So I've read pretty much all the posts on this thread say shut down if necessary for as long as necessary. Ok so say you do shut it down and get no arguments from PD. How many of you will then actively work to treat the victims and then clear the road safely and expediently as opposed to extending the onscene time b/c you can, don't care or it's not your job?? (and before anyone jumps down my throat, I am not advocating shoddy patient care, safety or techniques in any way) I get the safety factor, but as a driver as well as an EMT I will honesty say that it annoys me to no end when a road is closed or down to one lane and there is no active work going on, ie PD is sitting in their cars and everyone else is talking to eachother on the side of the road. CKROLL and Chris192 had it right, we're all on the same side and the effects of closing a road are long reaching and can also be dangerous.

I agree that FEMA is troubled, underfunded, disorganized etc however the answer is simple. From a planning mindset, it is easier to deal w/ residents in homes than it is to attempt to find and help them on the street in an emergency. Easier for paperpwork for benefits, easier for notification during disasters, easier for accounting for citzens of the affected area. (they may be homeless but they are still human beings, and citizens.) Should another agency be responsible or pick up the slack, abselutely? But when no one else steps up...I applaud the moral effort/intent here.

Totally agreed!!! Snow is snow, the media blows it totally out of proportion!

Anyone care to back up their statements??? NYS judges have not received a raise....not in the last 10 years. PD and Fire get consistent raises through bargaining agreements and unions, that is not the case for every job. The correct statement would say that the "greedy politicians" have linked the judges raises to their own, which rightly have not been approved. NYS Judges Raise Denied

Cogs, well said! I'm glad someone realizes the execution is EXACTLY what they want us to do, and exactly why we should not do it. Forget any moral arguement, go to the most basic, killing them proves exactly what they want to prove about us that we are evil etc...kill them and we almost guarantee continued troubles. I agree, make the guys life miserable.

Idk, just rode through 42nd St/Grand Central, there was at least 4 officers on each side of the 4/5/6 tracks...

Agreed, be eager and willing to learn. That means don't show off or bulls*** what you don't remember and ask questions if you don't know. (after the job if its not critical offcourse) I'm sure anyone whose spent more than a minute training will tell you, better have a guy who knows he doesnt know it and wants to get it right than someone who thinks he knows it all and doesn't. Sounds like your on the right track. The guys on the street don't do the hiring, so whats done is done, that part should dissapear pretty quickly. If they don't want to tech and drive all day like a moron(on the slim perchance it's an agency that doesn't have new techs ride third) , they will teach you. Most will remember that they all started somewhere and were pretty green. That being said, don't sit on your haunches at home, crack the book any chance to keep refreshing yourself. Depending on what the company provides, I'd say the the minumum you want are your scope, penlight/minmag, shears a couple of pens, a scratch pad and a field guide if you've got one. As for boots, anything will do, but broken in is always better. Congrats btw

New York Daily News-Leo Standora 10/28/08 Conneticut boy, 8, killed in Mass Gun Show Accident This is utterly ridiculous! I can't support or fathom why a parent would let their child hold and use an automatic weapon at age 8. I don't care how responsible, talented, or interested the child is, it is just not acceptable. It not only shows bad judgement as a parent, but bad judgement as a gun lover/owner not to know the power of the weapon and know its just a bad idea. At age 13 (very short and still am) I fired a shotgun and it knocked me back a good bit... I can't imagine what this was like. Tragic, and theres no excuses, only plain stupidity. Any cops care to comment?

It does not appear any HIPAA regulations were violated. HIPAA applies to those providing medical care. Every source of "facts" in the article appears to be the police department spokesman or taken from the open airwaves of PD dispatch. The only medical source mentioned in the article was the hospital, and it declined to give any pertinent facts, therefore not breaking HIPPA. While it may be in bad taste, the PD, through their investigation, can release information covered under HIPAA. Here is a link to the HIPAA act and who it applies to: http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/hipaa/consumer_rights.pdf

Glad that its worded "consider" as opposed to "must" end the chase. This is more applicable for vehicular pursuits...I figure the moment that someone else gets hurt or effected by the person that was not apprehended by a chase that was ended early, this policy will come under review again...

