  1. heres good point wil they spell "verterans" right its misspelled ont the othe pieces of apparatus that they have. just a note of observation---- a lot of men gave a lot time energy and blood for us.
  2. huson when are you coming out with that as a new dog?? then agsin any thing is possible where you have the dogs!!!
  3. even sanation workers are being killed riding the back of their apparatus. new law requiring helmets is in albany (i believe) soon they wont be riding back there either. glad the old days are over---god what we did in the past--how many of you rember filter masks?? before scba were popular??god i hate to date my self. but thats what we had "in the good old days" filter mask with tape on the bottom to cover the opening, when you went to a fire and used the mask you undid the tape out the maks on fought the fire, resealed the tape, checked the litmus paper indicator to see what color it was , it it was blue you were still good to go. only had 2 scba in each company. now look at us
  4. i remember thoses days too but you know what its 2006 time to move on--no riding the rear step period!
  5. thanks als for getting us back to the right area of the subject. Does the public know what we spend their money on?? pretty simple how do weo justify buying whe we do?? where do we spend the money? how much is spent on "enteraining" things--parades, comventions, trips, non fire stuff that uses public money.
  6. I spoke with some of the FDNY guys while I was out at F.D.I.C. last week.We are trying to set up a demo day so departments can come see the system and how it works. keep an eye open for the announcement for the date and time
  7. some where we are getting off the topic but thats ok breathing fresh air into it helps--- DaveTFD you said you get "outsidedonation" that one you have to explain . If its any money that comes from the public they have a right to know where and what its being used for. this topic isnt about beer buying for parades-- thats a whole other thread. alchol DOES NOT BELONG IN A FIRE STATION. THEY ARE PUBLIC BUILDING. I wanted to know about the education process that department use to educate the taxpayers. I like the idea of a public report every year , its a accountability system that i thinkik works. but it should include more then just the number of runs. the citizens shouldnt have to dig or beg to get information form the fire department on where money is being spent.
  8. do any fire departments bother to explain to the new members any history of the fire service?? or do you just let them go with out any knowledge of the past and how it effects the future. if they knew that fire apparatus were red because its the color of courage mabey we wouldnt have blue fire apparatus any more. Ther are a lot of things that should beb handed down from generation to generation. There would be more pride what does your department do?
  9. good point turk-- what about money raised and spent on beer and parades. does mrs smith who sent in 100.00 check thing her money is being spent wisely.
  10. New fire stations are being build all over the county. More and more money is being spent on apparatus. What does your department do to educate the public when spending thousands or hundreds of thousands of taxpayer money??
  11. I wish all the firefighters involved a speedy recovery. Accidents do happen, sometimes we can do things to aviod them. Apparatus accidents make up almost 25% of firefighter deaths in this country. That includes responding to and from and personal cars. This is one way we can lower the firefighter deaths. Chiefs- make sure you operators have a EVOC course. make sure they drive on a constent basis. Keep records--keep very good records. Firefighters-- respond with caution-- you didnt start it--be careful out there. lets lower at least this part of firefighters death. Getting behind a Eng or Ladder isn't a game take it seriouly. A piece of apparatus in an accident isnt helping the situation.
  12. god --- dont you just love the way ALS talks-- I hate to follow him but would follow him any where. The standards should be met or at least-- have a plan in place. where you are attempting to achieve those standards. They all cant be met at once BUT if you are looking to the furure and are attempting to meet the standards you are at least on stable ground. Have a plan-- Have it written -- Have the plan approved by higher ups--Mayor-Board of Trustrees --Fire Commissioner. Board of Fire Wardens. This 6 yrear into the new century guys-- lets get with it--sorry to say the "good old days" are long gone. It's the year of the men in suits sueing for all sorts of reasons. Please don'e be caught on the short end.
  13. your not the only one dave I'm sure the village wil build you exactaly what you want!!! not necessarly what is needed. You guys in 77 have to do some public education for you citizens in that area--damage control. blame the village officials the are the utlimite responsible party. if you need anything let me know
  14. Dave im a lot closer to the department then you might think relative or no not. 77 should not have been put in the predicitment that they are in. 78 the same way. no planning no looking ahead from the board or the wardens. the chief should be putting things in order, trouble is-- dont take it personal-- chief but your on your way out the day you come in. make the chief position 2 yr terms. make the chief a department wide election. make the chief have some real training not just essentials. establish creditable training -- not just riding around-- im sure there are some real training going on. i dont want to offend any one or piss any more people off then necessary. Tarrytown has some fine firefighters real gong ho worth their weight in salt firefighters. then there are the others no more has to be said. build your fire houses one, two its too late for all the bullshit now but think of the citizens that you are sworn to protect. have a plane be proactive its not all parades and conventions. im an e mail away if not closer. in fact i will probely be closer to 78 then you are to 77......
  15. wee ohhh some one aggrees with me!!!! they arent looking into the future and neither is the department. Second bay is important to the department and they should be looking for one no demanding ==one instead they are all satified because they think only of themselves. sorry dave but i think it true. when tarrytown f. d. starts to think as a department instead of individual companies thats when there will be progress.
