There are 6 Haz-Mat Squads in Southern Westchester comprised of 9 career fire departments. Squad 1 - Yonkers Squad 2 - New Rochelle Squad 3 - Mount Vernon Squad 4 - White Plains Squad 5 -Eastchester/Scarsdale Squad 6 - Fairview/Greenville/Hartsdale Each Sqaud runs with a donated mini Bee-Line bus and an 18' trailer. I believe all members are trained to the Haz-Mat Technician level.

It was Engine 6 (before county numbering existed). If I remember correctly, Church St had 1 Eng. & 1 Lad., Hugenot St. Had 1 Eng., Station 2 & 3 were 1 & 1, Station 4 had 1 Engine and the North Ave. house housed Engine 6. When Station 1 was built, Chruch St & Hugenot St. house closed. Also for a while a 2nd engine ran out of Station 1 as Engine 6, nicknamed The Flying Squad because they responded on all box alarms in New Rochelle. They were also the first company in New Rochelle to have SCBA's. There was a picture of it a while back on the front page under "Classic New Rochelle Apparatus".
-
That used to be home to Engine Co. 6 back in the day. Also, I was told that the chuch across the street was a police station at one point. As a side note, there also used to be firehouses on Chuch St. (now a church) and Union Ave. x Second St. (now a deli I believe). As well as one on Huganot St. where New Roc City is now.

If you want to ride on the back of a truck become a garbage man - otherwise stay in the cab where you belong.
-
Actually, in case you haven't noticed it seems that recently, anytime a career fireifghter even mentions anything related to volunteer firefighters there's an uproar. Just look at some of the responses so far (yours included). I'm guessing you probably wouldn't have had a problem if my last post was blamming career firefighters for any tension.............
-
Maybe it's just me, but it seems that the majority of the tension comes from volunteers who fear that their volunteer department will be replaced with a career one. There are plenty of departments in Westchester that should have gone fully paid or at least combination years ago but due to the fear of change it hasn't happened.
-
Great job by all who worked on this. Nice tribute to both FF Billy Malone of Fairview FD & FF Santo Giampapa of Greenville FD who passed away this year as well.
-
As a current student at the University of New Haven, I would definitely recommend it's Fire Science program. UNH offers concentrations in Fire/Arson Investigation, Fire Dept. Administration & Fire Protection Engineering. As far as a major that will help with advancement, I would look into either Fire Administration, Public Administration or Business Administration.

The old Engine 6 is located on North Ave. just south of Wilmot Rd., where North Ave. turns to Mill Rd. It is now a private residence. The Church St. firehouse is about 2-3 buildings in from Main St. opposite the parking garage. It is now used as a French Baptist church.

Also, just to add, the Town of Greenburgh had a Tech. Rescue Team which is made up of members of the Greenbugh Police & Fire Departments.
-
Does this team have any equipment or apparatus. What are the plans for how they will repond to an incident. Also, aside from the drills held at the training center, what other training (i.e.: NYS courses for Trench Collapse, Structural Collpase and Confined Space Rescue) is required to be a member?
-
Why don't you hold a drill with several other departments this way you can "get to know other people" while at the same time you are training. I can honestly say that I have never been to a parade nor do I have any plans to. I have nothing against anyone who does, I just don't have any interest. As I said before if your pride comes from a trophy your in the wrong place. Oh and by the way, I think your taxpayers would rather know that you are training and providing them with the best possible level of fire protection than know that you won the best engine catagory at a parade.
-
I can't belive you would think that you can have too much training. You really need to rethink why you joined the fire service. Alot of firefighters were killed or severly injured because they were in a situation that they were not properly trained to handle. Parades are great if your into it but they don't make you any better as a firefighter. Even if you don't go on alot of runs, you need to be prepared for when you do get called. Also, your morale should come from the service you provide your taxpayers, not how many trophies are in your display case.

While you may not read about firefighters dying because they fell off their truck on a daily basis, one death or injury is too many. Did you already forget about the FDNY firefighter who almost died because he fell off a moving truck a year ago? As far as trophys go, I'd be alot more concerned with the safety of me and my fellow firefighters than whats in my departments trophy case. By the way try telling OSHA you can "do what you want" and I'm pretty sure they won't care how many trophys you won. While its true accidents can and will happen, they can also be prevented. Hopefully the rest of your department does not share that same attitude that you do.

Just to add to what billfitz posted: The Squad 6 trailer is stationed at Greenville FD H/Q. It is currently towed by R29. Thanks to the Yonkers FD comissioner and chiefs as well as all who worked on it for their hard work that went into putting the trailer together and also those who helped secure the funding for it.

http://www.ci.richmond.va.us/departments/f...ions/quint.aspx This is the website for the Richmond, VA Fire Department. It explains how they swithced to only running quints and how it allows them to have more manpower on calls and also increase their response capabilities. I don't know how well it actually works but its interesting to see the change in numbers for them by running all quints.

Congratulations to both Capt. Kerr and Joe. I've known both of these guys pretty much since I was born. It will be weird around GFD without you guys. Enjoy your retirement!!!!!
