In New Fairfield we'll generally use our ambulance. We used to use Danbury Volunteer Squad 7 (Lighting/Air truck, it was a walk in rescue) which gave room for the EMTs to do multiple evaluations and let people hang out and warm up, but they have a walk-around now, so that ends that. I suppose we could use Danbury Volunteer Canteen 13 for food/drinks and continue to use the ambo's for evaluations, or call in an actual bus from HART or the schools.

I'm gonna agree with JD here. I wear the waist strap simply because it takes weight off your shoulders and back. (And because my fire 1 instructor flipped out on anyone that didn't, thereby indoctrinating me) Most of the practical reason that its there is to prevent back injuries, which are the more likely than not the cause of most Fire Service early medical retirements. Do I wear it everytime? No, but I do most of the time and I probably should all of the time. If a firefighter never wears it, he shouldn't be at all surprised when he develops back problems later in his career.

Anybody know why I'm still having issues?

Date: 1-16-09 Time: Approx 1800 Location: 7 New Street Frequency: 46.24 Units Operating: Car 1 (Chief of Dept), Car 30 (Shift Commander), Fire Marshal, T1, T2, E21, E22, Sq. 23, E23, E24, E25, E26, Vol. Sq. 6, Vol. Engine/Tank-10, Volunteer Engine 12, Fire Police, All tankers citywide (10's, 11's, 12's, 13's, 14's), Volunteer Engine 9, Volunteer Canteen 13 Danbury Health Systems EMS (Multiple Units and Supervisors), Multiple Danbury PD Units and supervisors, Bethel FD (1 tanker to scene, Bethel FD to cover Danbury), Ridgefield FD (to cover) Description Of Incident: Working fire in an apartment building DIRECTLY next to New St. Fire Headquarters Writer: SageVigiles Article at www.newstimes.com I went down to take pictures, should have them up tomorrow. UPDATE/Edit: Initial Assignment was MOST LIKELY the following, given the area, and they probably saw it pulling out of the bay: Engine 21, Engine 22, Car 30, Truck 1, Volunteer Engines 5 and 9, Squad 6 Engine 26 was called to New St. HQ next door to staff Truck 2. This fire was COOKING. Numerous callbacks (about 25 members) to staff backup companies. Members put in alot of work in this fire, especially given the single digit temperatures. The crew of 22 looked like snowmen as they walked by me to rehab. Truck 1 was on the roof for a bit, they ventilated but they claimed the roof was (and I quote) "Unbelievable" and Command pulled roof operations at that point. When T2 got staffed and out the door, they had 2 master streams operating I saw 3 L/S/O, 1 Deck Gun (Engine 22 after repositioning), and 2 Aerial Streams. They had basically hit every hydrant on New Street and still needed to feed 22's Deck Gun, so a tanker shuttle operation was set up in the parking lot of Headquarters with a fill site at the Kennedy Ave Green. A Housatonic Area Regional Transit (HART) bus was called in to warm up the residents until they were brought to the War Memorial (acting as a Warming Station) the city's Public Health Dept. setup. FD Rehab was set up, conveniently, in the bay of Headquarters with EMS and the volunteer Canteen Truck As of 0015 units were still operating on scene, though the fire was placed under control at approximately 2030 Hours. HQ called Volunteer Squad 7 in for relief, probably for lighting support for the FM and Buildings Dept.

I don't like Obama, I'll admit that. But my distaste for him aside, isn't this a little ridiculous? FEMA disaster money going to Obama's Inauguration? God knows, with the fiscal crisis we're facing, departments out West won't need that money for forest fires or earthquakes. The Midwest won't need it for Tornadoes, the South for Hurricanes. Are we going to have to declare a state of emergency for every event where Obama is outside? Granted, the threat against his life is probably legitimate, but FEMA disaster funds?

Congratulations to the FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, USCG, NY Waterways, the units from Jersey and of course the pilot on a job very well done! The pilot should get the Presidential Medal of Freedom. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Medal_of_Freedom

I agree with alot of the people here when I say leave the firefighting to the firefighters. Police Departments already can't afford to provide enough law enforcement training and equipment for all of their officers, how are we going to afford firefighting training and equipment for them? Redundancy is not necessarily a good thing. Some municipalities have "Public Safety Departments" where the Police/Fire/EMS are all the same, and if that works where you're from, great, but I don't think its plausible everywhere. That being said, the Police should be issued SCBA or respiratory protection for WMD/HAZMAT/Clandestine Drug Labs/etc. I know the State of Connecticut issued Class C suits to every police department in the state. CT color-coded the suits and everything, Lime Green for FD, Olive Drab for PD, and I can't remember what EMS is, it might be orange or blue. Given the state of the world today, Police Officers need to be trained for HAZMAT, but not for fire suppression and rescue.

