  1. IT is highly recommended that once the new guidelines are adopted by the DOH, that you take a new certification class to bring you up to speed. To expand on what als said, the science symposium that released the 2005 guidelines came to the consensus that with a 30:2 ratio, there is a greater quantity of circulated oxygenated blood than with the 15:2 ratio. They actually determined that with the 15:2 ratio, we were only beginning to reach a good circulation volume as we hit the later compressions. With 30 compressions it allows us to "Get up to speed" per se, building up a good flow of blood, and hopefully increasing survival rates. We'll also be doing 2 minutes of CPR before using an AED on people with prolonged downtimes. And there will be LARGE changes in the AED energy settings and shock protocols. Your AED sales rep should be in touch with you in the near future about reprogramming of deployed units. And the list goes on. The 2005 guidelines are by far the largest most sweeping set of changes the AHA has ever released. IT WILL take time for people to get certified and up to speed.
  2. Also, for those of you calling the 244-0382 number to inquire about employment, they will just refer you to the corporate office. For those of you unaware, Westchester EMS is part of the Stellaris Health Network. All hiring for WEMS is done by the Stellaris HR person. Her name is Janet, and she's pretty much on the ball. She can be reached at 273-5454 ext 223. She screens all applications and if you meet the requirements, she will call you back to schedule an appointment for an interview. If you never got a call back you either 1) Sent your application to the wrong person or 2) you don't meet the hiring qualifications. Information about employment and benefits can be found at http://www.westchesterems.org/employment.shtml. And like scoot said, the benefits are really second to none. And I'm fairly sure the EMT starting salary is a bit higher than $10.50. I'll find out and let you know.
  3. At the Peekskill Fire last year we had two rigs at scene I believe, with a third in services at the VAC down the street to cover the city. The first in bus parked near the scene but not so close as to get in the way of fire ops. (For those of you there, we were right next to where the Salvation Army canteen setup. The second bus was down the street well out of the way of the 5" lines and all, so that egress was not a problem. The first rig unloaded the stretcher and had it's gear ready to go in case they were needed in a pinch. Obviously at the onset, if any casualties are found during initial search, they'd be put to work treating them. Otherwise, in the absence of initial injuries, they should ideally setup with the FAST team. We then had the rig closed up and the heat blasting. We used this as our rehab for those who needed to get out of the cold and warm up and maybe get some oxygen. I was the ALS unit and was up the hill and out of the way. I wasn't dedicated to the scene (and actually did do a call in the city while the call was going on). Having an ALS unit at a fire standby is not a BAD idea, but dedicated is kind of pointless. Yeah it's good the have ALS there in case something goes bad. But what if something bad happens a mile away? Do I not go? Sorry guys, call another ALS unit and they'll rotate in. I'll be up the road where I'm needed. Rehab is all to often neglected on many fire scenes. At the Peekskill job we kind of winged it. Salvation Army is a great resource for warm/cold fluids and snacks. Ultimately it's up the fire departments to lay out protocols for rest time and rehab. How many have protocols or P&Ps for rehab?
  4. Check this out: http://www.frappr.com/emtbravo Go to the site and join the listing and show everyone where you are. It would be fun to see how widespread the EMTBravo phenomenon really is.
  5. Makes sense. You don't see fire engines standing by at the airport waiting for helos to land now do ya. All you really need is a 100x100 spot and some way to mark it if it need marking. Half these pilots have landed in MUCH worse conditions than your typical LZ. (A lot of them are retired military).
  6. I can't speak for EMTBravo, but I suspect he'd be more than happy if you spread the word. It would be interesting to see where everone on this board is from. We have members spread out all over the place. We even have several from Europe and I recall one guy from Australia posting with some frequency.
  7. Phelps Hospital ELSP typically runs one each quarter. Call them at 366-ELSP for more information. You can also check the website at http://www.phelpshealth.org/ tho it isn't updated often.
  8. Pat: I'll double check your screenname but I thought I had you in my buddylist. I haven't seen you online or talked to you in a while. I'll give you a hand if I catch you online.
  9. Good to know. I only knew about the Uniden thing becuase I worked there, but that was 15 years ago. Are the GRE ones any good? I recall the Bearcat one's being pretty decent.
  10. Pat, Two suggestions: Your menu on the left side overflows into the main textual area on the right. Try dropping your font size a touch in your "menulinks" class. Also I notice you use the same menu on multiple pages. Have you ever played with server side includes? It would allow you to make one file with a single copy of the menu you use and have it display on each page that you want it on. This way, if you want to change the navigation menu, you only have to change a single file, and not a dozen.
  11. Not for nothing, If I live down the street from a hospital (and I do somewhat), I wouldn't wait either. The average time it takes for the ambulance to get out the door is MUCH longer than it would take me to drive to the ER, even in heavy traffic (5 minutes).
  12. You MAY be able to delay your state final exam test date if you do not turn 18 until June. I suggest talking to your instructor.
  13. Last I checked, most of the Rs stuff is just rebranded Bearcat. You can probably get the Bearcat equivalent cheaper at a good scanner store online.
  14. This has been all over the internet since 2003. There is one site that literally has dozens of spoofs of the original video. He was even spoofed in a recent Family Guy episode. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Kid
  15. Yeah...i thought it was pretty stupid as well. Ditto with the Burger King Whopper commercial.
  16. Not all of the commercials are on Google Videos yet. The MacGuyver one that I missed, the Jackie Chan Pepsi one and the defib one aren't there as of yet. They appear to be adding more with time, so stay tuned.
  17. Did 60 Control add additional dispatchers/call takers to handle the extra load?
  18. Considering the small size of EMT classes these days, I wouldn't be too concerned about the maximum size of the class. The more people that enroll just means the CIC needs to get more CLIs to teach labs. I highly doubt the class will exceed capacity. Just register early if you wish to attend. It would be more likely for the class to be cancelled due to LACK of enrollment.
  19. Westchester County has a system called i-page which is integrated into the CAD system and automatically pages calls out to the people in the appropriate paging groups. If you are successful in getting on your feet and your local dispatch center that dispatches EVAC has a similar system, maybe they would be willing/able to put you into the system so that you are paged when a call goes out on your campus. Way back when we did our own alpha paging (in the days before nextel) we had a console from Motorola that basically was a TTY terminal and a modem that allowed you to send out your own pages and not have to go through an operator every time. You can also get software that is readily available that will allow you to send pages to pagers, cell phones, etc for Windows. I will see what I can find in the Sharware/Public Domain for you. Getting setup with Nextel or similar and putting all the phones in a talk group could prove beneficial but pricey. If you setup a call group for a bunch of nextels and stick one in your campus security dispatch office, one key up of the nextel would signal all of your team. Consider talking to a Nextel rep. Other cell carriers are also offering similar services. I saw a commercial on TV recently for a carrier offering a service similar to nextel call groups but adds the ability to see on your phone who is online and who is unavailable/DND. I cannot recall the carrier's name at this time. EDIT: Quick Google reveals: http://www.notepager.com/
  20. Is this play money for prizes or cash for cash?
  21. Just so you guys know, AirTran is the new name of the company that had the plane go down in the everglades. I forget the original name and don't care to look it up. I'll stick with JetBlue, thanks.
  22. We locked in at $2.29 back at the end of summer. When I first started paying for oil back in 2002, we were paying $1.19. Pretty sad that the price has doubled in less than 4 years.
  23. WEMS staffs the dispatch center in WEMS uniforms. no Somers FD designations/rockers/etc. Two dispatchers from 7am to 11pm, one from 11pm to 7am.
  24. First example that pops into my head is cold water drowning.
