  1. Classy reply. My friends who partied the four years I dug ditches and did inter-facility transports are in $100,000 debt and using their History and Communications degrees to work at the mall and wait tables while I'm making a good living, establishing a retirement and looking at houses. Nothing is a definite and you get out of life what you put in to it.
  2. You gotta be kidding me. That truly is a shame that for the amount of service you provide for that cost that they wouldn't float this.
  3. Headed down I-95 to the port of Baltimore

  5. There's no need to argue, parents just don't understand
  6. Every 18 year old says they can handle it. As a former 18 year old, I fully support a 21+ age limit.
  7. I did them at the same time so I can't remember what evolutions were part of which test, but I believe FFI was gear donning, SCBA inspection, hitting a hydrant, and tying a few knots. FFII was auto extrication, ventilation, raising a ladder and running a foam eductor.
  8. Rescue One has also built on Sutphen chassis, and ALF sells the Eagle to third parties also
  9. Bunk ins work where there is enough activity to keep people interested. No one is going to pull shifts at the firehouse to run no hitters and BS EMS runs. And honestly, I know people will get offended but it makes me absolutely sick to my stomach when we got guys getting laid off and companies closed in cities and the money earmarked for FDs goes to "studies" and "recruitment" events for VFDs.
  10. That's a great video by that journalist. Utica FD is a world class fire department, I haven't seen any other department that puts so much in to physical fitness, respect, training and pride. I can say with utmost certainty that these guys tried 150% to get in there the best humanly possible. Great job guys and I'm glad to see the media finally supporting someone in our field.
  11. Vulcan LED and a Survivor LED. Unlike a lot of people I use the Vulcan with the strap extended, notsomuch tight under my armpit, also have some hockey tape over the quick seatbelt style release, which prevents accident release but you can still release it through the tape. The main thing people have to say about the Survivor is when you crawl it points down, well along the same lines as what M'Ave said, there's a lot of things you do with your coat on besides crawl, whether its hitting the hydrant, standpipe, overhaul, etc.
  12. I just can't understand how people can continue to think that just because they are volunteer they deserve special treatment. As if cardiac arrest and fire spread decide to stop the clock to give you time to go through three dispatches and 5 minutes to drive from home to get the rig. Three minute response time is very reasonable if you sit in the building that the big red trucks and big white boxes are in, I know this because I do this. Maybe the local VAC should. Maybe if the VAC guys don't wanna do this, they should consolidate with the other 13 VACs in town or hire people.
  13. Apples and oranges when you factor in crew size and manpower needs. The average EMS call gets 1 unit, the average fire call gets at least 5.
  14. It's a little bulky, but the Mini 5 is remarkably easy to program with free software and a $10 cable from ebay. I can't set the time on my microwave but I was able to reprogram a M5 with four completely different settings for two different FDs in under 60 seconds my first time trying.
  15. Nice pics. Just a couple of minor things, it's on our roster as a 1990 Mack/Saulsbury, supposedly ex R2 and correct about the little known pump, although the pump has been OOS for about five years now.
  16. You can have a ladder truck, a brush truck, a rescue truck, but that is an engine
  17. Sounds like FOIL time. I'll help you stamp the envelopes
  18. I can understand not having full time details, and I can even understand the logic on not having any police presence there. But it makes sense to have a car there, especially when we have two guys posted at the movie theater every weekend.
  19. I find it interesting that all these government figures were appearing in public and no police agency was on hand. Around here we have cops standing at the mall and Wal Mart.
  20. To make matters worse, he parked in front of the hydrant
  21. Can you as a private citizen FOIL (Freedom of Information) the State Police to see if they arrested someone for a crime?
  22. Things have come full circle, it used to be "Let's buy it because FDNY uses it," now it's "We won't buy it because FDNY uses it." Globe has the lion's share of the market around here. I've had two sets of Globe and I've had two sets of Morning Pride. The MP is leaps and bounds better than the G-Extreme. I'd compare it to wearing a Neil Armstrong spacesuit vs a sweatshirt and sweatpants. The Morning Pride feels like it fits, the Globe feels like I'm wearing one of those fat guy suits.
  23. How about just don't use anything made by Globe
  24. Sounds like a commercial EMS supervisor is thinking of a different commercial business plan. How about we do some system status management and move some engines from Staten Island to street corners on the UES. Genius.