"We're recieving reports out of Pakistan that Al-Queda has recently trained carrier pigeons to seek out and destroy commercial airplanes." (Note: That was a joke, don't everybody start popping geese without tags now)

I didn't say she was a socialist, that was someone else. I'm assuming you mean the Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles that got picked to head EPA? Though, it matters what they label themselves if what they label themselves is counter-productive to the principles this country was founded upon. IE: Socialism.

Its not an emergency! Its a celebration of sorts. Homeland Security, Secret Service MAYBE, but the FEMA Emergency Response fund? That money WILL be needed elsewhere, given the financial state of most fire departments and the rapid deterioration of weather in recent years. This winter is harsh, brush fire season will probably be harsh.

MVFD, your comments on FEMA are inaccurate. The agency had problems before the hurricane, but FEMA has streamlined itself post-Katrina (I was present at the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs hearing where they provided a report on FEMAs progress. FEMA funds are used much more effectively than in the past. For example, FEMA now contracts with major companies to buy supplies nearby the incident, instead of having to ship them out from FEMA warehouses. I have the whole summary of the report, which I won't go into here, but there were alot of changes that have made the agency more effective. ALS, if we are going to spend that kind of money on the inauguration, thats one thing. But taking funds from the FEMA emergency budget puts more Americans at risk by detracting from what is available to the agency for actual emergencies. Congress has contingency funds all over the place, why can't those be used? I'm simply stating that this has been mismanaged, and that the declaration of a National Emergency A. sends a bad message and B., more importantly, endangers the ability of government to effectively respond to emergencies. According to the US FY 2008-2009 Budget proposal the US Secret Service ALONE is slated to get 1.4 BILLION dollars a year for its operations. FEMA gets a alittle over 5 billion for its emergency and disaster response budget. The money should be coming from somewhere else. http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/fy2009/pdf/budget.pdf PS: BVFD, Bush is not solely responsible for FEMAs failure during Katrina, if that nutjob Ray Nagin, Mayor of the "Chocolate City" (That's a direct quote from him, he really is insane) or the then-governor of LA would have recognized the hazard and requested help earlier, FEMA would have been able to respond sooner. Contrary to what the media tells you, Bush is not to blame for everything.

Thats what I said, but no, sadly, I'm not kidding. I'm not creative enough to make this ____ up.

Hopefully when we get out there we can hold our own against the West Coast teams.

That was pretty awesome video. I would not have been that close to a suspect with a long gun...

The British did, under the guise of the UN. But the US has unconditionally supported Israel since then. I personally believe its ridiculous. 23% of this nation's foreign aid goes to Israel, which is one of the wealthiest nations in the world. The fact that they require US weapons is a travesty. IMI (Israeli Military Industries) is one of the better military industrial complexes in the world, but you still see IDF forces using F16s, AH-1s, AH-64s, M16s, et cetera. I firmly believe that the Manhattan skyline would look significantly more developed today if the US didn't support Israel with all these weapons in the way that it does.

Israel invaded Gaza, pissed off all the Arab nations, so they are pawning their anger off on us, because Israel mostly uses American weapons and aircraft.

First let me start by saying I'm a scanner newbie, really only used them in the past to monitor 5-6 frequencies tops. I just got a PRO-164 scanner and I want to program the Connecticut State Police trunked system. Radioreference tells me they use Motorola Type II Smartzone Omnilink trunked system. I have all the frequencies and talkgroups, I just dont know exactly how to put them in. The manual for this scanner was essentially useless to me when I tried to program it, as this is my first attempt at programming a trunked system. Anybody have this model scanner that can give me some help?

Thanks Izzy, I'll try it out and if I have some trouble I'll shoot you a PM. In other news, I am not happy I missed that 2-Alarm in WH Center last night...

A good friend of mine lives right outside there. I've seen E44/T44 many times. That house runs pretty busy.
