  1. But in other areas I know of, DPW workers cover a significant amount of the call volume during the day. Elmsford and North Salem come to mind. Heck, in Elmsford, the fire department is dispatched on the DPW channel! :-k
  2. There has been some mumbling out of Dutchess/Putnam about Alamo starting up a helicopter with a Sikorsky already purchased. No verification made. Should be interesting if they are doing that, considering they can't handle what they have already.
  3. Okay. In an effort to liven up discussion here in the training forum and to make you think a little, I want to introduce a new concept to the forum (appologies if someone else thought of this earlier and mentioned it, I don't recall). We can call it the Problem of the Month. This one came to me while sitting in a PHTLS class this past weekend in Westport, CT. You are called to the scene of a hunting accident. It is in the middle of bow hunting season and someone has been accidentally shot with an aluminum rod arrow. You arrive to see the man's hunting buddies running around frantic, not sure what to do.They just look at you and yell "HELP HIM". You approach the man to find him unconscious on the ground, not breathing (apneic) and pulseless. There is an aluminum arrow sticking out of the center of his chest. Exposing the chest reveals the arrow has penetrated the center of chest, right in the spot where you would normally place your hands to do CPR. His friends say the incident happened 5 minutes before they called, about 11 minutes ago. What do you do now? (A cop is there with you and secures the scene.) [My focus is on the obstruction and how do you do a resusitation in this case. Don't get off on a tanget about how you think one of his buddies shot him on purpose, etc etc]

  6. Now that I am able to see the video, I can see that the van that was struck had the right of way with the green light. Can we say lawsuit?
  7. My question is: who had the right of way? The article almost implies that the truck was speeding through red lights.
  8. Yup. Very beneficial in determining if seatbelts were worn, if the driver was distracted, etc.
  9. We always hear from the higher ups on all this crap. What do the guys out on the street think? anyone?
  10. Now if only EMS training could catch up to the fire training. II'm not expecting too much am I?
  11. Could someone explain, for the uninitiated, how a box system works?
  12. Just checked the topographical maps on Topozone. Turkey Mountain is about 800 feet. Round Top is about 740 feet. Bailey Mountain in Mountain Lakes Camp definatly takes the cake at 980+ feet. Nobody better get hurt up there on a Thursday. I'd be dead before I got halfway up. :->
  13. It won't mention names, but while working the other night, we drove by a local fire house. The guys were all hanging out in the front. No problem, except that some were sitting there holding beer bottles. Does this worry anyone other than me? If a call had come in, would they have done the right thing and not gone on the call? (I doubt it). Also, what does the public think when they drive by (and this is on a major road) and see the people who could potentially be comming to rescue them, sucking down bottles of suds. I have nothing against being social, hanging out after a long day or a rough call, and having a few beers with your buds, but the problem is we need to use our heads. Remember what the public thinks us about IS important. Do you want them to see you as the heros in white/blue/red/etc or a bunch of drunks? And for the love of god, respect the one ounce one hour "rule". It might just save your neck from an incident like the above. Some corps I have been in go a step further and say you can't be on duty for 8 hours after consuming any amount of alcohol. Smart move if you ask me.
  14. I can help you with the "DriveCam" as they are called. We are looking into deploying them into some vehicles at WEMS as well. They are a self contained video (and I believe audio is also an option) recording system with wide angle lenses that record the front of the vehicle and the inside of the drivers cabin, and are set off either by impact, sudden braking, or other sensible action that can be set by the owner. The recording can also be triggered by the driver. It can be invaluble in an accident as it can work for or against the driver (hopefully for) in the event of a collision and can cut down on the cost of both litigation and insurance claims. These can also cut down on vehicle maintainence costs, because if they are triggered, you can pull the recording and determine if the driver was braking too hard, driving too fast, etc. This can cut down on frequency of brake replacement, gas usage, etc. For more information: http://www.drivecam.com/
