  1. Funny. I seem to recall a lot of people saying they wouldn't go work for Empire when the transfer from Alamo went through. Wonder where a lot of them went to. Oh yeah. Empire.
  2. IMHO, in viewing this video it appears the fire truck driver is at fault: 1) Fire Engine's direction of travel appears to have the red light. 2) There is also what appears to be a stop sign. 3) Fire truck makes no effort to stop and make sure it is clear before proceeding. The motorcycle might be a little at fault for going through the intersection quickly, but if the engine had slowed down to make sure there is no approaching traffic, a potentially fatal accident could have been avoided.
  3. The backup camera is an interesting addition. Will have to see how that works....probably a screen in the visor or something. I'd rather have backup proximity sensors TBH, but not sure if they are available in Fords. Nice looking vehicle.
  4. I left just before the trophys were presented. I'm sure someone here has them. Yeah the weather was perfect for a parade. Pawling's was short but fun none the less. Mad props to Port Jervis for hauling themselves and a decent sized crew all the way across the state to attend. I'll see if I can get some pictures uploaded soon for all you buffy types.
  5. What time do the two parades kick off? I think I saw someone say that Lake Carmel started at 7?
  6. Do you think someone who tosses paint on any old surface just to get their "tag" seen cares how much it costs? They've tagged police cars even.
  7. Anymore details on the Pawling parade, specifically the route? I knew the carnival was this weekend but this is the first I'm hearing of a parade.
  8. When I worked Abbey back in the 90's we only had two buses (both ALS) after midnight during the week. Mobile 1 and Mobile 2. Mobile 2 would cover transports (BLS after midnight and ALS) so frequently left only one bus available for the city. It actually wasn't too often that we had no bus available for a call, and when that happened, Mobile 1 would frequently do a quick turnaround from WPH or Agnes. During the day if it got busy and Mobiles 1 and 2 were out, we'd use the BLS fleet and one of the supervisors would cover ALS with 4004 (the old RAM charger flycar) or Rich Robinson would cover in his Caprice. Back then more than 50% of the population of White Plains was workers or shoppers. I'm sure it's shifted more towards permanent residents now with the huge apartment buildings dotting downtown. I think Transcare will also pull the truck from Grasslands for mutual aide if needed. But nothing beats going mutual aide from WP to NR during the days when both the NR buses were out.
  9. IS Joel still on the job in Beacon or did he leave for the big chair at Empire/HVPS?
  10. Didn't Joel become a DCSO Officer? OR am I thinking of someone else?
  11. Care to mention who this new management team consists of?
  12. Also consider the size of a childs head in relation to their body. That combined with the brittle nature of their aforementioned undeveloped skeletal system makes them vulnerable to this type of injury, but still it is rare. Would be helpful to see an autopsy report but I think I'll pass and just pray for the family.

  14. And to think my involvement in this call was limited to moving my truck out of the way so 35-1 could get his truck out and go buff....i mean respond to the call. It originally came over as responding to the Riverfront Green in Peekskill, but then got bumped north. See what happens when I change zones Tom? On a side note, turns out my brother is good friends with all the parties involved. I wish them all a quick recovery and hope the family and friends of the departed are able to mend with time after such a tragic loss.
  15. IT would appear that multiple apparatus approached the scene initially AGAINST the flow of traffic and thus are parked with their nose up stream. As far as selective spinal immobilization, NYS as a whole has selective spinal immobilization. It is unfortunately rule IN vs rule OUT, but it's better than having to immobilize everyone just because they were in a fender bender. Sure it APPEARS that the scene could have more traffic safety and control measures put into place, but thankfully nobody was hurt in the process of operation on scene (to my knowledge) and that is at least a step in the right direction. Even the smoothest piece of silk is bound to have a wrinkle or two. Those can be ironed out in debrief and use as a learning tool for future operations.
  16. Did I miss something about fireworks in Beekman tonight. Sounded like a nice display was going on over the mountain but I don't recall seeing an announcement for anything this weekend (Dover was last weekend, Pawling is two weekends from now). Any info?
  17. Sounded like it. Too bad it was a private show. The flashes looked good from over the hill. Looking forward to the fireworks in two weekends at the fire house. I'll have to find someone to watch the kid tho. She seems to have developed a phobia of things that go boom.
  18. Mobile Intensive Care Nurse. They work the "flycars" ('MICUs) and do the ALS on interfacility transports in Jersey. All ALS in Jersey is Hospital based. MICPs make on par with paramedics from other states, but from what I have seen, MICNs make about 10-20 dollars more per hour to do the same job.
  19. Forget being a paramedic. Go become a nurse. Twice the pay, much higher demand, better hours, and more flexibility in what you can do (home care, hospital care, doctor's office, transport medicine, etc). Or get the best of both worlds and move to Jersey and become an MICN.
  20. No it isn't. You pay for it via your premiums. Mine just went up almost 17%. Next year I'll likely be paying over $50 a week just for medical insurance.
  21. The one in the village is converted to village hall I think. When I walked by there were offices and the satellite for DCS was on the side. Fire whistle is still on time which made me take notice to the building in the first place - not sure if it's still used.
  22. You should really see a doctor about that.
  23. Don't forget, you get what you pay for. Billing for services and using the funds to hire a crew to staff the ambulance(s) sounds like a better situation than not getting out and risking having the town ambulance corp shut down completely.
  24. In an answer to your question, little solid evidence is known about the man and his current whereabouts. I'm sure most believe he died for his actions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_Man
  25. Having recently moved to the SouthEast corner of Dutchess I've been doing some websurfing, looking into various aspects of life in the area - particularly history and whatnot. The other day my brother (who used to work up that way) asked me if I knew about Oniontown. I told him I'd never heard of the place. He mentioned that it had gained a lot of publicity lately on the net and otherwise, and not the good kind. Seems some kids went driving up there one day and took some video of the area off Oniontown Road (just off Route 22 near Dover Plains) that showed what I basically could summize was a fairly run down trailer park in a not so well to do area. Hell, I've seen areas similar in places where I work. To me, not a big deal. Well the video became a bit of a viral thing on youtube (not wildly popular but enough to make others take notice). Some kids from Mahopac drove up there to check the place out and I guess were less than civilized and got themselves a beatdown. Apparently they cited the youtube video as being what prompted them to go up there. I'm guessing there have been other incidents as well (a drunk guy from Poughkeepsie who got a rock thrown onto his car comes to mind). So my question is this. Whats the big deal? Being a bit of a history buff I'd be interested in some local insight on the history of the area. I keep hearing about inbreeding and the like, but I've heard the same about places like Verplank and Walden - if it does exist, it's usually isolated. Plus I'd be interested to know how the original video makers may have come to know about the area - perhaps some folklore I have not seen from some background work on the internet. Heres the video in question (since removed from youtube for supposed "TOS violations"): http://video.aol.com/video-detail/oniontow...ures/3251516449 It's interesting to note that the passenger in the front seat appears to be wearing a turnout jacket.
