  1. JetPhoto brings up a good question and it should have mixed results. Should Santa be driven around on apparatus that is owned by the taxpayers? Where do or should we draw the line?
  2. What about thoses taxpayers that might say"santa dosent represent all the holiday's"
  3. unless there is something in the contracts or in the job requirements-- passing national certification is not part of the 229hours required bythe State of New york Passing CPAT is a requirement however.
  4. Quick identification of these buildings come froms Chiefs and Officers that are on top of their game. A mistake from the Elmsford FD Chief might have been costly, but the only cost now is the rebuilding of the homes, not hospital cost for injured firefighters. The handleing of that fire was a great job by every one invloved. In the simplest terms they got there--got there safely did their jobs--did it well and everyone went home to their loved ones. no one can ask for more from the fire service.
  5. I was informing my IFO class last night 25% of firefighter deaths are from accidents. These are preventable deaths. These firefighters were lucky. they understood the valus of seatbelts. This comes from good training programs-good officers-and maybe apparatus that wont move unless the person is seated and belted in.
  6. good news is always in order
  7. Lets not get carried away here. Stupid yes -controable yes-preventable yes. I am in no way defending the actions of that fire department but history has shown us one thing we are doomed to repeate it. Maybe "thats the way we always do it" applies here. Maybe for the last 10 years the Department has burned a house and it was a great training exersize. This time they werent so lucky--well in a way they were only one person got hurt. Have they learned form the mistakes thats the important question? NFPA 1403 is now the bible for the fire service when it comes to live burns. We inthe fire service are so shall I dare to say dumb we had to have the State legislature make laws to protect us from our selves. talk about fixing stupid Have a good day all
  8. Congratulations Jimmy its a well deserved promotion to a great person. FLSP is a State mandated program where all first line must attend a 4 week program--All career firefighters that get promoted must attend by law. The program is conducted by FDNY--upon graduation of FLSP the Officer has level 1 instructors certificiation and many other certifications.. Its a great program anad has beenin existence since mayby 1985
  9. This topic comes up from time to time- years ago when Feiner was just elected he formed a committee to look into the consolidation of the Fire Districts, I sat on the committe for almost 2 1/2 years spining our wheels. one of the biggest problems was, what to do with the "fire protection districts" it seems that Greenburgh pays a whole lot of money , one million is a good number to start with,to the villages (Elmsford, Tarrytown, Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, Irvington) to protect areas that are actually in the unincorporated Town of Greenburgh. theses towns then distribute money to the Fire Departments (not all of it they keep a portion for the general fund). This wasent the only probelm--equalization of taxes was another, administering fire department contracts was another, how to change the voting structure a real biggie, comissioners to a town board, so the committe sat and did nothing but spin wheels. Will consolidation save money for the taxpayers of unincorportated Greenburgh it might only if the whole unincorporated ares in included not just the 3 combo fire districts.
  10. I can only guess that his uniform allowence hasn't been approved yet!!
  11. WE should all be greatfull for the sacrfices that has been make to make this a great country. Many men and women have defended this Country so we can enjoy the freedoms that we have today. If you are a vetern THANK YOU if your not a vetern--go find one and please thank them. In the fire service since 9-11 we have often seen a phrase "all gave some--some gave all" this is true about our veterens.
  12. according the the busines association most retailers do over 40 % of their entire yearly gross income during the last quarter of the year. so its a no brainer that the holiday season is extended as long as possible.
  13. I am sure that at the end the projects will be delt with ==one step at a time that the way to handle tough projects-- there are a lot of prople that have faith in you and your ability to handle things.
  14. As a good friend oftern says"YOU CANT FIX STUPID" but this goes beyond stupid into the dangerous catagory. Not making a hasty decision here all the facts arent in just yet but it it seems like a police matter.
  15. Sounds and looks llike a good move for 107 hope he can deliver for you guys.
  16. Partyrock are you saying you take a helmet off your head---hold it up inthe heat just to "bake" it plase tell me what the meaning of that is? I have been training firefighters for a while now--ran 2 Fire Academy's- Certified level 2 nationaly -attended many State/Natonal seminars on training and have never had a Instructor or seen demonstrated a "bake" your helmet day.
  17. ajsbear answer to your question===== no one carries them if I am wrong and a department carries them---get rid of them give them to a musem---sellthem as antiques on e bay but do not use them.
  18. Its not a matterof being responsible SPFC its the fact that you are consuming alcohol in a public building. We dont allow our police to "kick back"after a criminal chase and down a few cold ones, do we ?? Can we bring a few cold ones to the library?? I dont think so. So let's establish once and for all: Alcohol does not belong in a fire station.
  19. firebuff13 maybe you should be taking a few more classes and get some experience under your belt before you start to say what is a joke.
  20. I know ther are a lot of law enfrocement in here---how manny of you volunteer as cops?? not the same?? why not?? if i had free police protection my taxes would be down--- that alone shouldl shut this topic off
  21. CTTT--The IAFF is telling their memebers in a indirect way--if you are hurt doing volunteer assigements- you might not be protercted in your Career department. Thats the short term--long term if you come down with any lung or resp problems/ or cancers the same might apply. What should happen is employers of career firefighters should tell their employees--no volunteer firefighting. but they wont do that. Soo they leave it up to the IAFF . There arre many examples that can occur so dont take "it cant happen to me approach" Theh IAFF has no authority to disaband any Volunteeer organization.
  22. Edgewater Park was just at the Westchester fire Training Center doing some training a few weeks ago. so they are alive and well.
  23. Party --- you maybe be able to teach stupid but as a friend of mine is in the habit of saying"you cant fix stupid" man or woman. Its a job if woman can handle it, do the things that have to be done, then welcome to the brotherhood