So lets evaluate: 2007 season with Willie, almost there and a dissapointment. 2008 season, same deal. 2007-Willie 2008-Omar. If thats the case, should have just stuck with Willie and been loyal.

I think people are mistaking quality control for inflexable tradition. I have seen first hand volunteer agencies turn down badly needed, qualified assistance simply based on an archaic rule or pride. No one would advocate placing an unqualified person on the road, but at the same time, we are in vital roles, people depend on us. Given a choice between answering a call or not having the adeqaute staffing, I know where my choice is. The situation needs above sounds like agencies need to swallow their pride, accept the offer, and make it work for everyone's best interest. There have been multiple threads here on the lack of volunteerism, recruitmemt issues etc...you can't have it both ways, if you have a willing volunteer. esp someone with qualifications, you do what you must to make it work, not spew a bunch of junk about how long its going to take to bring that person up to your standards. Mikeint, kudos for your willingness to volunteer in your temporary neighborhood!

PD and FD t-shirts abound, the problem becomes when those t-shirts are used as uniform pieces as opposed to station wear or street clothes. When a ff jumps out of a truck for a non fire related job wearing a tshirt or a cop on raid is wearing a tshirt, the line can be blurred. Likewise, when a tshirt is used as a uniform piece on an ambulance, yes it becomes an issue when a non-member wears that same or very similar tshirt. I think it then may very well cause an expectation of training or service when in fact none exixts. There are two options: making the official uniform not include tshirts, or making a tshirt cleary different from a uniform tshirt (ie making it for a specific event, labeling it supporter, family member etc) and ensuring that those tshirts then are only worn by non members, not those on duty.

It's a nice sentiment, but like other have said, I feel its totally inappropriate. With respect to firefighters, many other people, from civil services and regular civilans acted with bravery and compassion on that day. I believe the best course of action is to leave the 11th as a national day of rememberence, as a tribute to all, not just some.

NY Daily News 7/21/08 A Sole Priorty I still cannot fathom why anyone would let their child run barefoot through a public playground. There are million things that can be stepped on (in any park anywhere) and yes, common sense would dictate that in the summertime, in the middle of a heat wave, things that are out in the sun WILL BE HOT!!! I'm glad NYC P&R is sticking to their guns and defending the mats...our playgrounds have been dumbed down enough over the years with crazy lawsuits, enough is enough. I truly feel sorry for the child, but I totally blame the parents 100 %. If they sue the city, I say the city slaps them with a child endangerment charge for not properly clothing their children.

Ok so I've been notice lots of people wearing scrubs all around, alot on the train, in stores etc. I looked up the definition, theoretically scrubs are to be worn in a clean enviornment. I realize that sometimes receptionists and housekeeping types wear scrubs in hospitals, but still there remains a large number of people who wear them and have patient contact. So, my question is this, in wearing these scrubs on the train (which who knows if they ever get cleaned) and wherever else, do they expose patients with compromised immune systems to unecessary risk? Or, conversely, do they expose us who sit next to them or brush up against them to the lovely diseases and pathogens that they spent the day working around? Seems like a good reason to change at work!

Abselutely horrible! He was not CFS, but rather National Park Service. Many condolences to his family, firefighting crew, his home park of Olympic National Park and the entire NPS family.

In most cases you can only go so far. Usually, I try to tell people that w/ things such as Fast Track etc they will go right in and if its nothing, then they will be out quickly with no real hastle to them, and if its not then they have gotten things taken care of before its gets worse/lifethreatening. As 129K said, if they're really that bad off, then we'll be back soon enough, usually w/ implied consent in effect.
