  3. Your foward thinking is always welcome Dave-- and your right it has been too long for your company to be with out a station. I am not sure where you get your figures about a career department from but i wont argue those right now. But if you wanted to supplement your Volunteers with career it can be done, but its a ugly pill to swallow. First the Department needs the overhaul. please dont be offended by what I say next. whats the building on Kaldenberg Place worth?? Theres a start. second do you need eng 76 and its location?? You wanted the ugly truth I dont think you need a apparatus there its less then 1/4 mile form lad37 and eng 79 and les the 1/2 mile form eng 80. Be Tarrytown firefighters . consolidate and selloff the property and all old used equipment. Elect your Chief by Department vote not just one company at a time. heres one fact that should convince you--- one compnay has to elect a Chief(any given year) lests say there are 50 active members in that compnay-- if each company has 50 members-- thats a department of 300 members-- the company in question has a by law that says ---"to be able to vote at the anual election of officers the member must have attended at least 4 meeting during the year" with me so far!!! they only get 20 at the annual meeting of the 20 only 15 can vote. they elect a chief vote 8-7 meaning that 8 members of a 300 man department elect the chief that will be in charge of the budget/fire alarms/ and in charge of protecting the public. i am not sure how i got on this subject Dave but i did your comments are always welcome as well as your honesty. Be good stay low
  4. Well as a taxpayer in Tarrytown--- if the Village Board votes to take the bids "as is" and its going to build at a gewarwe cost. The taxpayers should revolt. This is starting to border on criminal, They all better watch the next election results cause they wont be trustees any more they willbe "dont trust me trustees" this village board has been= promises= promises =promises but way short on delivery. the town needs a over haul anad so does the Fire Department.. Its time Tarrytown moved into the 21st century. ok i opened the door lets heres it form you guys
  5. how about this - SELL the property AND the old Washington Eng thats just for starters. build one combonation fire station If the Fire Cpmpanies still want to have their own stations let them come up with some CASH from their companies.... How much do each company have in their treasuries?? The village should build simple.
  6. would the money they recieve be taxed---hmmm mabey that opens up another can of worms. Does the money that they are to recieve come from public monies?? ie donations to F.D. If so ia it legal to do that with public monies. i am not totaly against the idea it sounds like it might be on the right track to retain personel.
  7. you got good advice always error on the side of respect---even if you think some of the chiefs are full of them selves--right Homer--- respect the rank if not the person.
  8. Hudson now that I have recieved the "NEW UPDATED VERSION OF ARFF" and am Certified to teach , I am avaiable to help you!!!! I do hope you are going to use the new and improved version and not the "OLD OUTDATED"stuff!!!! Dont worry I have it if you need it!!!! firecapt32 see you when I get back from lovely down town Montour Falls
  9. Hudson would be holding a hot dog??or a fish ?? or maybe both!!!!! Great Idea and a good cause--Its always wonderful when firefighters help out..
  10. What a concept Hudson--behave when you are out---should be behave like someone is watching you--cause they are. Just simple rules to live by--
  11. As stated before the piece is well written and this topic should be revisited once in a while. As a State Fire Instructor, I have informed all my classes about what the public thinks about the fire service when it comes to being inthe public eye and having a few drinks. I aggree with JohnnyVV have another shirt of some kind-- turn you shirt inside out. Just be aware that the public does indeed love us---but they also love to make us pay a price for making mistakes. Homer is also correct have a drink or 2 ---stay well with in your limits-- you know you can have fun with out drinks. Always remember the public is watching and does remember...in this case one bad apple does spoil the barrel. Have fun be safe dont drink and drive.
  12. heres the honest answer YOU WILL GET OPUT OF IT WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT Its a great course--I teach it as a step by step instruction into the fire service. what buildings are like, tools you need, how to use the tools, what dangers are out there, how to aviod the dangers or at least understand them a little better. Proper use of S.C.B.A. Knowing your equipment--haz-mat, confined space Theres a lot of reading, lot of testing but its the first course--everythgn is based on FF1
  13. from what I understand, the current list will stay in effect until they reach a certin point, again i believe thay have to offer the job to the 13th person on the current list, Then that list can expire and a new list can be established. There is a current mandate from the Federal Gov't Depatment of Justice to do this. this stems from a lawsuit. Who ever said that politics makes strange bedfellows is right. Good luck too all the canidates, no matter what happens or how it happens this is still the best job in the world.
  14. 2 new fire stations, new police station, new village hall, development of river front, with stores and condos, new fire apparatus, sounds great.
