  1. thanks fo rthe information guys-- I always knew you guys were smart.
  2. The State should use the money to up grade other training centers like rockland and westchester.
  3. You cant make this sh** up you dont think this could happen in Westchester do you??? Hmmmmm
  4. my understanding is a fall class too
  5. Shame on the officer in charge for letting that happen. Now another generation of firefighters will believe that they dont have to ware a mask at a car fire. what is that bad sh** that is coming out of that car?? I'm not a haz- mat expert but even a dumb a** like me can tell you that what ever that is --it's no good for your loungs.
  6. Dave will the new Washington Eng building have an elevator too??
  7. there are a lot of new fire stations being build recently, can any one tell me if by code they have to have handicap access to floors above the first one?? ie elevator or stair chair. I know that these buildings are "public" but do they have to meet the ADA. just wanted to know and you guys are the smartest people out there. thanks
  8. Here's some food for thought--- we live in communities-- well most of us any way-- we have police departments- we dont give them a badge and a gun and say go protect us?? do we?? But in our service we elect a member-- give them a physical(mabey) and say dont worry you will get your training soon--or someday. The next day he/she might be riding the fire apparatus to a house fire. Seems antiquaited at best dosent it? When will we get out act togeather?? soon I hope. just my thoughts
  9. No one and I mean no one can let training come in second. If you are not trained properly---bad things can happen-- lack of judgment, lack of vision-lack of knowledge. We have always stated that YOUR life is the most important thing on any emergency scene, dont put it in jeporady-because of a lack of training. Work hard---train right or dont go!!
  10. just have your chief ask for some help from the county I'm sure they can provide at least the right direction to head in to make sure your department is as safe as possible.
  11. Jim is a political appoinment and wil be leaving with a new administration. He has been wonderfull to the fire service esp here in Westchester. i have known Jim for a long long time and wish him well. ohh FYI Director Nagle wil lbe leaving also-- good luck To Dick--mabey we will see him teaching at Westchester Fire Training Center!!!!
  12. good topic!! i have stated in all my Firefighter 1 classes that I teach. when you are waring that shirt. coat, hat, jacket, helmet, or what ever, if it has a F.D. label, ,logo or any thing that resembles a F.D. You should remember that the whole fire service is in that logo. not just your department- do not do Any thing to harm the imiage. Ther has been way too much blood shed, and dieing in the fire service to have some one F***it up for the rest of us.. Heres an example-- months ago ther was a member of the public-not even living in Westchester in fact he hadent lived in Westchester for many years and no longer a memebr of a fire department--he was arrested. some internet thing with kids---- know what the local channel 12 had as a head line--- WESTCHESTER FIREFIGHTER ARRESTED FOR CHILD p***. when he was arrested he was waring a F.D. shirt. enough said
  13. great subject--and spelling dosent count- firefighter should be always looking and studying. continueing their eduacation. firefighter one is just the start. You all know the courses--we dont have to list them. get certified in as many as you can. Fire department drills should be a refresher to all classes not the exception. in other words go to classes do not depend on local drill as a suplament to certified education. keep abreast of current trends-- knnow whats out there-- know what can hurt you--or worse kill you. This is a dangerous profession we have chosen to be in(career or vol)do your best to stay alive. HEY-dont ride the tail boardsd either!!!
  14. hmmm I do agree that some departments are abusing mutual aid. it was never intended to be a source of manpower. when you are called to be a F.A.S.T. , that should be the main objective-- firefighter lives depend on you being there--- there for you are committed to that department just aas if you belonged to them. You are under their control. You cannot break off nor should you unless relieved by the I.C. The abuse of the mutual aid system has long been the subject of "conversation" amoung the firefighters for a long time. I remember being assigned to responf to a mutual aid call-- on arrival found 4 career firefighters sitting on the side walk having lunch-watching the fire. I was politely informed that they were not on duty-- nor were they being recalled to duty. The department wasent going to pay overtime when that could call mutual aid. Thats abuse!!! sorry to ramble but there are things to concider , bbut you cannot leave a mutual aid call unless you are relieved by the IC. pretty good subject I think lets hear more there has to be more opions out there.
