  1. I used to work at a place in Crompond called JW's Ice Cream Depot. We made all our own ice cream. The best was Eggnog around the holidays.
  2. Tell him to go to Galaxy transportation/American Ambulance in the Bronx. I hear they're hiring.
  3. The voltage part is the most important. Too low and your camera won't work. Too high and your camera could be damaged. The Wh (WattHours) is a gauge of how LONG the bettery will last. An 8.5Wh battery will last about 40% longer than 5.0Wh one.
  4. There's a POINT?
  5. I'd be lying if I said I attended EVERY class. But MOST of the classes I did. In fact, TWICE.
  6. Cross training for EMTs in rescue operations and FFs in basic patient care is always a good idea, especially in areas with a high volume of MVCs for example. I can't tell you how many times I've had the FD turn to me and ask how they should go about getting someone out of a car becuase they fear hurting the guy more. It's not been that many times, but the little I know about extrication has helped. I'd love to take a full on extrication tech class or something similar to learn the ins and outs of the tools and equipment. Anything that can better help me get the job done is a good thing IMHO.
  7. Jim, The strength exhibited by yourself, Gina, and the rest of your family is, to me, beyond legendary. I can't READ your emails without shedding tears. I have no idea how you find the strength to write about it. I can't speak for everyone but I'm sure that the latest news has had a profound effect on a lot of us. When I first heard of Jimmy Boy I wondered what it was, beyond his diagnosis, that made him so special. After a year and a half I now know. I've seen the profound effect JimBoy has had on just about everyone who come to be in his presence. The first time I met JimmyBoy was before he left for Loma Linda. We took him down to WMC after he had a seizure. Going to the hospital seemed so second nature to him that it didn't seem to bother his spirit one bit. Last time I saw him was a different story - he seemed to have no energy left. I think the little guy has more "fight" in him than all of us combined. My thoughts now seem to be a war between hope and fear. Hope that by some miracle, a greater power decides to intervene, curing that which JimmyBoy has fought so hard to overcome. Fear, that no matter what we do, no matter how hard we try, fate seems intent on taking him away from us all. Regardless of the outcome, to us all, he will forever by synonymous with hope.
  8. Bariatric is a PC way of saying overweight/obese patient. 10-13 in NYC means officer down. No idea what it is in Newark as I can't easily find a 10 code list for them.
  9. The most common book used is the Mosby book. Some use the Brady "encyclopedia" books, which are good reference material later onm, but kind of overkill. Best advice: go to ALL the classes, don't slack off, study and you'll do fine. Which class are you taking BTW?
  10. I always had the hots for the pink Power Ranger.
  11. Last I heard you didn't even acknowledge the existence of the STDS. (Throws condoms to the troops).
  12. PF Changs in White Plains. Don't go there and then try to eat regular chinese for AT LEAST a month. They are so good you'll be disappointed with the rest.
  13. When I used to work in Ossining on monday mornings I used to pick up a dozen or so from the place in Arcadian. Nice and fresh with a 1/4 lb of creme cheese. Wonder if they are still there/any good anymore.
  14. So make it the next week. September is a good time to play. Not too hot, not too cold. And hopefully no rain.
  15. I think we're gonna need a hi-res copy to post in the office.
  16. I think EMTBravo should have a monthly online meeting in the chat room that way people can talk in real time and get updates on the status of the forums.
  17. Something like this is a huge undertaking, regardless of the size. I hope you don't try to do it yourself, seek help from others in your school (and NYU) who might be interested in the same thing. Many schools have clubs. Perhaps start small by starting an EMS or Emergency Responder Club to garner support. IF you want to move into the response part of things, look into becoming an BLS First Response agency. Doing the BLS 911 Ambulance thing can be something you work towards in the distant future. Having a large ambition is good, but try not to bite off more than you can chew. You'll find youself struggling sooner than later and it will end up becoming more a headache than a hobby. Most of all, being a student, don't let your ambition to start a BLS agency interfere with your studies. You can always come back later on as an alumnus and work from there.
  18. Yeah, it's better to take action on a situation, have it investigated, and be nothing; than to have it be something and do nothing. You CANNOT be sued (at least not successfully) for libel/slander if you report someone and are wrong. You CAN be sued for negligence if you suspect something and do nothing.
  19. There must be a module available for Invision. We need another impromptu usermeet.
  20. Some people also put under history, medication, allergies "patient denies" just so if later the patient says they take something you can say that earlier they denied any current Rx.
  21. Edit: Note the change in the extension. Westchester EMS is always accepting applications. We especially need dispatchers and paramedics, but EMTs are always in demand. We service the entire Westchester County area with emphasis on our parent hospitals: Phelps, White Plains, Lawrence, and Northern Westchester. Email jobs@westchesterems.org or call Janet Pawlowski at 914-273-5454x223 for more information. Applications and job descriptions (soon to be updated) are available online at westchesterems.org. You can PM me if you have any specific questions.
  22. While the vast majority of the BLS truck calls are transports, there is a certain extent of emergency work. I have no idea what that extent is yet however.

  24. Yeah, show me an allergy that ISN'T medical (except maybe allergies to work). I tend to prefer NKA since it covers the whole spectrum. NKDA implies only that the patient has no DRUG allergies. There are many other things person can be allergic to so be sure to run the gauntlet - drugs, foods, environmental (bee stings, etc), and especially latex. It can also be handy to find out how extensive a person's allergy is to a certain item.
  25. It is if you light it. (Someone git me a match!)
