  1. even if everyone is covered in one way or another--- just the fact that they have to justify themselves in a court of law and the public can really get a glimpse of the true working of the fire department should be enough to scare firefighters and officers.
  2. Capt Demps--short-- sweet -right to the point, and correct as usual.
  3. Seems the logical thing is 1 .5 line or 1.75 line is to get water first--make sure you have water. Get all members on the same side.kinks can drop gpm's by 20 to 30 to 50 depending on how many kinks you have, so be careful of restricted water flow.
  4. Wish him a full and speedy recovery.
  5. Good luck---another party in the future??
  6. I gotta agree with ajs I hope they are safe and sound and very bored-and above all come home safely soon
  7. What a concept OLDGUY--wish it was that easy 4 men 24/7 has to equate to at least 12 firefighters plus 4 bosses plus vacation coverage/and other time off ie sick time holidays comp time. There a lot that has to go into it.not saying that its impossible just difficult
  8. Just my quick thoughts for consolidation in Westchester---too many egos--too many kingdom's--too many kings---
  9. I gotta ask who came back?? Congratulations to the new LT's and the new probationary firefighters--good luck to them in FLSP and good luck to the probies.
  10. Is that the the Chief marching there??
  11. The Westchester Career Chiefs do run the Academy, it is with their approval that a Director is made. The OFPC issues the certificates of completion of any State Courses that are conducted during the training period ie FF1 FF2 pumps ect. The State also issues a certificate for the completion of the 229 training hours. The County provides the facility and any thing else that the academy may want ie helping to arrange apparatus or additional training instructors.
  12. Somehow i don't think $200,000.00 will be enough with pay and benefits.
  13. When a probationary firefighter is being taught at any academy or any in house classes by any SFI/CFI or MFI they must be taught to the fire service industry standard. I also believe that any program taught whether its in house or at a academy- the courses must meet or exceed the Fire Service standard, and the instructors must also meet that standard. There is a place in the academy for local sop's and sog's. The academy's makes a well rounded firefighter not a seasoned veteran , it gives the firefighter a little of everything from pumps to ladder work to rescue tech to haz mat and much much more. Whether you go to Montour Falls, Westchester Career or in house for your training the probationary firefighter must receive a minimum of 229 hours of diverse training.
  14. Barry raises some interesting and valid points. The academy is the Westchester Career Chiefs Fire Academy ,not the State of New York fire Academy or the Westchester County Fire Academy. Any career department can choose to send their probationary firefighters to Montour Falls and only pay the cost up there, the career chiefs here in Westchester wanted something closer I guess its more expensive doing things here. No matter where they are trained they have to meet or exceed the State standard.
  15. The cost has been rising but its still the best you can get period.
  16. Gary has taken a job in the State of Flordia withe the Palm Beach Fire Department. He is missed by his fellow fire instructors.
  17. One of my instructors once told me-you can put any fire out with a garden watering can---once in the begining stage and the other in the smouldering stage. Its the inbetween times that we earn our money and do our job.
  18. Great photos---you can really tell how far we have advanced in the fire service since 1980-- notice the coats, the boots and the lack of air packs we have come along way again great photos--its nice to see them to remind us of what it was like "back in the day"
  19. With out getting to deep in this--the IAFF has their convention--each local is given information on what will be taking place at the convention. That information is given to every local from the 5 man local to the 10,000 man local. Each and every depegate has the right and oppourtunity to get up and to speak on the convention floor. so every memebr of the IAFF is represented at the convention. If you local doesnt go or cannot afford to go ,you can give your votes to a local that is going and with that, give them instructions on how to vote. That being said all IAFF member in some way have a say in what the Union does and in what direction it goes. The IAFF is a labor organization and a well respected one at that s-o of course it does leand a little to the left but thats ok. If you look at the IAFF web site you can see the comparasions that they are useing to make the decisions on endorsments. Are they right not all the time-but they are there for the members protection, safety and help. We are in a Country that allows us to have so much freedom in who we choose and how we go about choosing the leaders of our nation so make your decisions on election day with your head and your heart.
  20. Seth -you made even me laugh at that comment -- hard to ponder that ALS could be speachless.
  21. Let me add my congratulations to Tommy---well deserved--Tom is very knowledgeable--has a certin way with words that will make you feel warm and fuzzy all over, yet get his point drilled into you. All around nice guy when you get throught the rough stuff, I am glad i can call him a friend and a "brother" in this fire service world we live in.
  22. We wish Noah the best. I am sure he knows the problems first hand. lets hope he takes control and command fast and establishes himself as a Commissioner with authority but works with class and diginity to restore Mount Vernon to the top of the class in Fire Protection. The citizens deserve it and so do the member of the Department. May god blass him and all the members of FDMV.
