  1. The way I understand it is it is not Metro North's space (although I could have been misinformed). The new concourse is to fall under the authority of LIRR.
  2. According to the article NYSP issued six tickets including driving recklessly. At least we know that these charges can't be plea bargained (assuming they makes it to the court).
  3. Yes. Realistically, the line that most of the move was on is not the Beacon Line but the HRRC (Housatonic Railroad) on the Connecticut side. Grumpy, were those consists going to Put Jct? It was my understanding they were going to Stamford.
  4. Per the article there were 2 others laid off where one was hired by Larchmont and another was reinstated back to White Plains following a retirement.
  5. The reason that the MNR NY stops and NYC transit fares were raised are quite simple. The MTA has direct control over the NY fares (with approval by the NY State legislature). The MTA can not raise the Connecticut fares as they don't have any control over them. The Connecticut fares are regulated by the CDOT (State of Connecticut). This is the reason that the Port Chester and Rye fares are as low as they are. When the latest fare hikes were proposed, these fares were due to be higher. Instead they kept them the same as the neighboring Greenwich fares. Not only were the CT fares not raised this last year but they haven't been raised the last two or three times the NY fares have been raised. Last year Connecticut was talking about raising their fares once the M8's start going into revenue service. It is my speculation that when they do get raised it's going to be steep. Time will tell.

  7. I agree with all the other replies. Very little of the issues with the M8 delays (or the chronic breakdowns of the aging M4 and M6's) are directly related to Metro North. This is mostly the result of Connecticut DOT waiting too long to purchase the new cars. Once the cars started testing there were numerous flaws that had to be worked out. In my opinion Metro North did the best they could given a bad situation. Now that the new fleet is slowly coming into revenue service it should be interesting if Connecticut is going to raise their fares as stated last summer. The New York fares have been raised about three times since Connecticut's have been raised. It is my speculation that when Connecticut's do get raised it's going to be steep.

  10. No, Star Gas that responded is a family owned propane company on Fulton St in Poughkeepise. The Petro, Star Gas you are thinking of is no longer in existence. First (the Petro) Star Gas was sold by Petro and then it was bought out by Inergy Propane in Kansas City, MO. The local office of Inergy is DBA Coleman Propane with an office in Washingtonville, NY and satellite yard in on Old Manchester Rd in Poughkeepsie, NY.
  11. Excellent pics, thanks for sharing. Maybe if the M8's were in service the catenaries wouldn't have gotten ripped down by one train and the pant's get ripped off another train Saturday evening in Greenwich. As a result the whole New Haven Line was only paralyzed for about 6 hours and finally back to normal after about 10 hours.
  12. All the tankers are very nice but I have one question specifically involving Union Vale's. While I notice there are two 2 1/2 inch direct tank fills on the rear, I don't notice a LDH fill other than what could be through the pump. Is there a reason that there is no LDH direct tank fill?
  13. Unfortunately this is a sign of the times with government agencies or public authorities. While currently I do not have to pay anything towards medical benefit premiums, with the union contract expiring at the end of the month and a huge budget deficit looming over Metro North's and The MTA's head, I'm expecting to have to pay with the new contract when that gets ratified (my estimate is in three years).
  14. The valve that could be turned off on most propane tanks is the service valve. This is what the gas line is hooked up to. On the underground tanks the service valve is part of the "multi valve" which comprises of the service valve, fill valve, vapor return valve and relief valve. Although I was not at this fire I (from experience) can assure you that it was more then just the service valve that was compromised. In situations with underground tanks it is usually the relief valve that is compromised. The relief valve is made out of brass so breaking it off the rest of the valve assembly takes relatively little effort. Once ignited, the best course of action is to baby sit it and let it burn off.
  15. I don't understand why dispatch would have thought otherwise. Per the audio of the incident: Chief: 712 to dispatch, thank you very much, cancel all units except Long Ridge to this call. Dispatch: Are you on the scene sir? Chief: Negative, we have enough guys. Cancel everybody but Long Ridge. That's twice in two separate transmissions that he said cancel everyone but Long Ridge. How could anyone know that he meant only cancel the city?????
  16. In other industries there are trailers with pumps that take there power with a drive shaft. The operator has to connect the shaft prior to pumping. I don't know if it would would specifically with at fire pump at high rpm's.
  17. I have friends that are lineman for Central Hudson and when ever they go mutual aid to other power companies, they get paid their own rate (overtime included). It appears that some of these companies (in the pictures) are electrical contractors as opposed to public utilities. With that said, my guess is they make less. Just out of curiosity, why were Pikes buckets raised in the first few pictures?
  18. Cargo trains are not just limited to the west side of the Hudson. CSX runs cargo regularly on the Hudson (and New Haven) lines regularly also. In addition to Metro North and CSX, Amtrak also has trains running regularly along the Hudson and New Haven lines.
  19. Value wise I don't think it's worth the switch. Although FIOS says they will give you good deals for there Triple Play package, the reality is that not everything is included in their package as it is in Cablevision's. FIOS phone does not include all the features that Cablevision does. You can get them, about it's extra $$$ per month. I also like the idea of the unlisted number you get with Cablevison. It's extra to have an unlisted # with Verizon. FIOS "basic" internet is slower than Cablevisions basic internet. Again, to get higher speed, you pay more. Lastly FIOS TV requires either a box or converter for every TV hooked up to it. Cable does not. After everything was said and done it was about $25.00 per month additional per month to match Verizon FIOS up with Cablevision. The only complaint I would have is with their customer phone support. They are pretty much clueless. If it's not on the script they are reading from, they don't know. On the other hand, their field tech are great.
  20. I considered getting FIOS last summer when they finally came to my neighborhood. Unfortunately they couldn't compete price wise with Cablevision.
  21. I feel your pain, I like going there on my dinner break. I go to the one E44th between Lex and 3rd or the one on 42nd across from Bryant Park. I also like Baja Fresh Mexican Grill, Third Ave, between 45th and 46th.
  22. Once you take and pass the tests there's a fee for the drivers license. Last summer I renewed my class B and it was $168.00. If you get the hazmat endorsement it's an additional $140.00 for the background checks. Since I renewed I believe the license fees went up due to the MTA debacle last year.
  23. Don't look for the M8's to be running anytime soon. The first four pair aren't going to be road tested until all four arrive from Baltimore (via CSX directly to New Haven). This won't be until at least March. At that time three to six month of rigorous testing will be done at the newly built acceptance facility at the New Haven Yard.
  24. Left work at midnight in midtown Manhattan and there was about 8 inches. Got off the train in Poughkeepsie at 2AM and there was less than an inch.
  25. I have just found out that CT does have a law very similar to NY regarding assaulting a train crew member. CT Public Act 09-191 states it is a Class C felony punishable by 1 - 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine per incident.
