This drill is in its 8th year---FDNY has set the standard as to what IT wants for ANY mutual aid form ANY department. FDNY has desiginiated Westchester departments to cover the BRONX nothing more. Yonkers Raceway is the stageing area. OFPC with the help of WCDES Field Com checks the TRAINING RECORDS participents to make sure they meet the standard that FDNY has set. then they are given assigements and are escorted into the city. Todays drill went off smoothly with the help of OEM and OFPC. Citi Field is another staging area that uses Long Island companies that will cover Queens. Is is my understanding that a third staging area is being developed on Staten Island for Coverage from NJ units. ALL participents must meet the FDNY standard.

watched most of the show yes i was flipping around but found one thing interesting--the Officer letting the firefighter on duty with at least a two days growth on his face. we all know it might look cool and sexy but violates most fire department rules as well as OSHA and CFR 1910.156 or one of those that state no more then one days growth--just my thoughs. one more thing I dont think ANY paramedic is risking their job to give some one a drug no matter how sexy they are.. more random thoughts Like Seth i will watch it again just to see what happens.

house men do not fall into any catagory they arent "firefighters" they are cleaners/maintainence men/gardeners. What it does is make response times much lower so some can say " we arrived on scene with in 3 min" I have spent many hours debating this point on Long Island.
-
firehousemen are personel that are paid by the Department or Fire district to work in the stations as what ever?? they can be grass cutters/snow removal men-- work on apparatus and they respond to fires while on duty. This procudure goes around Civil service.

it seems pretty simple to me heres how ihandled it when asked in an Officers class--"if you cant do it in the library or in police headquarters what make you think you can do it in the fire house?" in most cases the Department/company do not own the buildings--we are coustodians of the buildings--they belong to the public paid for by the public with taxes. just my thoughts

My condolances go out to the whole Chulla Family.,I was lucky enough to know Mr.Chulla as a young firefighter in NT--now Sleppy Hollow. he always had a encourganging word to say to us youngsters. He always had a smile on his face and extreamly dediciaded to the fire service. So I not only salute a memebr of the "Greatest Generation" for his work for our Country but also salute his work in and for the fire service. I know his work and committment to the fire service has been passed to his son Rich-- the Chulla tridation will live on. Walter Ferguson Former Ladder 38 NTFD

Wether you like the site or dont care for the site. this has become a place to get information from others in the field. its a place where we can exchange ideas and information. look at how other departments handle things , even monday morning quarterbacking is allowed.. we can look at pictures and say I might have done this or that. I know i have used many pictures from this site in classes. I guess what I am saying is it is time to step up reach in--- if every one just put in there coffee money for the week--you dont drink coffee--fribble money what ever you get the point. This site has given us many oppurnities to advance the fire service. Its time for the fire service to give back. leets rise tot he occuasion.

Firefighter one might as you say "Gloss" over Building construction but as a Instructor i and many of my brother Instructors always state this is just the begining--learn your buildings- take a building construction course. Do not let this be the last you see of building construction. Capt Nechis is right never say your training let you down

You may be right they are like the Elks Club or any service organization BUT when they send out letters that say "please send you TAX EXEMPT Donation to xyz fire company" the situation changes also on that note if the Fire Department send the letter out and recieves the donation and then distributes it to the Fire Companies that also changes the status. Everyone here on this thread knows that fire companies need money to do things-- donations to little leagues--sponsors to other organizations--pay for bands at parades--company outings. that is all well and good and keeps members interested in belonging. All concerned must be carefull when dealing with public monies and how they are recieved and spent. But mosy if all we have to be concerned in how the public preseves us. They after all is said and done are the ones we are sworn to protect.

you can change "home rule" and "AHJ" any time you want. AHJ means just that " authority having jursticiation" so lets as a town or village or city or fire district cnd mandate any fire training they deem appropreate for their community. all they have to do is vote and pass the requirement locally. its that easy. The career depatments didnt want to chance that a muinicipality would back out and not pass it so they went another route they went legislatively and got a a law passed. i know because I was involved with bot the starting of the 229 and the PASS alerts. So it can be done either way. It is up the the local towns and villages to give the best protection to the citizens. As i like to say " Train like your life depends on it because it does"
-
As always NYS is a home rule state and each and every organization has AHJ. Having said that this is good news for the fire service. It finally lets departments have something to hang their hats on when it comes to training.

