  1. Alot of frequencies are the same for multiple departments. New Fairfield has a frequency where, depending on weather conditions, you can hear FDNY Staten Island units getting sent out. Its NF's Hi-Band Fire Channel 2 or the OEM channel, can't remember which.
  2. I know what you mean. I started volunteering in West Haven, told them I've used tankers, and people told me "Wow, it must be hard to put out fires that way." Not really. Tankers are perfectly useful if you practice using them. Generally, departments who don't practice shuttle operations lose houses. Departments who practice them can effectively stop structure fires with minimal property damage. One day, when the water systems fail...
  3. Congrats man!
  4. Date: 1/3/08 Time: Approx 0530 Hours Location: Stadley Rough Road Frequency: 46.24 Units Operating: Danbury FD (3 Career Engines, 1 Career Truck, 2 Volunteer Engines, 1 Volunteer Squad,) Danbury Health Systems/BSI (EMS), Danbury Fire Marshal's Office Description Of Incident: W/F in a 1 story ranch. Fire started in the wall. K/D'd with (1) 1 3/4" line and several Dry Chem extinguishers per Captain Bernie Meehan (I/C) Writer: Sage Vigiles
  5. I know alot of you NY guys don't get the Connecticut news. But a couple months ago WTNH did an investigation into Shelton High School's renovations, which did NOT include sprinkler systems. I don't know about NY, but in CT, the code states that any existing structure that is renovated must be brought up to code. So the building SHOULD have had sprinklers installed. Only the FM didn't require them, and claimed that the school got an exception granted by the State FM. Which did not happen. He then changed his story to claim that they didn't NEED an exception. Which is not true. Well, what do you know. A 3-Alarm working fire in the high school today. Shelton, Derby, Ansonia, Trumbull, and others responded. I can damn-near guarantee that several heads are going to roll on this one, rightfully so it sounds.
  6. 141 Brothers and Sisters in blue died in the Line of Duty in 2008, as compared to 181 in 2007. Unfortunately, traffic accidents are still listed as the #1 cause of Police Officers' deaths. Hopefully we can get that number even lower in 2009. Stay Safe
  7. Date: 12-26-08 Time: Approx 1900 Hours Location: 193 Clapboard Ridge Road, IFO Congregation B'nai Israel Synagogue Frequency: 46.24 Units Operating: Car 30, E25, E22, E23, T1, T2 (4 guys ordered in off-duty to respond), E4 (Vol.), E14 (Vol.) Sq-6 (Vol.), Tanker 10 (Vol.), Tanker 11 (Vol.), Tanker 14 (Vol.), Fire Police, DPD, Danbury Health Systems (Ambulance), Canteen from Miry Brook FD (Vol.), Fire Marshal, Description Of Incident: Working fire in an unoccupied home. Writer: SageVigiles Fire K/D'd relatively quickly, but alot of help was needed to overhaul. Drove by it this afternoon, alot of damage done to the Bravo side. Apparently the house was vacant at the time, though the family who owns it did arrive. News-Times reported it was called in by a retired Scarsdale FF passing by.
  8. Rest in Peace Major.
  9. Yeah, if these doctors had actually SEEN how these scumbags were acting BEFORE they got pinched, perhaps they would change their tunes. Maybe these doctors need to go on ride-alongs with some of the area's finest.
  10. I know in New Fairfield, all new developments are required to build an underground tank for water supply. Its relatively inexpensive for them considering the profits they make on these monster homes.
  11. Date: 12/24/08 Time: Location: Kohler faucet/sink factory in the village of Kohler, Wisconsin Departments: Kohler FD, Description: Roof Collapse of the Kohler faucet/sink factory, victims and entrapment unknown ATT, news crews en route. Links: Writer: SageVigiles Got this from MSNBC, waiting for more info, I'll update when I get more.
  12. Izzy, I am inclined to agree with your statement. As someone who has tried both, I must tell you that New Haven pizza is to die for.
  13. What's causing all these problems? Improper spec'ing of apparatus? A shop with less-than-stellar mechanics? Ineffective policies regarding apparatus maintenance/inspection? Lack of funding for maintenance? I'm not pointing fingers, I just would like to get an idea.
  14. ALS had it right. Should be under DHHS (Dept. of Health and Human Services) not FEMA. It specifically states its not for emergency purposes. But whatever, as long as it works I suppose.
  15. True it is. For some reason people don't understand that 4 wheel drive doesn't matter when all four wheels have no traction... You could have 8 wheels, but if none of them have grip, you are going to have an unpleasant trip.
  16. This situation has continued to deteriorate for a few months now. If we don't pass the budget this Wednesday, it could be it for the district. Chief of Department Mossaro said this week to WFSB news that the district may have to "close its doors" if the crisis isn't taken care of. The union, the paid department, the volunteers, and UNH have all been trying to get out the vote, but a group of taxpayers seem to be determined to subvert the fire district. This group has come out publically saying that they wouldn't mind the district to go under because the other districts would cover for us, and then they would get away without paying taxes. Unfortuately, people believe this BS (it isn't true, neither the city nor the other districts are required to provide services to the district.) By the end of next week, the department could be looking at layoffs or shutting down the paid department altogether.
  17. Code enforcement has absolutely nothing to do with your ISO rating. Its rediculous, yes, but ISO doesn't care how you prevent fires, just how you are capable of stopping them. Also, you probably won't see regionalization because of the "Home Rule" doctrine. Nobody wants to give up their proverbial piece of the pie.
  18. Budget passed! 208 yes to 190 no. VERY close vote, very packed house...
  19. So we're going to cut the unit that prevents fires from happening or being worse than they could be, then we're cutting the guys who are gonna have to put out the fires, which are now worse due to a lack of code enforcement. Outstanding...
  20. DOT is reporting that Route 7 is closed in both directions at the Housatonic River. Estimated to be closed for 7 to 8 hours. Good God, that cannot be pretty. Route 7 at rush hour on a normal day is like trying to commute through the Battle of Midway, I can only imagine what it looks like now.
  21. Cutting the fire prevention bureau? Thats unfortunate, as FP bureaus are usually the most understaffed units in an FD anyway, given the amount of workload they have. Sad day for the brothers in Yonkers, but I guess its a sign of the times. Good luck to everyone down there.
  22. Glad to hear you are alright 50-65. Good job to Middle Hope and the multiple EMS agencies on what must have been an extremely hectic situation. Newburgh-Beacon ain't exactly the calmest crossing sometimes.
  23. 129 ambulance attendants? It is unfortunate that they did not mention the total number of EMTs in America, AMR alone has almost 20,000, which works out to be about .6%. Lets assume, just for arguements' sake, there are 200,000 EMTs in the country. Thats .06%. Granted, even that number is higher than any of us want it to be, but the fearmongerers over at MSNBC are using it to try to instill fear and panic. I hate the media sometimes.
