I've heard some calls lately where there was no command until the batt. chief got there. Besides it seems like if the IC is handling the situation the Batt. goes 10-8 fairly quickly at some of these calls. Fire is Doubtful" sounds alittle funny but sometimes its more of a size up then some IC's out there are giving you

On-Spots are great until you reach those high inches of snow on the roads when the snow is coming down too fast and the town stops plowing till it slows down. Thats when snow chains come in handy. As for the stand-bys... It is usual for us to have an in-house stand-by when we're supposed to get a lot of snow or really bad weather (i.e. bad flooding, downpoors, ice storms, etc.) As 635 said...Very essential bc then you don't have all the vollies trying to get to the firehouse without crashing all over. Why risk peoples' health when you don't need to. Luckily for me, I am in a company where everyone hangs out at the firehouse when there is bad weather even if a stand-bys isn't called. So even if there is no stand-by, if you don't have anything to do, and you don't have 4-wheel drive, just hang out at the firehouse. No reason to get urself killed for a stupid run!

Jus call it a quint LOL Personally i don't get it either...If these departments are going to start Squad companies, they need to decide if they are going to BE Squad companies OR engine companies

Wow, on the chiefs car... Where are you from? and what happens when the chief isn't around? In my town, we have a TIC on our FAST engine and we have our main TIC in our rescue truck which also holds the TV monitoring equipment. Not sure how long thats gonna last since the rescue never gets out! Personally i think it belongs on the Truck bc its the first rig pulling up in front and they're the first in the building...But, in order to have that, you need to act like a real truck company thats gets off with a full crew every call

"Doctors Ambulance company policy permitted him to go through an intersection against a red light at 15 to 20 mph as long as it was safe." I don't know about me but this doesn't seem very safe to me. As you guys said... Inch up, make sure you can make eye contact with all drivers and there isn't a single lane out of eye vision...then proceed with extreme caution. I don't understand what kinda policy that is!!!

As well as being chief operator to an apparatus, it is their job to make sure every little aspect of the apparatus they are assigned to is in working condition. All the equipment, tools, radios, air-packs, etc... including the rig and all its fuels and fluids are filled all the time. They also report on when things go wrong (i.e. air leaks, water leaks, or fluids leaks) and if equipment is out of service. All notification goes to the captain who then reports to the chief.
