EMD cards is a system utilized to help identify problems, severity of the problems, and any pre-arrival instructions that should be given to the caller by a dispatcher. The cards are broken down into a case entry (location of caller, phone#, etc. vital info) and then broken down into call specific questions - ie: under the "Fall Victim" card - how far did they fall, how long ago did it happen... and depending how setup, can determine how a priority of a call is set, ALS is dispatched, etc. http://www.911dispatch.com/emd/emd-prs.html is web based version (for the most part) of the cards http://www.911dispatch.com/emd/emd.html has some further background info on the EMD system

It's not even the fact of if EMD is or is not being used. I was actually talking to someone at 60ctl the other day about this. The larger issue here is that (besides many corp's not being dispatched by 60ctl) many agencies want to make the call for ALS on their own when they start responding or get on scene. Instead of following typcial EMD procedures and sending calls on a priority level, the calls are just being dispatched with a chief complaint -- pretty much not giving any real use to the EMD procedures besides for pre-arrivals.

RW - to be honest... your 911 situation is anywhere. I dispatch EMS (yes, with EMD) and I've been in the middle of emergency calls when I get a "signal 10-50 - man down" while trying to go though EMD procedures (it was hit by accident, but still) - its part of juggling everything (not to mention if you get multiple emergency calls at once all involving pre-arrivals?) I do agree that everything should be split up by agency. I've seen the Ondagaga (spelling?) county call center and I have to say I'm damn impressed. They are all split up into teams - they have X number of people taking 911 calls only - no dispatching - just call taking, fire/ems (W/ EMD)/police and entering it into the computer. They then have three different teams for Fire/EMS/Police dispatch + communications. Runs really smoothly not to mention that all EMS calls are prioritized (Arrest = P1 (Emergency Response + ALS), General Sickness = P3 (non-emergency) and ALS is dispatched virtually automatically if the agency doesn't provide it. It just makes more sense to have everything centralized in one location - makes it easier to get more units when needed. My $0.02.

Why is everyone so negative about the FASTeam concept? it's not that big a deal to call out a fasteam to not need them, and be done with it. Is it part of some sort of a "macho man" concept? Seriously, if you have a man in a burning building there should be someone ready to run in there and get him out. #1 rule of firefighter survival: There is no "typical" fire. Don't say "we dont need a FASTeam because this is a simple one room fire" - that's how death's have happened. Goes back to the old idea of 1 man in, 1 man out (or 2 men out to get that 1 man) I see no reason why a fasteam isn't called or put on standby.

Last that I heard is that nothing has changed since all the media banzi hit the FD.

There's going to be a whole story about this on News Channel 4 tonight @ 11 -- seems to be the 'lead story' - they have video footage of 60ctl's dispatch center too.

NINN.org isn't bad... (dispatch.ninn.org) - it varies though - sometimes a lot of pages, other times not a lot at all. I think for NINN, it's just "certified buffs" that are accepted to dispatch calls and such.

Chappaqua was also on scene. CFD Firefighter told me it wasn't that large a job and was knocked down extremly quickly. Good job P-ville FD.

Actually, I heard word that News12 *did* know about it and was supposed to be there and backed out at the last minute. It was good to see the Journal News write something NICE about Millwood and Firefighting in general... seems everything about Millwood has been negative lately - about time someone woke up! =D>

http://dispatch.ninn.org (sub site of http://www.ninn.org) Nice site that can page you or email you when there's a large breaking news story/emergency related incident... you can select different parts of the US to get updates for. I've gotten notification about a number of incidents, doesn't cover anything but has a nice number of reports. Check it out

If you go to news 12's website and look at the ticker it says: "Investigation continues as to why fire engine tipped over in Ossining" What smart people.

Wow! Somewhat interesting... saw the whole drug thing coming though. Is it me or does it seem like the show is falling apart? Any word from NBC if they are trying to phase out the show?? I hope not.

I'd have to say -- M&R Deli in Mt. Kisco is not on anybody's list yet... I think they personally have some of the best chicken cutlett. Rockies is obviously up top too... no where you can eat great any time of the night. David Chen's chinese food in Armonk... PF Changs in White Plains Langues (Chappaqua) - Good breakfast, but overpriced in pretty much everything and their chicken is not the greatest in my opinion (nor most other food)

wow... i love it. Can you buy in bulk and get a better discount!?!? :X

I totally agree about the whole FD aspect being TOTALLY thrown out. I guess since ER was such a hit series they're trying to push more towards EMS for that reason? (Same for police... all the police related shows) Somewhat sucks, now it just seems like it's turning into a drama by drama episode
