  1. From the RPS Website. This applies now more than ever since John leaves behind three young children who will need our help now more than ever. http://www.rocklandparamedics.org/10-13.html
  2. Woa. This was a bit sudden. I knew John from my reotations out in Rockland and my first reaction is one of utter shock. He seemed to be well liked and was a very important part of RPS. He will be missed as I doubt anyone would be able to just step in and take his place. RIP Brother.
  3. Anyone know where New York State Museum is located? Is that the one in Albany that was looking to put on the same/similar exibit a year or two ago? Is this the end result of thier search perhaps?
  4. Just did some research, here is an interesting item from a yorktown historical website. Did you know that it used to be home to the Mohegan Fire Dept?
  5. Biggest fire that sticks out in my mind is the Old 1852 Inn at Lexington and Strawberry in Mohegan across from the old Fransiscan HS (now a day care center). I lived on the other side of the woods at the time and heard the sirens but didn't know what was going on. Heard a lot of commotion in the neighborhood and headed outside. Was about 10 or 11 at night, dark out but the entire sky was lit up like someone dropped a bomb on the hill above us. I just grabbed her keys and went. I was an active member of PCVAC at the time and still an EMT so it was probably around 1994 or so. I headed up to find out what was going on. I ended up helping one of the firefighters gor for supplies (I seem to remember it raining out too cause we got a bit wet). I ultimately ended up manning a rescue (ambulance) with the Beumonts (sp?) and just watched this thing go. It was an all wood structure dating back to the mid 1800s so it went up quick. At the time it was an italian restaurant kind of join that wasn't doing so well, so everyone immediatly suspected arson. I don't know what came of that whole case. Thankfully nobody was injured that I know of. Basically ended up being a surround and drown and the entire place was a complete loss. Only thing left standing was the huge industrual size refrigerator.
  6. Just curious: who is actually doing the restoration? Members? or a shop?
  7. Why do you assume that he works for an ambulance company? I saw nothing in his post to indicate this. The problem is there, it happens plain and simple. Putting on the blinders and pretending it doesn't happen because someone wrote down somewhere not to do it, doesn't mean it doesn't still happen. LEts take this to the next level. Ever thing about cross contamination to your pens and clipboards? How many of oyu sit there on a call and write on a PCR with gloved hand on a clipboard and then use that same pen and clipboard later after you just washed your hands to avoid germs that are all over your clipboard? Do you ever clean your pen and clipboard like you clean your hands? Food for thought. :-k
  8. Nextel would probably never allow interconnectivity with thier network for D/Cs simply because it is such a huge selling point. Look how popular it is. Hell, the patent expired on it a year or so ago and others have developed and launched similar services, but how many have taken off? I don't know anybody with a phone from a competitor that uses Direct Connect like service. The only way they would allow others on to thier iDen network is if other services take off and people demand connectivity between services and they are forced by say the FCC to do it. Thats my prediction.
  9. Some people just don't think about it or realize what they are doing. Any good BSI program should address this issue and make people think about it more. If you work a bad MVA and get your hands covered in blood, do you wear those gloves to drive to the LZ/Hospital? I certainly hope not. Then why would you do the same when dealing with a patient with say, the flu? Germs may be less visible than blood, but they are still there and can still hurt you. How manyagencies address the issue of clean zones and dirty zones? Does even know the difference and if so, which areas in your agency are which? And how many people use the bathroom without washing thier hands? I'm guessing a lot since half the people that leave the bathroom I have been in the past walk right from the urinal, past the sink, and out the door. Think about that next time you go to shake someone's hand. What were they shaking earlier?
  10. Are they full time units? I thought they were mainly daytime and staffed by Airport personnel?
  11. Don't throw a party just yet. He's still going to be a NWHC, he's just going to be head of the hosptalist program. For those who might be unfamiliar, A Hospitalist is a doctor who specializes in taking care of patients while they are in the hospital. Kind of like a House Doctor with a snazzy name. The field is growing however and more hospitals (NWHC included) are embracing the specialty and bringing on Hospitalists. Many even have subspecialties....NWHC has several Pediatric hospitalists.
  12. Yeah right. That will happen sometime between now and never. Grayson for President.
  13. Word from John Filingeri at Hudson Valley: Cortlandt Medics is looking to put together an EMT class in the coming months (previous attempts had poor enrollment). Anyone interested please call the CRP office at (914)734-3787.
