Moose what a great idea. It has been thought of before and has met with a lot of resistance from a lot of different places up to and including FASNY. New York State tried to get firefighter 1 and 2 National certification here in Westchester at least twice in the last few years---only to be cancelled--lack of participents. As long as New York State allows AHJ in this matter and there are no teeth in the laws the fire service will have a back seat. As long as Fire departments in the State allow firefighters to enter building with a lackof training and allow Officers to be elected in antiquaited processes there will cintinue to be a lack of foward thinking. This isnt the fire service your father or mine belonged to. Ther are way too many issues that firefighters/officers/chiefs have to be aware of and informed of, and many of them are like mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed sh--. There are other Fire departments that are way ahead and should be commended for their progress. The problem might be with municiple officials not wanting or not understanding what can and or will happen whe something goes wrong. Moose thank for letting me rank lets hear from otheres on how we can really move the fire service ahead in the State

This Detective Sargarent is one of the most respectred police officers that I know. If any of you live in Pleasentville please take a stand with him and get his name cleared. Write the newspaper --write the Village-- write the Police chief--stand with this officer he is truly one of the nicest guys you want to meet. thank you

That sounds like a Fire Department that has it togeather and has an eye on the future. kudos IFD --I am sure there are other Departments that might have the same or close but I am also sure there are many Departments that dont come close to that kind of training. Next question for IFD is let us know the qualifications for being an Officer I am sure other departments would love to hear what it takes.

There are a few Westchester Fire Chiefs with a lot of time under their belt as Chiefs of Department. It means that there are a few Fire Officers waiting i the wings for them to retire.

ALS--Bobby thats about as close of an answer that you can find regarding NYS and the Fire Service. As far as i know it is still AHJ setting the rules and regulations UNTIL something happens and the stuff hits the fan and goes all over the place. Then PESH anad OSHA come into the game . There's a current law suite about the Chiefs upstate where the 2 firefighters died 2 years ago. They are saying the chiefs didnt have enough background on building construction and also a lack of command training.
-
Great question to ask and a great answer from "585" also include NFPA requirements for Safety Officers and NFPA quaification for Fire Officers. but as stated in other areas of this fourm the AHJ has the right to determine the standards for their department.

I may be wrong but as for the training center the question asked is because of" live fire "requirements placed on the training center by the State. Authority haveing jurisdiction is the governing body and sets standards for their department.! Having said that any department can set the requirement as they see fit. However if you are involved in State or County training then you have to meet Their requirements. again thats why the questions are asked. The state of New York has no power to inforce the standards and untill that is done the fire service in the State will be all over doing what they want when they want. departments that are doing mutual aid might be required to adhear to the department recieving the mutual aid's requirement. If lets say take the Elmsford' Red Fox diner last week--sorry Syd- Elmsford may have a policy set by them that says all firefighters that are going into IDLH must have FFI safety/survival, then Elmsford may have the right to ask the question? do your firefighters meet that requirement.? if they dont then Elmsford dosent have to let them participate in the mutual aid. We in the fire service have to get ouor act togeather and set some standards that we all can live with or one day somthing will happen. just my thoughts

Tarrytown and elmsford are municiple fire departments, incorporated villages. They are contracted to provide fire protection to unincorportatred parts of the Town of Greenburgh. the unincorporated sections of Greenburgh do not have Fire Commissioners, at least that I am aware of. They are set by the Town of Greenburgh. I believe that Ardsly, Hastings, Irvington also share in the unincorporated Town of Greenbburgh fire protection areas.

Ihave to say that I thought the Command structure was set up properly.the command post had the incident commander there. the EMS was there, sleepy hollow police were there- Con Ed was there. Field com coordinators were there. it worked well. Things worked well- the Village Mayor was at the command post. Things went well- the radio traffic was controlable. The building(s) were sectured off each had a operations chief. The fire didnt cooperate but thats normal. EMS had a tent and ambulances set up . It looked like things fell into place. as they say the system worked.

