*** NO LIVE FIRE *** Ladder Company Operations **NEW** Conventional Forcible Entry & Safe Interior Search Operations: ALL members will force a moderate to heavily secured door with the irons, and immediately conduct an interior search under zero-visibility conditions. Vent, Enter & Search (VES) Operations: ALL members will safely conduct a VES operation under zero-visibility conditions while using SCBA. Don’t wait until 3am with a mother screaming and pointing, “My daughter is in that room!” to “try” this operation for your first time! Flat-Roof Operations: ALL members will operate a power saw to conduct at least a 3’x5’ ventilation opening on a flat-roof prop. Engine Company Operations Stretching the Initial Attack Line: ALL members will participate & discuss various options for preconnected and static hose beds. Members will perform long stretches from a static hose bed, in an effort to “think outside of the preconnect.” Tips and techniques on correctly estimating the stretch will also be addressed. Advancing the Initial Attack Line: ALL members will advance a 1 ¾” attack line (while flowing water) through a multiple room fire scenario. Tips and techniques for operating and managing the attack line will be stressed as the line is pushed in. Aggressive 2 ½” Attack Line Operations: ALL members will advance a 2 ½” attack line (while flowing water) through a multiple room fire scenario. Many firefighters approach this evolution saying, “Not possible!” We show you the tips & techniques that make it possible. You and ONE other member will advance the line through this scenario. Hello all, We still have a few spots left in our Basic Forcible Entry Operations class hosted by the Hughsonville Fire Department (Wappingers Falls, NY) held on October 10th, 2009. The flier is available for download on our website at: Brotherhood Instructors, LLC. (in the Upcoming Classes area) or directly at this link. The class is an 8-hour, hands-on, open enrollment class. All are welcome. Some highlights are listed below: - Participate in a 2hr lecture on size-up, various doors & tools. - Force inward opening doors - Force outward opening doors - Force a door from the "hinged-side" - Force "chinese" padlocks with a screwdriver - Force padlocks using the irons, duckbill, etc... - Cut padlocks with a power saw - Perform at least 10 cuts with a power saw to simulate the removal of window bars - Cut a simulated American Series 2000 Hockey-puck lock - Pull lock cylinders using a Rex-tool, K-tool and/or the irons. - Receive hands-on training manipulating hundreds of locks on display using through-the-lock techniques Stay safe, and hope to see you there. Jloftus, I am not upset in the least about this, but you should give the photographer a heads up when using their photos. It is kind of weird feeling when you see your shots in something that you didn't know about. AGAIN PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY! The video was very well done and I would have given you permission anyway. I don't mind at all if it is for something like this. Had I known, I would have given you the hi-resolution images so they wouldn't have looked so "choppy". Thanks for your time and you made a great video for a great department.

Thanks guys, Sorry it took me so long to reply. I had no idea that this thread was going on. I am actually kind of shocked and very flattered that it is here. I appreciate all of the congrats and kind words. The article and the coming articles are written for the guys on the street. I was asked by the Editor-In-Chief Bobby Halton to take over the Fire Focus column and I obviously accepted. There will also be a photo based size-up drill column called "Table Top Drills" in the coming months. Everything in the upcoming articles will be based on THE BASICS and keeping the guys on the street SAFE. Nothing more, nothing less. I am going to strive to keep it at a "written by a firefighter, for firefighters" type of learning. Table-Top Drills I am hoping will be ammunition for the kitchen table so members from the newest probie on the nozzle can discuss what they might do. With the same article, the bosses and chiefs can also discuss their expectations at the same job. I am hoping to make it a bit interactive some how, but that's down the road. It is kind of up in the air when the next Fire Focus is going to hit the magazine, but it is already done. It will also deal with commercial fires regarding hose estimation and tricks and tips to make the stretch a little more smooth and fluid. There are a couple of shots from Yonkers as well as a shot from Indiana in the upcoming article. About Brotherhood Instructors: My brother and I have been teaching for quite some time in Illinois. Just this year we decided to incorporate and make it a company. The company website is located at: Brotherhood Instructors, LLC if you want to give it a look. I am working on updating the site this week and I hope to get it up to speed. We have some great new developments and we are moving in the right direction and we hope to be very active shortly. I fully agree. I have used a few different varieties of tools. Most of the time I have used Hurst and Amkus, and Amkus is my tool of choice (if I had one)! Much lighter, more powerful, and less bulk to them!

Almost all of the Chicagoland suburbs have them and it works great. The only problem that I have ever heard of it was last year on 4/27 when a Stone Park, IL Engine and a Northlake, IL Engine collided at an intersection going to the same garage fire. Northlake had the opticom, and control of the light. Stone Park continued through the red and was hit by the Northlake Engine. The boss of the Stone Park rig (also a full-time Chicago Fire Department Paramedic) was killed and the Chauffeur was pinned. Everyone riding in the rigs were hurt to some extent. The NIOSH Report is available at: Stone Park, IL Firefighter Fatality NIOSH Report While this crash was probably not the fault of the Opticom, it could be a problem with individual departments having them or not having them. The "shut-off" while parked at intersections shouldn't be a problem. You should have the Opticom wired into the lights that shut off when the rig is parked (some of the rotator, strobe, 888, Roto-ray or other lights shouldn't be operating when the rig is parked on the side of the road) because it blinds drivers. Most of the rigs that I have worked on there are a few lights that shut down in the front and rear when the rig is in neutral and the parking brake is on. You guys are probably getting sick of my "Chicagoland s***", sorry about that. That is where 11 of my 14 years in the Fire Service was served so it is the bulk of my experience. I apologize!
