In honor of Rockland County native and FDNY Battalion Chief Michael Fahy who was tragically killed yesterday in an explosion of an illegal drug lab in the Bronx, our department vehicles will be displaying a red line across the rear windows of our patrol vehicles in his memory. This was the idea of PO Andrew Yorke and he was assisted by PO Mike Careswell, K-9 Officer Lou Venturini, Sgt. Rick Marsh and Sgt. Dave Tarantino. We greatly appreciate Chief Fahy's as well as all firefighters service to their communities. - Chief Osborn
In honor of FDNY Battalion Chief Fahy, we at the Suffern PD would like to extend our condolences and support to Firefighters everywhere. Thin Red Line's have been placed on the rear window of our cruisers to show our love. It's the least we could do after Suffern FD has been flying Thin Blue Line flags from their apparatus to support us in trying times.
- In this brotherhood, nobody fights alone - Police Officer Andrew Yorke

Although forgotten in most of the body counts there were also NYS Court Officers, an NYC Fire Patrolman, 2 private Fire Guards (who were retired from FDNY) and several private security officers.

So today I passed a new Ford Interceptor with lights on pulled off to the side of the road. When I got a closer look, it said State EMS. The inspector was in the process of checking a commercial agency's supervisor/first response vehicle. My questions is this, what authority if any do they have to pull over a vehicle? Inspect, by all means, but is there legal precedent for the DOH to pull over a vehicle? I have always of inspectors doing their work in ER bays or ambulance stations/bases. I'm assuming most people would pull over out of courtesy, but are they required to do so? Was this simply because there can't be a patient in a response vehicle?

I definitely think they (the EMS personnel) could've handled the situation better, however the video appears to me to be ambiguous at best as to whether or not the pt had a pulse or was breathing. The only thing that was clear was that the guy needed medical attention in some fashion. If their assessment was that he was breathing and had a pulse, then the administration of CPR would in all likelihood not be appropriate. They certainly could've had a little more pep in their step, but the patient was on the stretcher and on the way to the ambulance within a few of minutes contact by EMS. Again, if their assessment was that he was breathing and had a pulse, going to the ambulance rather than initiating care right there was the appropriate call IMO. Now, if their assessment was that he wasn't breathing and/or didn't have a pulse, then initiating care on the spot would've been the right thing to do.
I think the only thing clearly obvious to a lay person was that the guy appeared to be in need of medical care in some fashion since he was unconscious. The average lay person is often ignorant to exactly what care a patient needs on scene and what care EMS can actually provide at that point. I know I frequently encounter patients, family or bystanders who question why we aren't just putting the patient in the ambulance and driving to the hospital. The average lay person also often thinks that their medical needs or that of another person are more of an "emergency" than it actually is and this feeds the belief that EMS should be doing "more" to treat the patient, when in fact they may be doing everything they can within their scope of practice or the patient's condition only merits "minimal" care.
I think the video is a little less murky to the trained eye in that the initial assessment could have definitely been performed better, but it still fails to definitively answer the questions "is he breathing" and "does he have a pulse". We can only assume the answer to both questions was "yes" since they didn't immediately start CPR.
Without knowing all of the details, it's hard to say whether or not any or all of the suspensions for the 4 EMS providers were appropriate, but I think the speed in which they occurred were a PR move first (damage control) and a patient care issue second. The public often sees what they want to see in these situations, particularly when their is racial component (real or perceived) and want immediate action and far too often, management et al are too willing to bow down to that pressure and take punitive actions with incomplete information and in violation of the employees right to "due process".

Got this on FB and found it to be one of the best troop commercials I've ever seen...and recognition that's long overdue if you ask me.

So there is a small, but perhaps growing movement to postpone the marathon until Sandy recovery can get further along. There are suggestions that city resources allocated to the event should instead be dedicated to recovery. Mayor Bloomberg said that lots of small buisnesses depend on the some 47000 participants. Opponents claim its cold to think about sports when people have no homes. Thoughts?