  15. Irish if you are the chief up there heres the scoop. You are responsible for all members of your department when they resppond to an alarm. So if you dont have a system-- get one in place asap. If you recieve mutual aid--- You are responsible for ALL that respond to your alarm. have some kind of accountability for incoming apparatus. Heres another tip--- mutual aid firefighters must be interior qualified if they are going to preform those duties. Ask the incoming Officer those questions--- dont let your self and your department hanging out to dry if something happens.
  16. well mabey there is hope for the young BFD Dave is right on. The comic Ron White says it best"YOU CANT FIX STUPID" and thats what you are if you ride or allow any one to ride on the back of a fire apparatus,
  17. Bobby the fish must not be running!!! All firefighter should have a thick skin and any" introduction" into the fire service should be of the good natured variety. delibert harrassement should be corrected and not allowed. believe me that is a fine line.
  18. What a great family!! i have met the father- a wonderfull man- my thought and prayers are with the family. The BurnCare Foundation has helped as much as they can for the family-- and will do as much as possible for them. So i urge you to send in a donation to help this family. Walter Ferguson Director BurnCare Foundation Inc.
  19. Wait this thread cant close with out me!! I just got back from Alaska. I have read each comment and believe me there a lot of them. Plain and simple--- any apparatus Driver who allows any one on the apparatus in a not standard riding position is going to be sued(and lose) if some one falls off. period. any Chief of ANY Department that allows personel to ride in Any NON STANDARD POSITION WILL BE ADDED TO THE LAW SUIT. ANY COMMISSIONER, MAYOR, OR ELECTED OFFICAL REMEBER BEING STUPID IS NO EXCUSE YOU WIL BE ADDED TOO. AND DONT CLAIM YOU DIDNT KNOW THEY WERE DOING IT!! IT WONT WORK. LETS NOT BE STUPID WE LOSE OVER 100 FIREFIGHTERS PER YEAR-- THIS WE CAN CORRECT. Mabey the host department at parades should be required to have a bus to transport members. just a thought. another thought- mabey the parade judges association should disquailify any department that is seen with men riding on the apparatus. We want all firefighters to live to tell their grand children about the "good old days" so lets be safe--not stupid.
  20. what happend if and when it get disolved?? does the fire company stay in business? it will be interesting thats for sure. can the taxpayers pay another area to cover them?? can the taxpayers sell off the equipment? buildings? appartaus? and get a rebate ??
  21. cant agree more with you firefighter is a firefighter. but do respectivly disagree with some things. when a developer is asked to set aside part of his development for volunteer firefighter's there is a direct effect on the tax base of that community. when a resturant owner gives away dinner or discounts dinner to volunteer theres a direct effect on his living. when a community increases their tax bast to accomadate a losap program, there a direct effect on all taxpayers. are you offering housing incentives for the library volunteers? or the volunteers in the hospital? believe me i am not getting into a arguement over career vs vol but as a tax payer I am concerned. all we have to do is look at the articles last year about spending in long island to see that sometimes--- things can get out of control. If the condo owner is setting asides units for volunteers-- who sets the criteria. who followes it up? and what happens if the volunteer dosent meet the criteria?? as far as being a firefighter is concerned- my career probies just finished 13 weeks of traaining over 350 hours of class time plus 25 hours of class A burns plus passing a C.A.P.T. I'm a little tired and cranky and apoligize for sounding off. please forgive me. as they like to say debate is good for the soul as long as no one take a personal afront. I mean no disrespect to any one or organization.
  22. mabey ther should be some incentives like a losap program for them discount housing??
  23. my statement wasent ment to disparage any one or any person. just a statment of facts. when compensation is given for services rendered, i just dont think that the work "volunteer" should be used. believe me i am not bashing any one. you do not have to apologize to me or any one,and im not trying t9o get in a p-ssing match over vol vs career. just looking at the facts and making a observation. i might be way off base but again when you start to get compensation.
  24. kinda give new meaning to "volunteer" dosent it. pensions, housing, what next, hmmm lets sleep there so we can get out even faster.
  25. I have to agree with fd7808 on this one motiviation is the key make drills fun exciting and as real as possible, also as safe as possible. Companies should learn to work with each other, they should be interchangable parts. getting all your members certified as firefighter 1 is the top priority then work from there. all members should have safety and survival. bring in instructors to your departments even if its some one from the next department, so that your members dont have to listen to you all the time ))
