  1. And i want to let it be known that your not even considering the fact that these guys were loaded up with liquor and already made references to possessing and or utilizing a firearm. Couple that with their failure to comply with the detective's orders and your asking to get shot. This wasn't some skell it was the god damn Police, fight or flight is a non issue. They should have stopped.
  2. Putnam does like 4,000 EMS calls a year. So, Chris is right, a 90 day trial may yield more realistic data. After all remember what happened the day the contract switched hands? Every agency go out at first or second dispatch. Within 2 weeks things were back to normal. And what's the point with the comment on the nursing home jobs? Sometimes its BS sometimes its not, whats your point? They are still residents and it's still a job thats got to get covered.
  3. Intercepting is a judgment call on behalf of the BLS crew. If whoever was calling the shots couldn't realize that waiting ~60 seconds for ALS to get on board was the proper choice what makes you think they would have bothered to request an intercept?
  4. This is the way it should have been since day one, 4 medic fly cars and 2 or 3 BLS trucks but my understanding is that would have been political suicide... Chris, if anyone is paying for the service it's probably the County...or maybe Empire is swallowing the cost for the 30 days in anticipation of adding this onto the contract?
  5. So, the article is correct in the fact that the medics were essentially left at the back step of the truck? If these were senior guys wouldn't they know that with ALS a minute out and a 10 minute trek to the ER having those medics on board was vital? Was this the Lts call? Doesn't really add up to me
  6. Glad to see the Detectives got acquitted, but they aren't out of the woods just yet. You can be sure they will face some sort of civil litigation and god only knows what the NYPD will do to them...
  7. From what i saw when i was over at the Ulster fire a lot of people liked wearing jeans, t-shirts and a combination of sneakers and boots. I saw other people wearing bunker pants and t-shirts. Not exactly sure how much of that is kosher...but thats what i saw
  8. According to the way the article was written, it sounds like the FDNY BLS unit asked for the time out on the ALS, and apparently it was "a minute." So, i can only assume that the OLM unit knew what was going on. It sounds as though, again from the article, that the Lt rode in with the BLS crew.
  9. Tragic situation. Appears as though ALS interventions may have made a difference considering the time out on 15V. Was the Lt a conditions boss? If so the two encounters i had with them they were sticklers on following protocol to the "t". This is definitely not going to forward the position of EMS generally, and especially not in the FDNY. Sad, sad day.
  10. Clearly an unfortunate and dangerous situation, but i cant say i'm surprised. This type of "old boys club" crap is most often the rule rather than the exception.
  11. Things were running pretty well when i was up there Saturday as far as accountability. Everyone checked in and checked out, records were kept and consistently updated. The ulster county mobile command truck was up there as well coordinating communications. The sentiment that the topic starter quotes was flying around the staging area a bit. I heard a few people commenting on it. But, my understanding was that they were ending operations at dusk. Is that really a bad idea? I mean, the terrain is fairly rugged and forest fires are not exactly commonplace in this area. This isn't California and we aren't dealing with seasoned wildfire firefighters who fight this stuff all year around. From a sheer safety standpoint it seems like the right choice was made.
  12. Thanks for letting us know how we can donate.
  13. Wanted to bump this up because it's coming up in the next few weeks. Again, there is going to be some great bands, great prizes and t-shirts. Most importantly it's going to help out 2 PFD families. If you can't attend to the event, consider donating th the 596's Good and Welfare fund.
  14. It's a general request by Ulster County for manpower to fight a brush fire in a state park, the command post is in New Paltz. You're best bet is to have someone contact your respective dispatching center to inquire as to if help has been requested from your county.
  15. Just curious, did the shift commander/ officer in charge ask direct incoming units to downgrade their response?
  16. Best wishes to two MOS involved. As a sidebar, i find it ironic that there are only 5 replies to this thread. I hate to make comparisons, but if this were an on duty FF or PO this would be 2 pages long and if it wasn't someone would have started a topic about why everyone should post their best wishes. One would think that a public safety community like this would have the compassion/decency to reach across affiliation lines and do the right thing....looks like i was wrong...
  17. Take it easy there buffy. Question, does she pack any 3/4 inch?
  18. Are you sure about that information? They took away abdominal thrusts for unconscious choking because of fear of internal trauma. I would think that chest compressions, would be far more effective in terms of circulating blood than pounding on someones abdomen, it just doesn't make any sense to me.
  19. As long as fire departments and ambulance corps go 3 and 4 and 5 dispatches and response times are upwards of 15 minutes there will have to be a discussion of alternatives. And that will always include weighing the pros and cons of paid/combination departments/agencies and their all volunteer counterparts. In my eyes, it would defeat the purpose of this very forum if we didn't discuss the issue when applicable. When the issue has to be discussed, it needs to be frank, respectful (that doesn't mean sugarcoating the facts) and thoughtful by all.
  20. Its California, did you REALLY expect any different?
  21. RIP. Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of the Officer as well as the Norwalk PD.
  22. Actually, I've heard two different stories: The first is that when EMS first got up and running things were so busy that units were picking up additional patients on the way to the hospital. So, in essence, they were very much like a bus service. The other story I've heard is that some of the first contracts to build ambulances went to Grumman. Apparently at one point Grumman built the NYC transit buses...hence the term.