  14. "Cheeky" and Wife had a boy I believe. I had the name in my nextel but accidentally erased it.
  15. For those of you who didn't know "Cheeky" had his first on Monday morning in the wee hours. =D>
  16. Thats one of many ones. Sure if you want to vent, vent. Put PLEASE, if you have a bad call, and you feel you need to talk to someone, do it. Find anyone. Coworker, friend, clergy, go to counseling, call the CISD team. Whatever it takes. Don't let your ego tell you it's going to be okay, cause maybe it won't be.
  17. Check with Steve Nardozzi at WCC and see if they are giving a daytime class in the Spring. They vary the location, sometimes it's in Ossining sometimes it's at the main campus. Usually Bob Lockwood teaches. Good instructor.
  18. I'm sure there will be. Just a question as to where. Charlie will most likely teach a class at Somers, and usually it's easy to just piggyback the refreshers onto an original class. WCC does refresher classes, but they used to be (dunno if they still are) on Sundays. I'm sure there will be others, just aquestion as to where. Try www.phelpshealth.org to see if there is anything posted there. You can also try the WCDES education site.
  19. Allow me to get winded. :-> I only like HEAR for basic notifications. Especially when I'm not interested in hearing crap back from the hospital (if they don't like what I said they usually just say "10-4, <hospital> clear"). If I need orders i ALWAYS call. I rarely if ever call by HEAR. The only time we've done that recently was on a fatality in Bedford Village when we called M/C by HEAR because the cell phones don't work where we were. It's even come to be the recommendation lately that we call by cell though our dispatch center and have them conference us in to medical control. The reason being, most M/C consoles aren't recorded anymore and an issue arose recently where a doctor litterally told us to go elsewhere, we're all full up, and the president of the hospital had a fit. (o figure). In regards to Phelps, the problem has been two fold for a while. Half of it was the crap radios they had in the ER (which have since been replaced). Half is the geography of the area. Everyone knows you have to go over the hill past Scarboro church to get a good signal to them. Back when I worked in Ossining we had a UHF radio tower on the water tower near the VAC. We could call M/C via the handhelds and get a nice clear signal to the hospital (it was connected via landline). That was cool. I remember doing a code and calling Dr. Kyi for orders from my portable. If only it was always that simple. Course now we have cell phones more often so we usually use them. CT uses the CMED system. But that suffers from the same problem as HEAR. You have to be close to the CMED tower to get a patch. If you are in an outlying area, say, New Cannan and you need to hit Norwalk, it may be tough. ERs need to get used to the idea of people rolling in without a call ahead. Thiey aren't the Outback steakhouse. Sometimes we're just too busy doing stuff to call ahead. Deal with it. Yes, it's nice to have, especially if you are say, White Plains (where they actually measure hospital time by THE MINUTE because they are so busy). Drives me nuts especially when I call ahead and tell them, say, I have an intubated patient and they haven't even called for a vent. HELLO. It's one thing if you are busy but come on people, it takes 5 seconds and is usally done by the secretary/clerk. What i think Westchester County REALLY needs is a central medical control. Give Nicky a nice cushy office at DES and a Playstation. Let him or one of his designates be there 24/7 and EVERYONE calls them for orders. This way the care standard remains the same (No BS from old cronies not wanting to give Lasix cause they don't have a CXR) and a doctor is always available (How many times have you gotten the "Sorry, she's busy with a patient). Can't get a cell signal, no problem. Call 60 and have them patch the doctor over the dispatch channel in a pinch. :blahblah: I'll get off my soapbox now.
  20. US Geological Survey Terraserver http://terraserver-usa.com/default.aspx Here is a shot of WC Airport. Close enough to count the aircraft on the ground. Too bad I can't link to the good pictures. If someone on the ground flipped a coin, you can tell them if it's heads or tails. Everyone wave to Big Brother. http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?t=1&...=22734&z=18&w=1
  21. Yeah...and before that, at Kensico. Thus the Dam/Park reference.
  22. I have an older i1000 and it regularly has problems with signal. I can stand totally still and have a full signal one second and then only one bar the next.....probably a phone issue more than reception but it's annoying.
  23. It's nextel, what do you expect?
  24. Thats the nice thing about a good fundraiser. The food is usually good (who can beat firehouse chili) and well worth the price especially considering the cause. I just with they would bring back the annual chili cookoff at the Dam/Park.