Two thoughts on the subject 1- I had Nick in a few classes at the training center. A fire department could only wish for 20 or 30 more like him. 2- A fire company/ Department can raise all the funds they want and use it for anything they want as long as they adhere to the laws of new york and are honest with the community. Ex dont tell them it is TAX EXEMPT when its not. ok one more thought any one who has taken a Fire Officer class witih me has heard the following. "if you cant do it in the library or the police station you brobely cant do it in the fire station" most if not all fire houses are public buildings-public law apply. Irvington has a great many courageous firefighters and will work out their problems and they will continue their service in a professional manner to protect the citizens and the community and any one that happens to be in the community.

this is a serious situation first condolances to the family and friends and the Peekskill community for your lose. Riding the back of a vehicle any vehicle is olny asking for trouble. I do remember riding the tail board many years ago but hopefully we have learned our lesson. heres a simple answer to the problem-- follow the G truck with a little pick up truck 2 or three men can ride in the pick up or they can leap frog each other anad make the g pick up easier still mopving at a fast pace. I dont think it would add much to a budget and it would be worth more then the death of a worker. just my thoughs

No one knows more about Glenville then Avon Rob thats for sure!!
-
Glenville fire station is off Benedict Ave but its on the South side of Benedict near old White plains Road

There might be difference in having the grades adjusted by the court system--and cheating on the exam. If you worked at the Department how do you now trust that individual?? Would they be willing to compromise in a fire inspection?? or how about telling you dinner was 10 a man when it was only 5?? greed is powerfull?
-
Knowing these fine professionals men and women that work at 60 control-- I am sure they would all say "just doing my job" and they all do there job in the most professional way. Robbie was in the right place at the right time, that is all a emergency worker can hope for. Congratulations Walter
-
how do you prove this?? one of two ways i think either they admitted it--in which case his heart got the best of him. or the other guy squeeled to someone in which case i am not sure i would protect them either. or some one just laid it out there hoping something would happen--jealouse person. any way or which way it isne a pretty situation fo rthe individual--the department or the career fire service as a whole. lets hope its all misunderstanding and we all get to live our lives normally.

Somtimes they are right " YOU CANT FIX STUPID" NOT EVEN WITH DUCT TAPE.

Good lord where oh where to start this thread. I will do it in segments--because my memory need time to digest things and time to remember allof it lets start with open air cabs--nice in the spring and summer--not so nice in the winter. Scott pacs?? we didnt need no stinking scott pacs-- fact is we didnt have any. used MSA filter maske that had litmis paper as a indicator of of how much time you had left---try seeing that in the dark. Wait see the memory is kickking in--- we had one new fangled bottle of air carried in a suitcase type not even a suitcase looked more like a magicians case where he keeps Charlie McCarthy--you young guys go google him more later after I nap and take some gincakoba.
-
and here I thought it was four parade judges getting a better look at the men and apparatus as they went by. just kidding---always nice to see pictures of the past and then we can see how much we have improved--at least in apparatus.
-
We do raise our right hand and sware to GOD to uphold the consituation of the united States--the consituation of the State and bylaws of the organization plus the citizens of the community. Can they sware by that??
-
Firefighters die every year PERIOD!! This is not a game where we can only be in it when we want to. You have raised your right hand and swore to protect the citizens of your community. You owe it to them--you owe it you your selves--you owe it to your brother firefighters--you owe it to your family--to do the best you can. Train like your life depends on it BECAUSE it does. Put the training in place--give the firefighters a chance to reach the level--you just might see the level of training rise. Thoses that think its ok not to train or that training is only a minimal part move out of the way because the new generation of firefighters are on their way and your blocking them.
-
This may be a dumb question - but in the case of combination departments, can the department/district say that all firefighters (paid or volunteer) have the same minimum training (the 229)? Yes they can!! The AHJ can set the standard as high as they wish as long as it meets the minium. All career departments have to meet , by law ,229 hours of training and a minium of 100 hours annually. it is also broken down in hours and subjects. Just to make it more interesting I do have a hard time relating to combo departments that have different standards within them selves. yes I came from one and still could not understand the reasoning. it just made no sense. It only seems ro reason that the better trained all firefighters are the better chance we have of protecting the citizens we have sworn to protect. it all seems so simple. Then we go and !@@$ it up.

Chief If your Department has as its foundation FireFighter one, then the OFPC has an equilivant as to what consituates firefighter one. At least it does if you are going to test for National Certification. I am not sure if this answers your question or not but if you are referring to an older firefighter that might want to meet the new standard they either have to have the equlivent or take the firefighter one and survival.
