Doesn't that defeat the purpose of self-dispatching?

Everybody don't forget that a show progresses.... if you watch Third Watch on A&E Any weekday afternoon... you'll see VERY VERY BLATENT differences between the show then and now (on nbc)

Northern NY (IE: Ondagaga county) has been doing this for YEEEAAARRS. This system *does* work great, and greatly reduces un-needed emergency situations. To what CHIEFPHIL said, yes, the EMD cards do have a "Code" for the dispatch, but that doesn't mean it has to be used. I don't hear anyone in the Syracuse Area use them... we use a Priority System, and it works great. Priority 1 - Life Threatning (IE: Cardiac Arrest) Priority 2 - Threatning but maybe not ALS (depending the orginization, mine that is only BLS wouldn't dispatch ALS to a P2, but P1 is automatic ALS - these are calls such as serious cuts) Priority 3 - lesser priority, NO LIGHTS/SIRENS - (IE: General Sickness) Priority 4 - Interfacility Transfer - NO LIGHTS/SIRENS This system does work great, it may affect responce times of course, but why do you need an ambulance to zoom around town for someone who has flu symptoms? It helps make everything more efficient/safe. The computerized EMD system is called ProQA in case anyone was wondering.

According to anywhere I see (including TV Guide) channel 40 is supposed to be FX, but on my TV's (both box & not box) it's the home shopping network i'm cablevision ossining north
-
Yeah... it'd be nice if cablevision carried it though
-
Definitely a lot of discrepancies... but overall I thought it was a good start. The whole "bringing in a shrink" is RIGHT out of third watch though I thought. The whole dead thing was a little creepy to start a series... but who knows.
-
Hmm, seems like cablevision doesn't carry FX?
-
Yep I saw an advertisment on a Metro North train yesturday too

RWC, you are preaching to the choir. If a call is "a person has been bleeding, unable to stop the bleeding for 30min" why wouldn't you call ALS? If a call is "Cardiac Arrest" why would you await for a BLS ambulance to get on scene before calling ALS? EMD cards are a great utility and resource, they should be taken with more careful recognition and used for how they are designed, they arn't designed to say "dispatch als" for no reason! There's always room for improvement, especially in emergency services, this is just one example.

Right now, I'm personally not a EMT (dispatching EMS, taking EMT class in the fall though) and I do think that it helps. I've been working with people who are EMT's, and some of the things they do while taking calls and dispatching, is more from an EMT point of view such as knowing how severe something can be, recommending something EMD cards may not, but any EMT would... I personally think it's a great plus to be an EMT/Firefighter dispatching the above given. (maybe should even be required)

tbendick: When the emergency button is hit on the Motorola's, how does FDNY have them setup? I know I have been place where if you hit the button, it sends an emergency signal to the dispatch console with the radio # stating an emergency - - but I'm sure that wouldn't be setup in FDNY because of the pure number of FF's operating... is there anything like this setup though?
-
wow, what an "interesting" music selection for the trailer?!? looks like an interesting show though!

up where I run EMS, no names or anything that can identify a person is said over the radio... not even of crew members. If for some reason you need to give something name related over their air its strictly initals and nothing more. There's no reason for names to be given across the air... for othe point given in WAS967's post. That's why text pagers are good