  15. timmy , Seth you guys were the best desipite drooling in codes. Take the experience and move foward. keep learning--- one day they will be working for you. of course I will be someplace llike Mertle Beach so dont forget to invite me.
  16. one down--- a whole career ahead-- now start studying for the promotion exams-- take a few courses at the Training Center-- a few at Montour Falls-- a few at the National Fire Academy- see what happend. get involved words of wisdom to live by--life is too short have fun- dont sweat the small stuff--and believe me it's all small stuff. go to work every day with a positive feeling that today you might made a difference in someones life. Seth you have made the right choices
  17. Seth guess who best of luck I know your training will never let you down-- We saw you strat out as a scared probie and develop into a tremendous asset to the Hartsdale Fire Department. I am glad to have been a small part of the experience. you have made my experience at the Academy an easy one, it was a pleasure believe me. Stay in touch with all your other classmates congratulations keep in touch with me too firecapt32
  18. 488 your showing your age like me--- like fine wine we get better with age. I do know it was a long night it was a valve that they had to shut off. some brave men did it cant remember their names I believe they were from General Motors and no FD personnel but im not really sure
  19. huzzie I was. It was a cool november night I was in ladder 38 Pocantico hook and ladder. we responded from headquarters with 5 or 6 members on the apparatus. I am not sure it might have been monthly meeting night. Rescue Hose responded and was hoooked to a hydrant and about to feed our ladderpipe. the ladder was raised and extended, myself and another firefighter were about to go and strap in the hose that ran to the ladder pipe. all of a sudden there was a silence that was deffining, everything stood still---- seemed like a hour but it was only seconds. A brillent flash of light and a roar ---we didnt know what the hell happened but we dove to the offside of the apparatus, I remember hanging on to the running boards and seeing nothing but fire from under the truck. Can remember looking at Rescue Hose and seeing the Driver( Fred Gross Sr) jumping in the enging and driving away. Our driver (Wiliam Kenyon) was still on the turn table. He recieved burns on his body. The only thing that saved the rest of us was the running boards. the whole side of the ladder was burned all the turn out coats/ all the boots/ all the equipment that was stored under the ladder--all burned in a matterof seconds. i am nnot sure where the other "North Tarrytown" apparatus were at the time of the incident, Union hose might have been blocked by the building and Columbis Hose might have been on Beekman Ave relaying. all I know is that it was one long night to remember--so many years ago.
  20. heres a thought when you are on this job or retire from it your chances of getting cancer are 20 to 25 % greater then the general public. Why in the world would you want to increase thoses chances even more by volunteering. Your health and safety is at risk. Towns and villages and cities pay a lot of money to carry insurance of firefighters, they should be demanding as part of employment that firefighters do not volunteer, just like major leagures have in their contracts about things that jepordize their career. just my thoughts
  21. Mabey he should have listed his training record on that shirt and someone might give a darn. the statement that fire is out to kill us is very true and fire dosent know the difference between paid and vol. but training sure plays a big part in everything. The better trained the firefighter is, the better prepared he will be for the dangers of the job. The better trained the firefighter is, the better protected the citizens of our communities will be. let no firefighter say his traing let him down.
  22. Lets bring the subject a little closer to home. how many departments have a policy that addresses this type of situation. How many stations have beverages in their soda machines that arent soda or for that matter a open tap in the rec rooms. so it is extreamly possible that this could happen a lot closer to home. What do we do to prevent this?? Should he be taken off the drivers rolls with a DWI or a DUI?? Your village, town or fire district have any regulations concering this matter??
  23. heres a new one I differ with ALS!!!! what we need to do is upgrade Montour Falls. There is pleanty of State owned land there. The Academy is already there for our useage. Building a new one in Albany is not advantagus fo r the fire service at this time. Asstchief 5 hours 2 hours whats the difference--its a nice drive in the country. !!!!! a few songs on the radio or CD player and your there.
  24. another loss that might have been preventable!! why do we insist on killing our selves--when some may be prevented. my thoughts and prayers go out to the department and the family.
  25. lets loook at it another way-- mabey they needed dicipline. we cannot run a fire service with out it. mabey they had enough of what was going on. mabey someone said- " what are you going to do to me supend me?" some pepole just have to push the enevelop to a point where something has to be done. I;m sure there is more to this. but there are 2 sides Officers have to control the firefighters--firefighter have to listen to the officers. otherwise who knows what can happen. just my thoughts