  16. imnot arguing the point that the town needed a second ladder not arguinig the point that 78 trains on the ladder. The point is that the village officials knew and let happen the buying of a 980,000 piece of equipment knowing that it didnt fit in any of the stations. they allowed the purchase knowing that 77 had no station. THEY had no plan for the future!!!!! they werent prepared thats for sure, the department wouldnt be in the situation they are in if the village officals had plan instead of just stickking their respectives asses in the sand( can i say that) they certinly dont want to piss off the fire department that for sure. that voting block can swing any election. wel mabey they arent as stupid as i think they are mabey is me hmmm as for the color i really dont care in the 40 yrs i have been in the service i have never seen the color of a piece of apparatus put out a fire. trained firefighters do, the better trainied the better the department if you have to build 2 stations build em if you build one big one build it. The officials stillhave their heads in their a-- no one is looking ahead. what happens when 37 is ready thats not long accorcing to some people. the person reviewing the specs said excatly what you would expect him to say-- you got a piece of apparatus with allthe bells and whiltles and they work just fine. its not his money thats he is spending do you think that 78 could have waited another yr or 2 to get a new engine---mabey i dont think it would matter . I just think that the village got its self ina situation with out thinking and they have no way out. me personaly and its just my opinion--- build a 2 bay station on 119 build it for the future. to me a second house on meadow dosent make a lot of sense. I know about response times where the drivers live and allthat. can yoiu take the foot priint of the building on main street add a few feeet to the top so 78 can get in and pt it on the site on 119?? but like i said its only my opinion and you know what they say about opinions -- sorry to ramble but had a long day with the probies--- pump operations allday so im a little tired.
  17. somtimes i just cant help my self--heres another thought if the village wasent so screwed up they would have never let 78 get away with what they did.. I know its done and we all have to live with it. its a beautiful truck but gees guys all that money?? and blue too!!and buying it knowing it wouldnt fit in any of the stations is wrong just wrong. knowing that 77 needed a home they deserve letting it "slip through the cracks" is no answer. wehre was the common sense where was the watch dogs where were the voters. ok ok im done for today
  18. lets not forget the fact that no matter-- who you are what your qualifications are-- if your elected to a position YOU and only YOU are the respopnsible person when something goes south in a hurry. If some one gets hurt or some ones house burns down or a business section of town is destroyed by fire and your the Chief "BECAUSE IT'S YOUR TURN" MY ADVICE AND I GIVE IT FREELY TO YOU GUYS AS FIRE FRIENDS IS GET A GOOD ATTORNY FAST cause your rear is in the cooker and the stove is on. Try and tell a jury I'm the Chief because it's my turn!! see where that gets you. If you have never been before a jury and asked questions by a opposing attorny count your lucky stars. Try and qualify your self. heres the first question after your name and swaring to god the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth!! State your qualifications to be a fire officer. ans-- I dont have any state Certifications but!!! ---- your dismissed next!!! no you dont understand we train in house its just as good!! next your dismissed---- wait we have been doing fighting fires this way since my father was chief in 19-- next your dismissed You getting the picture enough rambliing you can teli have had a hard day with the probies!!!
  19. so dave you been doing some home work huh dont use that any more outgrew that long time ago
  20. Im back for the instructors confrence dave
  21. In most departments here in the county the elections are a popular contest and qualifications are at least a second thought. Till something happens and OSHA and PESH come to town nothing will change. Having said that some departments are moving along into the new century anda are doing it well. Having firefighter 1 and 2 as a start followed by survival. Then haveing to take Intro to Fire Officer, Fire Officer 1, mabey even Firefighter Health and Safety, followed closely bt Incident Safety Officer. And included in all this I 100, I 200, I 700 NIMS If your department isnt moving in this direction youare doing the citizens of your community a disservice, as stated above in one of the responses YOU ARE NOT THE ELKS CLUB WITH A FIRE TRUCK YOU ARE SWORN TO PROTECT THE CITIZENS OF YOUR COMMUNITY.
  22. Just some advice for the OFD and their Chief--- do a public education for the citizens--get them on your side!! It will make the fire station become a reality much faster. Your department is in the forefront of the fire service in the county--highly respected amoung your peers. the people of the area should know that and everything else about the department. Talk in fact and figures not in speculation . make your statements true,be honest with the citizens of Ossining and I'm sure you will get your station.
  23. if you need help convincing the members contact me through here Im sure we canset something up. you are correct old habits do die hard but you have to convince them its the right way to go. keep up the good work. remember training is good certified training is better
  24. Dave you seem like a very intelligent person and are up to date with your comments but if the board is going to vote and are excluding those with fd connections --not many of them will not be voting-- mary's husband and children are TFD--Toms wife I believe belongs to TFD and Chrise' s brother is TFD so I dont think it will be a even vote do you? next- training is good ---certified training is better. find out how many of your firefighters meet firefighter 1 or firefighter 2 standards- Thats what New York state is mandating. how many of them have physicals-- how many are fit tested. how many recieved their osha training last yr. How many have had EVOC What does the State print our say. What about being NIMS complience. If you dont think its important go for a grant and see. Look at other department and see what they are doing. How antiquated are the by-laws when were they last updated next- lad 78 is a big piece of firefighting equipment- to set it up porperly it takes a space of 18 feet from the tip of one outrigger to the tip of the other. I know you can short jack it but it is not recmended. I truly hope you get what you want and need but the public needs to be assured and public education is imoprtant. enough for now I will be away for a few days going to Indianapolis for the Fire Instructors confrence. Chat with you guys when i get back.
  25. Theres a department that is looking ahead congratulations to OFD !!! keep up the great work it shows off when the excreatment hits the osculating machine(fan)
