedent to be set. All that has happened is that one lunatic judge with an agenda has put his personal stamp on this case. It's going to be appealed and then appealed again and you may very well see this case dragged all the way to the Supreme Court of the U.s. for review. If you're trying to get on the job, try not to worry about this stuff. It doesn't REALLY effect you or the chances you have on this next test. Just shoot for a top notch score and get yourself through the academy and onto this job. After you've done all that you can focus on keeping the integrity of this job for the future. There are plenty of us here who are looking at preserving it for the future, be it with Merit Matters or Pension issues this Tuesday in Albany. If you're a test candidate, take the exam and worry about doing well and staying in shape. You'll have a long career of getting into this job in every facet should you do well on this month's test.

Correct. You may take the exam at 17.5 years, but you must be 21 at the date of appointment. If your number is called before you turn 21, you just stay at the top of the pile for the next class, or whenever. Taking the test young is the way to go. The age exceptions are for anyone who took test 6019 and as since aged out. They've been given to the age of 35. Also, there are exceptions to the age limit for military personnel.

I believe that. To be honest, I don't really know ALL that much about some of those county systems. It just seems like a decent model to have a career/volunteer system arranged that way. First condense departments to eliminate redundancy in buildings and apparatus. Allow a larger pool of volunteers to respond to a larger number of runs over a bigger response area. There are plenty of dedicated guys who want to go to more stuff, let'em. Then, place career staffed rigs sporadically throughout, more heavily concentrated in the areas with the highest run volume. Like I said earlier, there is still room in the county for some cities to remain autonomous due to size, ect..

Give or take 100 years Just kidding, aside from the typo, this is correct. "Our Firemen" is a pretty good book about the pre-FDNY NYC fire service. It's really long, not a quick read. More something you pick-up and put down from time to time.

No matter the area you work in, Fire/EMS/Police often deals with the worst of the worst nonsense. It's easy to forget that those who we deal with often are not representative of a neighborhood or community as a whole AND regardless of someones personal situation, we have to provide them with top-notch service. The way we blow off steam in and joke among ourselves is a defense mechanism for dealing with tough/frustrating things on a day to day basis. It serves a real purpose, but that doesn't make it appropriate for any kind of broadcast. We see things that most do not and that gives us a different view. We all know the person with a "tummy ache" who calls at 3am saying the pain started three days before. How about the drunk who stumbles home from the bar and pulls every pull box on his way home in the middle of the night. We can ease our frustrations with humor as long as that humor is contained to colleagues. Any conversation or occurrence at work should never be discussed or broadcast on any social media outlet. You don't know who's reading what or who's privy to what information. Perhaps a legal issue developes surrounding an issue you dealt with at work. Do you really want to be called to court to discuss something you posted about on a silly sight like Facebook? "Loose Lips Sink Ships".....it's a good motto to remember. We all would be served to remember that line.

