Connecticut State Police has actually hired 2 classes in the past year, but at the same time they have a TON of Troopers retiring. As a result I don't know the balance of lost/gained manpower, but they seem to be at least trying to keep up. The only units that have suffered are the Traffic Division's Truck Squad (commercial enforcement is also done by the DMV Inspectors, who are armed police officers, so this unit was in the process of being disbanded) the Airport Troop (Troop W I believe at Bradley, manpower cuts but not completely eliminated) and I'm pretty sure the Casino Unit got shortened as well, as the Tribes have PDs of their own, I'm sure Izzy knows more than me.

I stand corrected. Well, either way, they're really damned close. This firehouse is in the shadow of the Prudential building.
-
Not for nothing, the way I was always taught in my strategy/tactics classes was "if the house has no one it it, how did the fire start?" Sure, there are plenty of other ways, but can you definitely take that chance? I'm not familiar with the NIOSH report, but if anyone is trying to make a blanket policy for "vacant" buildings, that would be foolish.

Actually I'm a junior now, haha. Sophomore year was crazy too though, so I never had time to do anything, my schedule was all over the place between going back and forth between home and school, Explorers, the FDs, club on campus, etc. I'm almost done, thank God.

BFD, we went to The Purple Shamrock. Great food, reasonable prices, nice enough atmosphere, service was OK.

So while the girlfriend and I were headed to Quincy Market we ended up in Government Center, where it looked like the Boston PD Police Activities League was having a go-kart race, and alot of their specialty units were around. A real treat, some of these vehicles are pretty cool. Next up is an AWESOME Boston PD Marine Unit/Harbormaster boat. No idea as to the make and there wasn't anyone nearby to ask. Plus we were on the way to an early dinner, so I didn't want to hold up too much.

Thanks, freshman year was too crazy with adjustments to keep doing the moderator job, but now that I have a pretty set schedule I'm happy to be back on board.

The only thing those plates are going to look good on are State Police cruisers. Forcing people to buy plates at a higher rate to raise state revenue? That's low, even for a politician. I hope you guys ditch this moron soon. I just hope we don't get one that dumb when Governor Rell leaves.

While I definitely do not agree that most of America's youth would "draft dodge" to another nation, the government would certainly have to stop the exemption due to college enrollment. The number of young adults in college today is exponentially higher than it was during the last time when America had a draft. I do however, oppose a draft, and not for selfish "I don't want to serve" reasons or "I hate the establishment" reasons. Being of the age group that would be drafted, I would not want to serve with all the kids I graduated with. I wouldn't trust them with a Nerf gun or a motor scooter, much less an M16 or an M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank. 90% of the people my age are lazy, media brainwashed zombies whose only political ambitions are that of whatever celebrity was on MTV or the news that day. Maybe its just a New England thing, but most of the people my age around my old high school and now my college would probably be more of a hindrance than a help in the military. No discipline, no respect for authority, no sense of patriotism... That being said, some of the guys and girls I went to or currently go to school with have already began promising military careers and are making my town proud. I really regret not entering the Armed Services sometimes, but that just wasn't the choice I made. Thanks to all who have served before and best wishes to all the US forces currently serving at home and abroad, may you all come home safe and may the fallen not be forgotten. Don't forget the Vet!

Jesus Christ... that was a car at one point? That's definitely a 1 in 1,000,000 scenario for survival...

That's debatable. More members of the Firebird's Association filed lawsuits within the past couple weeks to allege that the City's test was discriminatory by being 60/40 written/oral. Could hold things up. I was told by a high ranking official in New Haven that the promotions could take up to 2 years, which would also be the next time they will be hiring.

Really? Handing over a concession without return? If it raises morale and saves the taxpayers money, isn't it a win-win for both sides? The unions are happy and the city can say they gave something in good faith, and the city gets to say they lowered taxes because of the money it saves... Why is this an issue?

Got any shots of Marlboro's Hose Co. rigs? All the guys from the neighborhood used to hang out outside that firehouse ALL THE TIME when we were kids, I haven't lived there in more than 10 years though.

Apparently not quickly enough...

I may be mistaken, but I think the red police "livery" signifies Firearms Officers and Diplomatic Security, among other "SO" or Special Operations, units. As you may or may not know, most English Police Officers do not carry firearms. The yellow dot on the windshield of the red cars also signifies armed officers.

Wow, that's one helluva brush guard. Looks like the pushbars from that show "Jacked."

Link to original IA Talked to one of my National Explorer Academy classmates who lives just outside Seattle, Washington. All indications are saying the murder of Officer Timothy Brenton and the shooting of Student Officer Britt Sweeney was completely random. The traffic stop they were involved in seemed completely unrelated to the shooting. Just a mindless act of violence directed towards Police Officers. The rookie got a few shots off before the perp got away, unknown if she hit the suspect vehicle or the suspect himself, or anything at all. Talk about a trial by fire... No word yet on a specific suspect, but there's a sizable search going on, for obvious reasons. Best of luck to the Officers involved in the search, as Sun Tzu said "If your quarry goes to ground, leave no ground for him to go to." There was another Officer-Involved shooting in Lake Stevens, Washington about 45 minutes from Seattle, where my buddy is from. Originally people thought it may be related, but apparently this was a domestic violence case that had nothing to do with the original shooting, just a horrible coincidence. May the fallen Officer Rest in Peace, and may the injured Student Officer recover and quickly return to a long and successful career. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Officer Brenton and his Brother and Sister Officers in the Seattle Police Department.

Talked to my Explorer friend from outside Seattle who went to the funeral. Said it was a ceremony fit for a true hero. The good news is that about twenty minutes after the funeral, Seattle PD executed a search warrant on the home of the suspect in this assassination. Perp attempted to shoot the police as they entered, police shot the perp in the head, he's alive at the hospital at this time.

Election results may effect how my department (Allingtown in West Haven, CT) operates. The city charter has been revised after this election to include language that will allow the city to run a fire department. Up until now this was prohibited by the charter, which is why we have three independent fire taxation districts and three independent departments. The goal of the revision is to allow the city to consolidate all three districts into one. There is still a LONG laundry list of things that need to be done before consolidation is possible, but this is the first real step.

Nice idea. We do the sprinkler vs. non-sprinkler demonstration on mock dorm rooms down here at UNH. Hope you get great attendance!

Rest in Peace Trooper. "Hail Hail the State Police, the King of the Road can follow me... Nothing in this world is free, A Trooper's life was made for me!" -State Police Hymn

Wow, completely dwarfs that Coast Guard FAST Boat on the port side. Amazing vessel, seems worthy of the name and the people it honors. Godspeed USS New York.
