I've considered working for FDNY*EMS, but those privates always look allot sweeter. $24/hr as an EMT, ill take that any day of the week.

Thanks for the info Seth. I figured it had been around for a while but some of the latter pages do seem to have been updated in recent months/years(?). The interesting thing is, dont many of the Cali FDs run ALS Engine Companies? If im not mistaken, thats part of the strategic plan for the FDNY.

Aren't Fire Districts barred from charging for services rendered? The biggest issue, as i see it, is there are so many different types of fire departments here (at least in Westchester/Putnam/Dutchess).

The FDNY is a participating member in the program, along with a handful of counties in NY. Depending on how this comes down the line, if it ever comes down the line, it would be the state's responsibility to determine how it should be used. I imagine that they will set a minimum call volume for agencies looking to participate which would exempt many from participating.

EMTs and Paramedics are not just ambulance drivers. We are public safety professionals who put up with less parity and lower pay than many people think. Likewise, competent EMT-Bs are a valuable resource in the paramedic-happy environment we live in. With that said, when it comes time to create that budge don't forget that we not only need the proper equipment, but we also need to put food on the table and pay for a roof over our heads.

Curious to see if the state has any plans of implementing this state wide. What are the training requirements per year? Are they CME based or are you expected to attend more formal EMT/Paramedic academic and practical refreshers? Has the program proven beneficial as of yet? Has this program lead to any talk of issuing a license rather than a certification?

Very well said, couldn't agree more.

Saw this over at http://www.johntkazyik.com I've been told that this guy is a strong friend of Fire, Police and EMS.

Can't speak to the specific model you mention, but one of my agencies just began purchasing Chevy's w/ a duramax diesel. Layout of the cab is a bit different in a few respects, you sit a bit differently in the drivers seat, but all-in-all i think the Chevy's are great. They are very quiet and have a real set of balls. As far as maintenance, i haven't heard the mechanics complain. Thus far they have held up to the abuse pretty well. Hope that helps just a little.

Depending on where your moving in the state, you could look into Arlington Fire Rescue and Lagrange Fire Rescue in Dutchess County. They are both combination departments that have firefighter/paramedics and EMTs that staff a paramedic flycar as well as ambulances in addition to fire apparatus. Peekskill FD is also a combination Dept. who runs Paramedic fly cars, other members can give you the particulars on that. Good luck and welcome to the Empire State!

Don't you have midterms to study for bro?! Just bustin' chops, thanks for the comedic relief.

Laugh it up Ole, laugh it up.

Wouldn't it be "City 911, Station 2 is 10-5" or "City 911 Medic (insert unit # here) is 10-5 with the engine"

I honestly think people need to take the time to read through the 17 page bill. You will notice that there is no provision for the federal government to shut down, absolve or absorb volunteer fire departments. I really think people need to quit the inflammatory language, read the bill and have an intelligent and informed discussion.

Unlikely.

Duh, Level 1 is the bestest!

Happy, safe and fun birthday!

There really are more important things at hand than a medical institution using animals for educational purposes. I'm sure every college that has a science program utilizes lab mice for testing purposes, high schools dissect cats, dogs, and various farm animal parts, I've even heard of paramedic courses having their candidates intubating cats to practice peds skills. Considering the enormity of things we face as a nation from national security to health care, i think the enthusiasm would be better placed elsewhere. As a side bar, i am an animal lover and owner of 11+ years.

It's all part of growing up, it'll pass not to worry.

SUNY WCC has an evening class during this fall semester. Give the school a call. In a perfect world you should be 18 by the day of the state written exam. Additional questions and more informed responses could be answered by the Chair of the WCC EMS Program. Best of luck.

What are the first two things you said before you began each of your practical scenarios ? BSI and scene safety. Patient care takes a backseat if a scene is dangerous. I'm not here to be a hero, im here to do a job but if i go down who's going to do that job? I don't need to get in the middle of gang violence, domestic assaults, shootings, stabbings. I really could care less why bob shot jim or why john took a bat to Bill's leg - i only want to get in and do what i can to help jim or bill. You have to figure 9 out of 10 drunks or whoever don't call 911 themselves, you've got the passersby who calls b/c they are out cold in their driveway, on the sidewalk or in the street. Trust me, take the same guy to the ER a few dozen times for the same self inflicted crap and itll frustrate the hell outta you I've been fortunate i haven't been in too many shady situations, most people don't mind EMS where i work. However, i think more generally, people see EMS as part of the establishment. We have similar uniforms and we could be easily mistaken for Police. Additionally, they know that Fire and EMS both work pretty closely with PD so anything they do or say will get back to the police eventually. But, god forbid they have a hole the size of a coffee can in their chest, they'll be crying for EMS. Don't be discouraged. It's just life bro. If your willing and can afford to deal with that for 9 bucks/hour then by all means do it!

More or less pretty much the case everywhere. In fact i had a regular intox throw a swing at me the other day. The worst thing about this type of crap, is that we bust our asses for the same people over and over and they just end up drunk to the point of unconsciousness in the street 9 hours later after they get discharged. At what point do you draw the line? Part of me feels that, hell if they want to do this to themselves thats their business and don't bother me. Lord knows i don't want herpagonasyphlAIDs or whatever these people have floating around them if they go to bite me or try to stab me with a sharp. About the only defense i have is staging away which can cause problems or knocking the guy out with a D-Tank (which probably isn't the best move). Maybe this type of crap is better left to police, after all they've got the firepower - lethal and less lethal - but, there are allot more pressing law enforcement matters happening too.

I'm pretty sure i heard Arlington go out for a "fire near a structure" on Monday night which was later reported to be a dumpster fire next to a residence.