I was there listening to him whata great talk he gave and got a standing ovation from the huge crowd of firefighters. So jack when you see him tel him he has some fans and tell him if his nephew is ever around i would lilek to meet hime too.
-
2 quick points Seth- i still have your pump test scores. Barry -I had a similar incident at Anacanda Wire in Hasting many years ago -pump operator was drafting out of the Hudson ---called the chief to tell him that he was pumping the river dry and needed a longer drafing hose.... needless to say the hudson has T.I.D.E. too. It is always good to go over things

as long as no one gets personal and things are on a level playing field, we should be able to discuess anything to do with the fire service on this site. Resonse time--manpower-training-equipment are all in the loop. constructive dialog is important to the fire service. it moves us foward. opinions are also a good thing just as long as they are opinions and not bashing. Personal feelings and personal attacks should not be tolerated. but as humans we are all allowed to vent once in a while. just as we are allowed to make mistakes--just as long as we learn from them and dont repeat them. Having said all the pompus sh*t --keep the fourm open and honest-- back things up with facts and figures--dont take everything as a challange, have some fun learn how others think respect each other. We just might learn things that help the fire service.

Sorry moose they kind of blended togeather there for a while

That was heated and very interesting to read--heres aquestion to both you union officials-- In New York State the career firefighters have 207-a benifits, i'm sure I dont have to explain them to you guys but heres the question one of your firefighters gets hurt at mutual aid fire --one a career firefighter working as a member of the department. the other is a career firefighter responding as Volunteer department. god forbid they both break a leg and cannot return to their chosen profession--what happenes to them?? Want another question what happens when either of them or both of them come down with --lets say lung cancer-- where do the benifits come from? just so me questions not bashing any one or critizing anything just interested in the response

Incident safety officers course is a must. This will give you basic insight into what needs to be done by a safety officer, and it give you a chance to find out what other departments are doing.

let me be up front when I make mistake I am not afraid to admit it and own up to it. After a very pleasent conversation with Chief Nakin of the Irvinigton Fire Department I now understand fully the frustration that he and the department is going through. They and East West had preformance bonds included inthe specs for the apparatus. FIRE DEPARTMENT DID NOTHING WRONG. Knowing JP for a while now, I know that he and his committee did the right thing. Irvington is one of the Department in this county that are way ahead of the curve. All of their member should be proud to belong to that Department.

does any one think that the FD is to be held at least a little accountable in this matter??
-
The Coordinator is notified of any mutual aid fires in the Battalion and is expected to respond to the location if the mutual aid departments go to work. The Coordinators are the eyes and ears of the County, they are there for the Department having the fire --to get additional mutual aid - to the scene or to cover quarters--the C&O team, what ever the Department needs or wants. They are there to assist the Incident Commander so that the IC can concentrate on the fire and run the incident. The Coordinators have a direct radio conection to 60 control ( the batallion trunk radio) so it makes communication easier. One les thing the IC needs to worry about. Hope this answers some of the questions. I believe there is one opening in Batallion 12

I have to agree with ALS watch your members and see what is happening with them. Then you can review and proceed from there. Also keep things simple-- air comsumption drills-- survival skills- hose placements-simple ladder work-- ladder the fire house up one side down the other. Go look at buildings under construction--that way you get to see the building before it gets buttoned up and things get burried. Im sure you have looked at front of buildings go look at the back yards. count the number trucks going by the station or on main street that have placards then look them up that aught to scare you a little

Oh well let me get my .02 in here having seen the pics once or twice now yes i had to see them a few times. There are a few things that we can comment on.First use the pics as a learning tool not a department bashing. Safety starts with the Officers---All officers should lead by example --having said that-- there in no reason for a chief officer to be without full ppe and no reason for him to be on the line. Firefighters learn by the example that is set by their leaders and the standard set by their department. All departments should have SOP'S SOG'S and they should be followed. Look at the pics and learn form them--- ALL departments make mistakes at times--good deparments learn from mistakes and try never to repeat them. Set safety standards high in your department and adheard to them.

Both good sites i have posted Vententer search in all my classes so students can go to them

I to remember ladder 4 stuck in the mud---apparatus driver gave me the now famous words "dont worry Capt I can get it in there!!! " response from Capt 32 "You sure??" answer "i can make it fit like a glove no problem" four hours later a front end loader had to pull us out of the mud. It didnt stop us from working the fire. Adapt and ovecome.