It does not matter what profession it is. If the city provided you with the helmet or if they gavr you a allowance to.buy the helmet. It still belongs to the city. If they want to charge you to keep the city.owned equipment then it is their right to do so. If the money goes towards the city's budget that is even better. It was mentioned that the $100 goes to the fdny foundation which is a nonprofit organization that benefits you and your job. Some woild think you would be proud tl support a organization that supports your livelihood and safety.

While I admit there might be some rural areas where waiting for pd backup might be an issue, it really is not an issue for EMS because if you need pd, you're not entering the scene. As an EMT, one of the greatest deterrents I have is not looking like a police officer and not being visibly armed. There is a calming effect on those in need that might be otherwise unwiling to speak to law enforcement, add the gun and you automatically resemble law enforcement, and waste valuable time and trust attempting to explain that you are not. Can it save a life? Unquestionably, but it can equally (and I think more likely) put you in danger. Since the law is simply repealing a ban, it doesn't provide any sort of law enforcement training that I would hope that ANYONE who is going to be in the position to use a weapon in the course of one's duty should have.

Seems kind of stupid, last thing you want is a patient to go and grab your gun

It's got nothing tto do with the city or how the memorial was designed, some people are just disprespectful period. I've been there twice, for the large amount of staff they have there, they seem to be doing an awful lot of nothing, no interpretation, no enforcement.. After the first incident with the school kids, there was an editorial from a retired Dep. Chief who summarized a sentiment I have heard before. This should be in the hands of the National Park Service, who run not only the Flight 92 National Memorial but as the chief mentioned World War II in the Pacific National Monument, (more commonly known as USS Arizona or Pearl Harbor). He was quite right in saying that the NPS does not tolerate any nonsense in running these sights and mantains a respecful and quiet atmosphere in deference to those lost.

Even though Romney is anti union, anti labor, anti firefighters, anti cops, anti teachers you still want him??? Not a chance in hell. He is trashing "Obama care" and it is quite similar to his own healthcare plan he instituted in MA. I don't love the choices, but I am not for anyone who is against the way I make a living. Wisconsin? Hello???? Get rid of collective barganing??? All politicians suck, they all lie, but the Republicans are no friend of middle class, civil service union employees. He wants to take everything away that so many have fought for. Who helped institute a tier 6? Democrats?

The Troopers were the first to arrive. Yes, the police often respond to emergencies in the rural parts of the state. This being a Friday afternoon, just before Christmas in a sparsely populated town with a well hidden from road/view structure the fire had a lot of headway before it was discovered. The person who discovered the fire actually drove to the volunteer firehouse to report it, found no one there and used the emergency phone to notify 911. The fire department was finally called, and almost immediately called 3 more departments under mutual aid for assistance. There is not a career fire department within sight of southern Columbia County. Troopers arrived initially and updated 911. The fire department did eventually show up with an engine, a tanker and a rescue each with a driver. With the limited manpower and some more enroute from neighboring departments with extended ETA's, the IC asked the Troopers for assistance to try to keep the fire from extending to the other portion of the house. The Troopers, 3/4 who are volunteer firefighters with chief officer experience and training obliged with permission from their supervisor. When enough fire personnel arrived, the Troopers were relieved and re-assumed their law enforcement roles.
Maybe not the best situation, but it happened, happened safely and they did do some good. Let's face it, this fire was the biggest thing going on in Columbia County at the time and the 2 speeders that got away on the Taconic during the time the Troopers were manning the hoseline will be caught next time.
As someone who takes a lot of fire pics in the Greene & Columbia areas I see the cooperation between law, fire and rescue squads all the time. You look up here at fire scenes and say "What the ....??" and I look at operations in the "Metro" areas and just scratch my head.
And Truck12345 seriously? Bill the FD for the Troopers time?? Maybe we should send bills to the NYSP every time we have to sit at a wire down on a STATE road and wait for NiMo or CH?? Maybe the next time we need the Troopers to help close a road so we can lay supply line across the street, maybe they won't be there.
I'm proud and happy that these Troopers were able to help and were not so disgruntled and screwed up that they just looked crosseyed at the Chief and said "Sorry dude. Not my job."
