  1. most fire station are eliminating the "fire pole" due to the location of them--if the pole is coming from a sleeping area to the apparatus floor it should be eliminated because of the exaust fumes. and nothing arong with the stairs
  2. good form moose lets hope some incident commanders copy it and use it
  3. 585 you are right there should be more responses from departments lets here it from incident commanders how is your FAST working?? tell us whats going on with it!!! what needs improving
  4. I am finding that F.D.'s around the county are useing other department for their FAST how long is the response time? finding that FAST is needed in the first 10-15 min of a incident. ALS is right the ratio is close to 12-1 look at the Pheniox time study on FAST you wil find it isnt so fast!! also noticing younger members on the FAST I am not sure this is a good idea-- just because you have the training--dosent mean your a "good firefighter" nothing is better then experience--training is just the first step. It is good to see many departments setting standards for their members THAT is a good thing m more shoud be doing it and those that dont--well chiefs it might be time to take a stand and remove them from mutual aid. I am sure as incident commanders you do not want or need untrained firefighters running all over your incident. after all if you invite them to your incident YOU and your municipiality are responsible fro them. just my word od caution to you incident commanders.
  5. Retirement age for F.D. is 62 with special plans or 70 maxium--unless your department files for a exemption. Hireing I believe there is no age--age discrimination laws are in effect.
  6. Remember 585--add the following: where do you get your F.S.A.T. from? How long do they take to get there? just some additional thoughts
  7. when will the madness stop!!! looks like a fd with too much money on their hands....hope they have a station big enough for it.
  8. first of all let me date my self--- first due 59 Peirsh ladder anad engine--second due 49- Aherans Fox--so ok I am old. Big is not always better but we must concider the safety of enclosed cabs--bigger motors --better pumps--more specilized equipment --places for air pacs. large diamater hoses. There are lots of things that might increase the size of our apparatus. but we must also concider where we are protecting-- size of the streets--ength of driveways- size of the fire station--can you imiagine buying a piece of fire apparatus and not having a place to put it!! ohh wait thats already been done. plus we have to concider who's driving our new million dollar tax payer apparatus--we must concider the people that are paying for the apparatus.
  9. HFD750 chin straps are like seat belts--you gotta use them or you might get hurt!!!
  10. How about this--- recently at a seminar--i was informed that most stand alone fast food places--ARE NOT INSURED FOR FIRE- cost prohibited--cost more then the building is worth. They do have liability though.
  11. I know you are recovering and have time on your hands ---- the state has ploicies concerning fire department---FF1=FF2-mandated training for career firefighters but itsHOME RULE the department dosent have to adheare to the training standards--unless something happens then watch out and see whos running for cover!!
  12. shows you whats important
  13. not a thing wrong with it i am proud to be in America where this can be done every day and night. If the Mayor let the firefighter bring the rig but to take hime out of the fire house, and make him walk to and from the flagpole is another story. To futher answer your question shac the firefighter that filed a grivience was a decorated viet nam vet so his loyalty was never in question. In my career we had a flag pole right out side the station door--- we raised it evey morning and lowered it every night--untill we put a light on it then it was out all day and all night. how are plans coming for the new hudson development??
  14. lets not get into that fight we are talking about cutting grass
  15. first of all x635 if you were that close and saw the station being built and didn't call me shame on you!!! I am only around the corner. yes that building is going to house ladder/Eng 78 big blue!! i do have to say in my own opinion mistakes were made by the village of Tarrytown but---so be it- we live with what we have. best of luck to 78 and I hope they have a long happy life in the new building. and to 77 also in their new building.
  16. cause no one really cares about taxies and things but when it comes to the Fire and ems we have the sacred cow syndrome-- no one is allowed to get involved unless its from the inside. home rule state. that is the biggest thing. ohh did i forget to mention that egos get in the way of progress. anad progress is very slow except when it come to apparatus then bigger is better.
  17. that is one lucky firefighter
  18. having the ciyt hall gear up and fight fires?? maybe they do that already-- we call them volunteers!!!
  19. To finish off ALS's response to you--the State does have a F.A.S.T. course and reccomendation not mandates for departments . but AHJ is the thing that counts. a department can set whatwever standards for their F.A.S.T. All department that use other departments as F.A.S.T. should know what they are getting and should traing togeather.
  20. it wasent long ago in a city in westchester that the mayor ordered the firefighters to walk down the street---block or so from the station and put up the flag every day and take it down every night. a grivience and ohh my someone fell during a snow storm and the order was recinded. I believe the city is still paying the firefighter that got hurt---shi* happend and officiale got to learn some learn the hard way---You cant fix stupid.
  21. First and formost i am glad the brothers are around to tell the story to their children and are safe. I haved watched the video as few and have come to the conclusion that the first guys was headed out.! I dont think he gave a shi* whether there was a ladder there or not. Second we here in New York teach a head first but with a foot locking and arm reach around so you can turn around on the ladder and come down in a safe fasion. useing the" calif" style is dangerous as we know a fire Captain broke his neck and died in a training exersice. be safe as possible
  22. I was inWashington D.C this weekend and got to se some pretty terrific sights.Very moving memorial day, but the best sight I saw was hundreds of vets on harleys in ROLLING THUNDER awsome. No we shouldnt forget our vets- shake their hands -wish them well and say thanks for doing the job when our country called..!!!
  23. dont forget to stop at Fiskill Wines and Liquors --- wine tasting all day on saturday!!!
  24. motto of the week "YOU CANT FIX STUPID"
  25. excellent topic what streets do I cross--- major intersections--right of way--"true emergency" do i need lights and sirens or a modify response? do I have the right location?? ask them to repete it. how about before you respond?? windows clean?? anything on the dash board? mirrows adjusted properly? seat adjusted porperly?
