  1. My suggestions? From an operational standpoint: TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN until shuttle operations becomes second nature. And not just by yourselves, get your mutual aid partners involved. Train in the summer, train in the winter, train often and make it realistic. If more than a tiny portion of your area is not hydranted you need to be expecting these kinds of calls and preparing for them. Hydrants are (by comparison) easy. Move and flow water until you don't have to think about it. Ensure tankers are on your first due assignment (yes, even for AFAs) in that area. Then ensure your mutual aid tankers are automatic on confirmation of a working fire. From an administrative standpoint: Work with your local zoning board/fire marshal/whomever to ensure that these new developments have a cistern system installed to give you at least a few thousand gallons to start with. New Fairfield did this years ago, at least a 10,000 tank in each new development. If you can't put out a residential fire with that you're probably going to lose the building anyway, but its definitely enough to buy you the time to get a good shuttle operation going with plenty of mutual aid tankers.
  2. RagTop Fire Helmets and Restoration Ragtopfire.com Capitol City is great too, he's got a real commitment to doing it the Cairns way just like we do at RagTop. Just make sure whoever you have do it is using quality materials and paint. Too many fly-by-nights using grill paint and one-shot that looks like crap and doesn't hold up.
  3. If you like your plan, you can keep your plan. If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. Right?
  4. Found out last night from a buddy with WEMS. Thoughts and prayers are with the Chief, his family and OVAC. Stay strong.

  7. Danbury has a volunteer company in one of the most heavily non-English speaking neighborhoods and the department uses it to their advantage, especially when it's time for fire prevention week.
  8. That was kind of where I was going with that. I've never had such a problem with it...
  9. If you feel you can spare having the extra hose, sure.
  10. I don't know what you're asking, can you elaborate?
  11. For some reason I am unable to PM... but I might be interested. Please PM me if you can.
  12. This is the same Lake George that invites fire trucks from all over the state of NY to flock to their town for a parade?
  13. Wait, you mean a department didn't want to send a company into a city that they don't normally operate in without ensuring there was a command level officer present? I for one am both shocked AND appauled at this display of professional responsibility. I'm sure if Yonkers had an issue with this they'd stop calling these departments for mutual aid...
  14. Definitely a worthwhile trip. I'll probably be headed up with Charter Oak FOOLS.
  15. Fire/EMS Department Operational Considerations and Guide for Active Shooter and Mass Casualty Incidents Dept. of Homeland Security / Federal Emergency Management Agency / US Fire Administration I don't think anyone has posted this yet. This is the document that's bringing about this change in strategy/tactics.
  16. This is the photo posted on Dunbar Hill's Facebook: Was this the rig that flipped on the highway or was that it's twin? Best of luck to Company 8 with the new rig. I know their company was hurting not having an in service piece for so long. Hopefully this helps turn that around.

  19. Which gives me just the tiniest bit of hope for humanity.
  20. "Risk a little to save a little, risk a lot to save a lot." Have we forgotten that?
  21. I had the honor of meeting Tomasz's family and some of the Members of West Webster FD at NFFF Memorial Weekend this year. Great people, the department sent down about 100 people to the service. Received this from WWFD after the service:
  22. Rest in Peace Trooper. A shame people can't simply slow down and move over...
  23. We're not just talking about probies. We're talking about mentoring. A GOOD Senior Firefighter should be a mentor in ways an officer cannot. But I agree we should not necessarily give out titles.
