  1. you are the man jody
  2. How many times do we have to hit in the head to find out WE ARE HELD TO A HIGHER STANDARD we have the peoples trust in our hands. We are the good guys, kids look up to us , what ever we do, where ever we go, what ever we say , (sounds like a song) people are looking at us seeing what we are doing. When you are a firefighter you are in the limelight like it or not, and if you dont like it--- join the ELKS you never see them get written up in the papers. when was the last time you saw a headline ELK steals gas!!!!
  3. 2 stats stick out 61 and over and responding Its time to make these stats go away. Driveing to and from alarm can be controled. The other it's time to let our older firefighters sit back and relax let the younger firefighters do the work.
  4. Waist straps on scba are like seats belt on apparatus--they should be worn. The reasoning behind the waist straps is to take the weight off your shoulders and place it where it belongs on your hips. Too many times we see firefighters pull the shoulder straps way too tight --they should be snug-waist belt put on with the buckle in line with your body, the clip should be near your belly button so you always know where it is in case you have to unbuckle in a emergency. Then the shoulder straps should be loosened just a little to allow the weight of the pack to settle on your hips.
  5. something easy and simple--have your guys go out and look at a building in the response area or take a few cam shots of buildings---throw them up on a power point and just ask the question "what if" guys get to see the building in the area from a different point of view. you wil be surprised how powerfull this is when they see their own building or house and get some input from others. you can get pictures of building under construction/ traffic patterns( that gas tanker that is filling at the station/ any rail road cars you get the idea.
  6. I agree with you guys they were line of duty deaths and should be included. having said that I do have issue with a 78yr old being a active firefighter in the state of New york. I have heard the arguments about someone in better shape then younger guys and all that other stuff still 78 is time for him to tell the tales of the old days to the younger members it is not the time to be riding/driving appatatus or active firefighting.
  7. BurnCare Foundation Inc has been the reciepient of some of East Fishkill's generosity in the past and we are most greatful. So come on out have a great day and support their worthy causes.
  8. having beeninvloved in contract negoitaions for a long time inthe fire service, One thing stands out--for the longest time we would not give in to any demand that had a decrease in health benifits attached to it. even if it ment a lesser of a raise.. someof us knew years ago that this was coming and tried to protect our firefighters. Then all of a sudden we saw a gradual"let the new guy pay for some of his health insurance" first it was for the first five years--then it was 10 % setting up a 2 tiered syatem that has to come around and bite you where the sun dont shine. We are paying the price now. Police and fire supported Spitizer from day one but the firght is with the locals and the local administrations. we must stand strong. i stood on a informational picket protesting the reduction of benifits for the fire service- we were sucesfull then and we shoud be sucesfull now
  9. It sounds like there will be a lot of survival training going on this fall. Just be safe doing it.
  10. syd your memory is pretty good I worked a second job with WESCO for many years delivering equipment/filling extinbguishers. making fire inspection. Bernie had a repore with all the fire chiefs in westchester for many many years. we would go out in the middle of the night to refill 02 bottles/ and air packs. WESCO was one of the first fire extinguisher business in the county/ they were one of the first to inspect the hood systems for kitchens. WESCO had the origional contract for HURST tools. I can remember clearly going to many department and doing demonstrations on the "new rescue tool" JAWS OF LIFE thanks for letting me take a trip down memory lane did the extinguisher have my initials ont he tag??
  11. lets see speed-lack of training-no seat belt-leads to another firefighter death---how many times and how many ways do you need to hear 25% of all firefighters deaths are the results of driving!!!! we go from driving a suv to driving a 20 ton fire apparatus--of course things are going to be differeent. well louder this time 25%OF ALL FIREFIGHTER DEATHS ARE FROM MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS.
  12. Congratulations to the new hire's have a great academy
  13. Seth is that a Pic of the old Rescue Hose Eng 85 NTFD i see there? . It looks like it is in pretty good shape.
  14. that would be the same one doc-- very impressive resume I must say---he does bring a few things to the table. I have known dick since i was 18 yrs old . We go back a long way in the fire service. I can actualy say i have been "on the line" in a few jobs with him in our younger days. The academy is in good hands and all "probies" will get a good fire education both physically and triditionally, they better know how to salute and Yes sir no sir. Again good luck to all of them in both classes YFD and Westchester
  15. God I have to be getting old I remember that fire coming in on mutual aid--relieving the Fairview brothers on the fire floor so they could get some needed rest. I remember them taking a short break and coming back in to finish the job.
  16. The Directror of the Academy is none other then State Instructor Dick Nagle former head of the fire science program at Montour Falls. All probies are in good hands. I wil be teaching : Incident safety Officer Intro to fireofficer fire oficer one safety and survival at the training center nights starting in the fall
  17. Hudson I thought I would see you at the Boat Club last night celabrating your 20 year!!! to all the probies in both classes you have great instructors all the way around. Best of luck!
  18. hudson 20 years huh congratulations wait does that include the stop over in Greenville?
  19. All of those classes will be offered in the fall and winter. I promise!
  20. The english language is a wonderful thing. You can probaly tell somebody to go someplace and to do something to themselves and still be very gentle about it. So, barring profane language is fine with me.
  21. once again god has called a firefighter to his side--way too early--god bless rest in peace
  22. I do love the line "city paid emergency staffers" its a well written article. we should be moving foward in the 21st century. firefighting is a dangerous field of work--lets not take chances with our lives and the lives of other people.
  23. I just hope the money gets to the right people and not going in to a general fund. thats one of the reasons that I run a independant foundation not affiliated directly with the Burn Center. BurnCare can work directly with the staff and the paitents. The Hospital cannot use any of the Foundations funds. Just make sure the money donated to the Center is going to go and do the things you want it to do. I hope they have a sucsessfull night
  24. Congratulations to the new administrator. I am sure he can use all the help he can get from Fire departments across the State.
  25. Defining public monies as any money that is collected from the public-through taxes or donations. Example's Department fund raising is public monies. taxes collected is public monies.
