Listen, regardless of the TYPE of vehicle, when you have lights and sirens from any direction you are supposed to pull to the RIGHT and STOP. Yes, there have been incidents of confusion in the past. I heard of stories where people refused to stop for the oficer in the rig so he called a sector car in to assist. When the secotr car finally got the guy pulled over the guy's response was "but it was an ambulance I didn't think i needed to stop". Needless to say he got a summons for failure to yield as well and the initial violation. Now if a vehicle of questionable authority makes you pull over and acts like it is a traffic stop and you fear for your safety, they you would probably be well within your rights to leave and head to the nearest police station or call 911. If they are legit then 911 can put you in contact with the dispatcher to verify legitimacy. I'm sure there has been confusion in the past as well concerning the authority of DEP and MetroNorth Police. Both have the ability to pull you over and issue traffic violations if they witness such. Regardless of where it happens.

Could you post a link if possible? I'd be interested in reading the feedback over there.

You talking about the VACs? or the voluntaries?
-
Well, i thank you for the compliments. Unfortunatly we have an obligation to our own facilities to meet before we can go branching out and accepting new responsibilities and contracts in areas outside the immediate vicinity of our hospitals. (Holy Run on sentence!)

Uhm, no. If you read the memo, it was specifically stated that it was a direct result of the weather. There was also mention of the strain that the diversions are putting on the various systems, but the weather is predicted to greatly worsen said strain, ergo the 48 hour diversion cancellation.
-
Well, I'm glad we got that straightened out. As for the contracts, I I'd love to see my agency become a little more active up in that particular area, but that won't happen any time soon.

Yeah. Look how much PR the FDs got when they donated that Engine, equipment and chiefs car to Arkansas(?) recently. I forget details but wasn't it a Millwood engine and an older EMS response vehicle for thier chief car and other departments stepped up and equipped the engine with gear? I hear the guys from Arkansas were in tears when they found out.

Stop being so quick to jump to conclusions. With facilities like Springvale and VA Nursing Home, the volume of calls tends to put a strain on local EMS agencies. There SHOULD be a contract in place with a private transport company (I would bet there is too) for a majority of the calls that come out of these facilities. A call from them to 911 should be a rarity and for only severely ill patients. Unfortunatly it's the norm, not the exception. We get called constantly for patients who have been sick and now the MD wants them to go to the ER. But they can't get a decent ETA from the private ambulance so they call us. How do you feel getting out of bed at 3am to do the job of a company that has a contract but can't meet it's end of the deal?
-
You act like it's a constant problem which I don't think it really is. Having been an ER patient twice, I can say that I wasn't stuck waiting forever and a day. We have to face facts that ER censuses (censi? :->) are VERY dynamic. Sometimes you have three nurses per patient, sometimes you have 10 patients per nurse. It's a viscuous see-saw like cycle. Right now we've swung to the side of "hurry up and wait" becuase of the immense volume brought on by this "viral illness" that's been going around. The other problem with ER waits is ignorance about what goes on behind the scenes. It's very easy to criticise from our POV. I've seen a lot of posts from bitchy EMS people about long waits and diversionary cranckiness from ER staff, but I haven't heard one bit of feedback from someone on the other side of the clipboard.

Decided to post this here to remind everyone to drive with utmost caution. Especially in emergency mode. I really feel sorry for the guy, but you do have to wonder how fast he was going to push a car 145 feet down the road.

Who will be the buff that goes and gets the vanity plate "EMTBravo"?