Sh!t, you're right.....better dust of the "C" stencil!! I have a feeling my index finger will be red by the end of my next tour... Seriously though....the county wide system (perhaps omitting a couple of cities in the Westchester case) would provide terrific service and at a cut rate to the taxpayer. Cut down on apparatus and firehouses. Consolidate Volunteer companies in fewer and the most centrally located firehouses and then add some career staffed companies strategically throughout the county. Look at some of the counties around Baltimore and D.C., seems to be a decent model....
-
I couldn't agree more. I have a very diverse firehouse and not ONE member supports the actions of the Vulcan society. or any race based quota system.
-
No one knows....but I'm sure that they would have treated them with the same disdain they treat everyone else who isn't them. Also, remember that according to this crazy judge, only Blacks and Latinos qualify as minorities (maybe Transgender people too). Asians are not part of this definition of minority. Maybe that's because they probably have a 100% passing rate! I wish I could just rewrite definitions too....stupid Garaufis...
-
100%! However, lets all stop using the word "reverse". Discrimination is discrimination, and that's that. If the Emerald Society held prep classes and held all the black applicants at the door, you'd have every news agency in the country camped outside with a mic in Al Sharpton's face.
-
Well, unfortunately, the written is the major deciding factor. The physical is now Pass/Fail and it's a breeze (The CPAT). There is no interview.
-
Terrific, thanks. Chief Mannix will definitely want it.
-
Oh good. So will they be taking in runs in Co-Op city as well. I mean, they've got a jet ski for runs to Orchard Beach, why not drop an engine into Co-Op city. They're both in the general vicinity of Clason Point.
-
This is possible. To play devils advocate, they may have paid a fee to use the space, just as many church groups had prior to the recent ban on religious activities in public schools. On another note, Chief Mannix appeared briefly on Channel 2 today. It's nice to see the story being covered thoroughly and it does appear that white applicants who paid in advance were turned away. This was not the case in two prior prep courses, only last night's. According to the news, the Vulcan's had no comment and the FDNY is investigating. Who know's where that will lead....
-
Do not do it man. The job needs guys who'll put in the effort and if you DO, you'll get the job.
-
The Vulcan Society IS Racism in the FDNY. This is a group with one agenda and they do not care about how they achieve their goal. Every day they operate is another day they do damage to the FDNY, the services it renders and the lives of New York City residents.
-
Well, you are correct. This whole situation keeps me up at night and it drives me to keep very active with Merit Matters and to push it's right-sided agenda whenever possible. Previous test prep sessions held by the Vulcan's were attended by all races without serious incident. The events that occurred last night are disturbing and deserve some serious investigation. However, I'm trying to keep the focus on the facts here. We don't really know what happened last night. Lets see what comes out of it, but until then, I'd like to hear what was covered. The next 5 weeks are pivotal in the futures of all the hopefulls taking this exam. It's more important that we keep everyone's focus on the material and not politics. We can address that later. The point is, I want to bring the discussion back to what's most important at this moment and that's being prepared for the exam, not getting caught up in the whirlwind. Those who don't have a test to prepare for need to do the work to find out what happened.
-
Obviously there is a lot of blustering with regard to this issue. All that aside, how was the test prep material. Perhaps someone who was inside could shed some light on what was covered.

I grabbed this info from another post, but it deserves it's own thread. The upcoming FDNY exam is a first of it's kind for the NYC F.D. It will be administered over several weeks and is taken on a computer. Any previous FDNY exam books will not have specific information regarding this new exam style. Some have recommended studying the LAFD guides as the same company who devised their entrance exam came up with this most recent FDNY exam. Below are the dates, times and locations of prep courses being offered by the Vulcan Society. The Vulcan Society had prep courses that were more accurate than the city's own prior to the last exam in 2007. It stands to reason that they'll have very accurate and thorough prep courses this time as well. If you'd like to be prepared, I'd recommend attending on one of the following dates. Class schedules and locations are as follows: Brooklyn M.S. 35 272 MacDonough St. on the corner of Lewis Ave (A/C at Utica Ave) Lesson Plan A Monday, February 27 th – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 1 st – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3 rd – 11:00 a.m. Lesson Plan B Monday, March 5 th – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 8 th – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10 th – 11:00 a.m. Manhattan Taino Towers (Gym) 240 E. 123rd St. near 2nd Avenue (4/5/6 to 125th St.) Lesson Plan A Tuesday, February 28 th – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 29 th – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3 rd – 11:00 a.m. Lesson Plan B Monday, March 5 th – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 th – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10 th – 11:00 a.m. Queens M.S. 72 133-25 Guy R. Brewer Blvd Rochdale Village Lesson Plan A Wednesday, February 29 th – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 1 st – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3 rd – 11:00 a.m. Lesson Plan B Tuesday, March 6 th – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 8 th – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10 th – 11:00 a.m. Staten Island I.S. 49 101 Warren St. between Hill St. & Laurel Ave Lesson Plan A Tuesday, February 28 th – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3 rd – 11:00 a.m. Lesson Plan B Wednesday, March 7 th – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10 th – 11:00 a.m. These prep courses are free and reportedly open to all. What are they going to do? Stop you from attending because of the color of your skin. I can't imagine that! Be prepared!! Study hard and take advantage of any leg-up you can and that might very well include this prep course. Any time that you put in now will seem like a drop in the bucket. There isn't anything that isn't worth doing in preparing for this test. I took the exam 10 years ago....time flies... GOOD LUCK.
