  1. Vintech is a good solution. In New Fairfield we use Danbury Hospitals EMS service to provide an EMT and Paramedic to staff a bus from 0600-1800 M-F and an on-call Paramedic flycar for all the other times. It works well, because during the day we just don't have the manpower in town to cover calls. The second ambulance will be staffed by volunteers or mutual aid if there is no staff. If the on-duty crew needs an extra set of hands they will tone out for that, and I BELIEVE EMT-Trainees can ride with the on-duty crew during the day if they want to.
  2. It would have been very different if he wasn't there, we were VERY shortstaffed and were having trouble getting through the crowd of boats to the victim. He did great. Is he a member with you guys?
  3. Firediver, you're absolutely right. I'm just bringing the point up because the "combat mission" in Iraq is over, according to the powers that be. Whether we buy that story is another thing entirely. Advisory troops will still be there for many years, and the Contractors will be there as long as State Department needs them. That is hilarious... I love it. Chief, I may use that idea. Also, I believe I ran into one of the service members from Bethel at that NF Water Rescue, the Navy Corpsman.
  4. Similar to the "Bearcat" but meant more for offroad applications. I've seen a few pictures of that floating around, and I want one... haha.
  5. Somebody from this site posted this on Facebook about a week ago, saw it there. Looks like a pretty good documentary. Now if only we can get some civilians to watch it.
  6. For those of us non-Westchester folk, where is Dunwoodie?
  7. Its not particularly popular, probably because you could just as easily leave room for the ladder truck with a pre-piped waterway and simply pump through that, instead of taking up valuable real estate in front of the fire with a pumper that has no heavy-duty rescue capability.
  8. I'm hoping to get picked up as the next Administrator of FEMA... I figure since we appoint Supreme Court Justices who were never judges, it can't hurt to throw my name into the running.
  9. Date: 8/7/10 Time: Approx 1450 Hrs Location: Candlewood Lake "Chicken Rock" in Sherman Frequency: 155.675 (NFVFD Channel 1), Marine Emergency Units Operating: New Fairfield FD, Sherman FD/EMS, CT Environmental Conservation Police (ENCON), Candlewood Lake Authority Marine Patrol (CLAMP) Weather Conditions: Clear, VERY Choppy waters Description Of Incident: 20 y/o male fallen 20-25 ft. from "Chicken Rock" onto the rocks below. Medic 1 transferred to Marine 17, patient was loaded onto M17 and other units in the water escorted 17 through heavy boat traffic to the drop off site. New Fairfield Medic 1 rode in for ALS on Sherman Ambulance. EDIT: I don't know if anyone was listening to this, but ENCON/CLAMP inquired if we wanted to set up for Lifestar or STATFlight, we declined since the transport time to Danbury isn't that long. STATFlight was giving a 60 minute ETA or something equally ridiculous and Lifestar was, as usual, unavailable.
  10. They are T-Shirts, people are going to want to see what they look like. I wasn't being insensitive.
  11. Disparate impact is Bravo-Sierra and we all know it, unfortunately the "protected class" laws in this country haven't been updated since the seventies.
  12. The roof pieces are most likely a deployable ramp that can be used to access second and/or third floor windows during an assault, allowing for multi-floor simultaneous entries. CT State Police has an armored car (made by General Dynamics) that has hydraulic systems that deploy these ramps, allowing the SWAT Operators to assault three floors at the same time.
  13. Haha, good one. And I wholeheartedly agree. In West Haven we have an E-One tower that is out of service at least twice a month. I'll never advocate the purchase of an E-One for any department I'm a member of.
  14. I'd love to see the design so I can order some and maybe take an order for the guys at the house.
  15. What? They BUSED MINORITIES IN to the last test and WAIVED the application fee... Besides the fact that half of the questions had at least 3 acceptable answers out of five. I give up on testing for the FDNY, the manure that is their testing process is too thick to wade through anymore. It was a BS test, but I wouldn't say there was anything discriminatory about it. I scored a 91 after I studied pretty hard between high school classes. People need to just grow up and accept the results. Besides, if you had a problems with the results you could challenge some questions, which I did, and get additional points.
  16. Happy birthday to you and the little one! Best wishes and may you all be healthy and happy. Congratulations Seth, pass that along to Kristen as well.
  17. Kudos to your department for actually getting trained in SWR, most of the time when departments have a dive team, the municipality just assumes that SCUBA-Steve can work in Class 3 rapids because he knows how to swim. I took CT's Surface Water Rescue Operational course (which turned out to be a swift water course, while I was thinking it would be surface water like lakes, etc.) and it was extremely informative but definitely trains you in a set of skills that need to be practiced. Those of us without moving water in our districts under normal conditions (because Seth is right, the weather has been crazy here) probably wouldn't expect the kind of numbers that exist in terms of force created by moving water. Anyone taking any sort of water rescue course should learn at least the basics of how swift water works, IE an Awareness level course.
  18. Not a particularly well written article, but the writer is an intern with the Register. Anyway, I took part in this drill since I'm the Intern for NH Office of Emergency Management, roleplayers were CERT and Medical Reserve Corps members from around Region 2 (which is basically New Haven County.) New Haven CERT acted as shelter staff along with the Red Cross. Participating Agencies (As shelter staff, not including roleplayers, evaluators or controllers:) New Haven Office of Emergency Management (Including CERT) American Red Cross CT State Animal Response Team (Mobile Pet Shelter) New Haven and Milford Medical Reserve Corps New Haven Board of Education Security/Special Constables New Haven Police Department Yale Police Department AMR New Haven
  19. I was unable to attend the services, I had to work with OEM today for my internship, but I know ALOT of New Haven Firefighters went down, including a duty engine and truck for coverage. I wish I was able to attend, my condolences to everyone in the BFD and the families of the Fallen Brothers. I know the BFD will continue on stronger and more united than ever after this terrible tragedy.
  20. We add a BLS ambulance and a Paramedic flycar to all working fire assignments that staff the rehab section and provide transport if needed, EMTs that respond POV to calls for additional manpower are generally assigned to rehab unless they are interior certified. Juniors also assist in setting up the tarps and rounding up the cases of water stored in each rig. Occasionally we used to call Squad 7 from Danbury for their enclosed rescue-style truck to rehab, but that has since been replaced with a walk-around, so we would call the Putnam Lake MERV, which has more space and better A/C.
  21. A fire would be considered exigent circumstances and would therefore be an exception to the 4th amendment requirements for government employees needing a warrant to enter property.
  22. Sounds like a pretty good idea. Works great for a lot of other departments out in the Midwest.
  23. Youtube of the dispatch audio from the Bridgeport LODD Fire.
