  1. Cable customers are going to see this more and more. Fox vs Time-Warner Cable Systems is the first salvo. Cable systems are attempting to keep their costs down for their subscribers, while networks are trying to get "fair market value" for their shows. However, with ad revenues down across the nation for both TV and radio, it's hard to justify paying those fees.

  4. I posted a LODD for FDNY FF Jim Ryan the other day, and in the article I linked it was stated his death was related to his actions on 9/11. Now I'm reading that he has been denied a Department Funeral and his death is not 9/11 related?

NEW YORK - A wake is being held for a New York City firefighter who worked at Ground Zero for six months after 9/11 and was later diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Firefighter James Ryan, of Kings Park, N.Y., died on Christmas. He was 48 and leaves a wife and three children.

Uniformed Firefighters Association president Steven Cassidy is upset Ryan will not receive a line of duty funeral because the city does not consider his death job related.

Ryan's brother, Mike, believes his brother's cancer resulted from exposure to toxins at Ground Zero.

Firefighters who had worked with Ryan in Queens say they have organized an honor guard and bagpipes for Tuesday's funeral.

Description:NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Authorities say nine fires that left two people dead in a western Massachusetts town are "suspicious" and they're treating them as potential crimes.

Federal, state and local fire and police investigators are trying to determine what caused the fires, which local District Attorney Elizabeth D. Scheibel says are suspicious.

Scheibel says the fires broke out in the downtown area of Northampton, Mass., between 2 a.m. and 3:15 a.m. Sunday. She says five fires were in buildings and the rest in cars.

  7. A Sept. 11 hero died of cancer on Christmas Day. Jim Ryan was on the front lines during 9/11, a firefighter who spent many weeks rummaging through the destruction that encompassed Ground Zero, only to succumb to pancreatic cancer, according to a report.

The fire department confirms that his sickness was 9/11-related. And now his family – his three children, wife and all the people who loved him – mourn the death of a hero.

"He was just really really great," his grieving wife, Magda, told the Daily News.

Ryan, 48, was first diagnosed with cancer three years ago. He relapsed last year, reports the News.

A brave fighter until the end, Ryan desperately wanted to travel with his colleagues to Washington in November to campaign for the passage of legislation that would give $11 billion for those who contracted diseases on Sept. 11. That bill hasn't yet passed.

    Time: 0115 PST

Location: 1000 Block North Highland Ave Hollywood

Departments: LAFD, LAPD, Los Angeles Department of Animal Services

Description: On Saturday, December 26, 2009 at 1:08 AM, 8 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 4 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 1 Arson Unit, 1 Urban Search and Rescue Unit, 1 Hazardous Materials Team, 2 EMS Battalion Captains, 4 Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams and 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, under the direction of Battalion Chief Ralph Ramirez, responded to a Structure Fire at 1014 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood.

Firefighters arrived in less than four minutes to find heavy smoke billowing from a 2,500 square-foot, one-story commercial building doing business as LA Dogworks, a self-described "retreat for dogs".

Firefighters rapidly deployed handlines through the dark, smoke filled building, navigating their way to a rear mezzanine where the bulk of flames were located.

The intense fire burned through the roof, but firefighters were able performed strategic vertical ventilation on the arched truss roof to release heat and gasses. These actions, combined with the building's elaborate HVAC system, provided clean air for canines to breathe.

  10. Out here in the West the same thing is happening. People, and this includes elected officials, believe public safety employees are overpaid. The local fishwrap in San Diego, publishes the top 100 salaries for the City of San Diego every year. Firefighters hold at least 3 of the top 10 every year. But no one points out the OT and pay from strike teams to campaign fires or members being on State or Federal Incident management teams, and how that pay is paid back to the city by that respective agency.

Unions need to do a better job of educating their officials on what their members get in their benefits and why. The life expectancy after retirement of both police officers and firefighters needs to be part of that education.

    Quote by Chris192

Sorry, but I respectfully disagree. The police or fire academy is definitely not like going to college; it is more of a trade school. That's why most police departments now require at least some college before you can get in the door (I don't know what the fire academy requires so I can't comment). Personally I think requiring more education is a good thing, it brings in better qualified, more experienced candidates who will be able to adapt to the changing environment of law enforcement more easily. At least that's one theory.

I know its apples and oranges, but out here there are paramedic programs, fire academies and police academies run by the community colleges. And a lot of colleges are now giving credits for work related courses, so my opinion is any extended course is like going to college, especially as tough as the grading can be...

  11. A state trooper was fatally struck by a fellow officer Thursday night as he was laying down a spike strip to stop a suspect's vehicle.

The chase hit a stretch of the Loop 101 in the area of Cave Creek Road and Seventh Avenue when the suspect, Georgia Lynn Baker, 43, veered onto the right shoulder and the police cruiser in pursuit struck Officer Chris Marano, said Department of Public Safety Lt. Steve Harrison.

Authorities eventually arrested Baker, who they say was on methamphetamine at the time of the incident.

Officers on the scene, including a close friend of Marano's, tended to the 3½-year DPS veteran, and one of his close friends gave Marano CPR before he was transported to John C. Lincoln Hospital-North Mountain, where he died at 10:09 p.m. He was 28.

Marano was married and the father of four: a 7-year-old, two 5-year-olds and a 4-month-old.

  13. Also, this is interesting. Remember how NIMS is supposed to be able to expand and be applied to ALL types of operations? Funny how the West Coast is so much better at this than we are over here.

    Alex,

Remember where ICS got it's start...in our wildland fires in the 70's...we train and train on this and do use it for many things. ICS/NIMS are great tools and can be modified to use for almost any large scale event. I've seen it used for expos and open houses.

Also, just as an aside, I have a friend in the Seattle area who said the temp this morning was 9 degrees.

  15. Officials are now telling the media that the suspect is getting help from friends and/or family. According to the Pierce County PIO "Basically, there's no way that he could be doing this by himself; he was shot in the abdomen."

Also, people who know Clemmons told officials that he told them to "watch the news" because he was going to "kill cops."

Every one of them should be pinched for aiding/abetting and/or accessory to murder.

What I heard the spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff's Office say was they were going to his friends/families homes and checking for him. If something was amiss or they had evidence they were "harboring a fugitive", they would be arrested and it would go on like this until Clemmons is on his own...

I hope he has not been able to seek medical help for his wounds and he is dying or has died a horrible death from the wounds...
