Last time I heard, Empress calls onscene and pt contact.

Abselutely not...we kill him, he wins, we've played right into his hands and encourage others to follow in his beliefs. I say the feds make it so that he is jailed w/ Sheriff Joe in Arizona...least then we don't spend as much money and perhaps some humilation at the same time.

So, apparently Rachael Ray's neck scarf looks like a Muslim headress, and DD is so worried about backlash they pulled the ads. Come on, in this world that we live, is this really what anyone, no matter what their beliefs should take a stand on???? This stuff can't possibly do anything good for America's world image. You are right, purple has been adopted by some funeral homes, however, that is still not authorized by any section of NYS VTL. I have personally seen funeral processions driven like a motorcade, using purple lights and untrained funeral home drivers...very unsafe! You are also correct, all this does is desensetize the public to true emergencies.

ny10570, right on the money. Based on the 2005 changes, you are correct the money might be better spent on a CPR program. Depending on the size of the district, the chances of arriving in time where an AED is more useful than early and consistent CPR might be very minimal. W/O a doubt, if it saves a life, that is a great, great thing, but one can only help but wonder if it the large investment is really warranted.

FDNY Medics rapped in boy's death If it truly happened as the article said, this is really really sad, and embarrassing for EMS! Any thoughts?
-
Lawyers started all of this and they can end it all too...stop soliciting this kind of business and don't entertain it when it is brought to you!!
-
Tragic, yes. But the point is by the time we're done with all the law suits, it will be too costly to step outside ones own door, let alone do anything close to fun...

I always come through .com, always liked the conglomeration of everything all at once, not having to scroll through a giant list of forums. Photo system is ok, but it is bad b/c i have to read it each time and try to remember whats new and whats not...a date posted would be extremely helpful!!

The article sites a turnover rate of 20% People retiring, simply leaving etc all contribute to the aforementioned shortage. The artice is no surprise to anyone in the field...as has been discussed on this website many times, EMS is not payed nearly what it is worth. This problem is nothing new, at the very minuimum there have been no raises in 2 years. I'm not sure what exactly sure what people think will change the situation now. If FDNY/the city won't authorize funds (and again, if they haven't in the past, I'm not sure why they will stary now), then they need to fill the gap somehow. Let the voluntary hospitals add units to pick up the slack if they're willling. If they worried about quality, let them add an extra supervisor to monitor the non FDNY (and FDNY) units.

Rest In Peace. Thoughts and prayers with everyone involved!

I agree, spinal immobilization does not appear to be a priority in this instance...as always and has been said above, secure the knife and monitor life threatening conditions. Not sure about pulling the knife if breathing goes, perhaps if it's secure enough, shift him to the side and assist breathing from there? I like Moggie6's answer, if ever there was a time to break out that number for medical control, this would be a good one.

Wow, all this and still no one has actually answered the question at hand in good detail...why such a large response?? Is it just how its laid out, is simply a matter of people wanting to buff the job, or did somthing about this particular incident spark it (i.e. the plane had a large quantity of fuel on board etc ) I would be interested in some meaningful discussion about this, not going back and forth as to the reason behind the creation and function of DHS....b/c as we constantly say, why so many resources when it appears under control and small incident, or is the current plan of deployment effectice?
-
And that is exactly why we have the violence we do....this is not a police state or communist regime, its a demoocracy. Cops DO NOT have an all access pass to whatever they want, who decides what is messing and whats not??? Guess what, we wouln't need the CCRB, or have names like Livoti or Volpe haunting the past if that sort of attitude worked!!!
-
So, so far everyone's happy that there was an aquittal and the officers are vindicated etc etc but can no one see the potential harm to this situation??? Everyone correctly identified that there is great anger about the verdict, do cops really think that this will win them the respect they deserve and want on the streets? Bottom line, there have been three police related shootings in the past few years with no legal consequence to police, I can say its a pretty good bet that we can see the same type of reaction to police that we saw in this particular incident. So, yes rejoice the the detectives got off, but I would say that we're in for another shoe to drop. Cops demand respect, (and ideally should be given), but if you fear for your life, thats the last thing on your mind....that fear combined with the lack of respct/heed of cops orders leads to the exact same situation we had last november, dangerous for both cops and civilians.

A breath of fresh air, thank you!

You need to think before you type...almost everyone one of the posters here tempered their anger/shock about the tracic situation by stating " if that is how it happed"... giving the benefit of the doubt. Second, even though there are several in FDNY who have shown a marked dislike for voluntary hospitals in the system, I would like to think that the strong feelings here are more about the unnecessary loss of life and apparent negligence of three professional trained responders, no matter their affiliation!!
-
I agree totally...9 times out of 10, other crews responding will open the door after banging on it to confirm whether they are needed or not. If that didn't happen, then all three should be fired for being incompetent, b/c anyone who is incapable of seeing or hearing another crew they requested arriving onscene or not checking for them before leaving CAN NOT be trusted to perform the duties of an EMT ( in which observation and being sharp is critcal) and save a life!!

Good points mvfd334. This is nuts!! People are injured and traffic is a problem, both requiring our assistance. If there's more info in the text of the dispatch, or if people want to word their reports (especially LE) to reflect the true cause of an incident, by all means. HOWEVER, how many times have we come upon a call that is not what it is dispatched as??? You can call it whatever you want, but we as professionals are trained to, and should always deal with what we are presented with and not not be lazy and jump to conclusions that are not substantiated b/c we are not yet onscene! Bottom line, classification of anything should not be in our minds until AFTER the call is completed.
